Heart stopping, both figuratively and literally. Decadent, heavy, rich, low grade cheese! Covering some charcoal-barbecued slices of pork neck, and mixed with the other most popular unhealthy food on the planet — instant noodles, how could one resist? If that isn’t enough for your arteries, go on and order the honey glazed bbq squid; it’s sweet, it’s sticky, it’ll leave a smile on your now frozen-by-heart-burn face. Sun Kee is one of the four legendary ghetto Hong Kong noodle shops(the other one is actually right downstairs — a less sinful tomato noodle shop). It’s no longer cheap after it gained fame, and portions have shrunk. But seriously, more would become too much of a good thing, unless you can unflinchingly eat an entire block of cheese. Then I would applaud you sir, from my seat, because the blood no longer goes to my head when I stand up quickly.

You may already know that the popular dish here is the cheese sauce pork neck noodles. As a tourist who hasn’t tried something like this before in my life(yes, from where I come from, cheese sauce like this usually happen in a melting pot for fondue or maybe the closet is perhaps pasta carbonara), it’s a novelty. But for HKD44 a bowl, and a pretty small bowl, it’s kinda expensive compared to what you may get for the same portion at other cha chan tengs. The cheese is thick and creamy so it’s not something that I can personally stomach after about half the portion. So the tomato sauce noodles really came in handy cos the acidity helps to reduce a little of the thick sauce. The star to me, is not really the sauce. It’s the freaking pork neck. It’s really tender and soft. While the overall serving is small, the amount of pork is still decent. Enjoyed the protein thoroughly. It’s a little hard to find cod you have to go INTO the building to locate it. But hunters like us, will not give up. So dive into the maze-like streets of Hong Kong and enjoy a bowl of cheese sauce pork neck noodles!

This is a little hole-in-the-wall place that I must say might be pretty hard to find if you’re not a local. But their secret ingredient? CHEESE, CHEESE, ANDMORECHEESE. If you love cheese, give this place a try. I tried a few items, but I can’t recall exactly what I ordered. I remember ordering the ever so popular cheese instant noodles, a fried rice, and some roasted pork neck meat. The pork neck meat was good. I’ve had better fried rice. And the instant noodles… it was good. Maybe because I’m from the US? But I’ve had better cheese, local HKer’s seem to LOVE this place. HK celebrities’ pictures of their visits plastered allll over the wall, so don’t expect fancy décor. It’s more of a ‘order, finish your food, and leave’ kinda restaurant. If you’re around the area, and don’t know what to eat, give it a try! You never know how much longer it’s going to last! This is HK after all.
