College Labor

I’ve used College Labor a couple of times now. First time was for packing up for a small move and then today to take ~30 boxes to Goodwill in advance of another move. Posted what I wanted on their website, got a couple of bids, picked one and arranged it all very quickly and easily.
Justin showed up early, hauled the stuff to Goodwill in two trips. Quick, easy, efficient. Will definitely use them again — and will recommend to others!

I have used college labor a half a dozen times, but have had more disappointment than success. This last time does it for me– no more. The guy never showed up, when I called him he said that he opted out. I emailed the company twice and got zero response. No apologies, offer to reschedule, credit or refund. WEll, I guess who ever is running the business– opted out just like their employees. They have my deposit– theifs! Don’t waste your time or money!

I was looking for someone to haul some heavy items out of my basement. I live in one of those unique San Francisco locations where there is not direct street access to my house, only stairs, so a lot of people complain about the lack of parking. I found College Labor on Craigslist and decided to try them. I sent in my request and got a response back with an estimate within a half hour. The estimate was detailed and included the dump fees. On the day of the pickup Justin texted me to update me on their arrival time. Justin and Conrad arrived on time and hauled these heavy items out of this inconvenient location with no complaints. They were fast, friendly and efficient. This is a great local service.

I’ve used CollegeLabor twice in the past year and both times I have been extremely satisfied. I love being able to get help with small projects around the house for a reasonable price, and knowing I’m supporting actual hard working college students who are just trying to earn a Buck! Pre-​screened college students, I must add.
Today I had my messy Garage completely cleaned for 3 hours from a hard working, polite, on time & friendly student. Very affordable.
Website is easy to use. justin (the owner) is really on top of his game to make CollegeLabor work like a well-​oiled machine.
Definately will use again. I highly recommend.

After getting quoted crazy prices for a very small move by moving companies and being completely unable to book someone using Taskrabbit, I found these guys.
Justin was great about a few of my requests and we were able to work out a time for him and another guy to move a few things from the sunset to the east bay.
The guys were on time and experience went really well. I’d definitely use them again for small hauling jobs.

I didn’t get very far with this company. I entered a job on their website for help with organizing and cleaning out my garage for 3.5 hours. I’m south of SF in East Palo Alto. The bid that came in was $ 67 per hour. I don’t make that much per hour so it’s not affordable. I’m really disappointed. According to their website and the forms you can choose when you post a job their services include household work and pet care, not just moving jobs. I also posted a dog walking job but decided to delete it. I don’t have time to mess around with overpriced quotes.

I found College Labor through Craigslist. I crossed my fingers and hoped it was a good decision. They came through pretty well.
I had just a few large pieces of furniture to move locally, which was too small for your typical moving company. With two days notice, I was able to get an estimate and book two guys to move my things on a Saturday afternoon.
Their website is very easy to use, an estimate for my job came the following morning, and I was able to see the phone number and email address for the guys who I had booked.
They came promptly with a pickup truck, were courteous, and completed the task without any problems. As far as cost, they are about the same as other small movers that you may find on Craigslist. You wouldn’t mistake them for professional movers, but that’s okay.
I’d recommend them if you had any small or odd job that you may need an extra pair of hands for.

I am an event planner and they have never let me down for service jobs at an event. The more detailed in your job request, the more perfect the system works for getting the perfect students for the job.
I recommend this service and my clients have never complained about them. Its best to dictate exactly what they will do, attire, what they need to bring, and what they look like (no tattoos for example) and this company will NEVER let you down.
I want to help these students and the best way is to get them working!

As of today I am extremely disappointed with this organization. Today I was notified that the worker decided not to show up TOMORROW for the job. On top of that, I requested two workers, and evidently they scheduled only one. This is extremely upsetting. I arranged for a babysitter and my whole schedule around this job and they cancel the day before. If they manage to get two workers to show up tomorrow, per the original job description, then I may be willing to write a new review. But as it stands these people are EXTREMELY UNPROFESSIONAL.

I submitted a request yesterday for a pickup of some furniture I needed out by today. Justin, one of the founders, came to our rescue! They were a) on time b) super pleasant c) quick d) most competitively priced! We will definitely be using them again for odd-​jobs and will recommend them to all our friends! Nice work, guys — great site, great service!

This company was great! My two guys were on time, great with my furniture (including a really fragile antique banquet table that I was nervous about!!) and really nice. The price is perfect for what I was looking for– I was moving apartments within SF and had just a few bigger pieces I needed help with, not a full move. They were awesome! My experience with the owner, Joey, was great too– very responsive and professional.
I will definitely be using College Labor again.

My experience with CollegeLabor was rather unusual.
You probably understand their business model. They direct your job to the first student in their team who offers to do it at the quoted price. Rarely, if you spec a job late in the day for that evening, no student will be available for your work. That’s what happened to me. I emailed their support address wondering what was up and got an instant reply. One of the owners, Justin, offered to return my $ 5 deposit or come over and do the work with his partner, Joey, a little later than I had originally requested. I wanted the job done.
They showed up early and quickly schlepped my very heavy ancient TV down to their SUV without any problems. They were eager to answer my questions and hear my suggestions for improvements to their web site.
Aside from their evident commitment to customer satisfaction, these guys offer great prices. I got bids from the traditional haulers that were uniformly 2.5 to 3 times the quote I got from CollegeLabor. And the quote came back within minutes.
Do not be put off by the form you have to fill in when you submit the job. It seems a bit long compared to the other haulers’ simple email wrapper, but remember you’re describing the job to the students who have to decide if they’re willing to do the work at the price quoted by CollegeLabor. It’s worth it in the savings you’ll realize.
Finally, be sensible about what you’re getting and the limitations of the young people who will be doing the work. They can’t refinish your hardwood floors or move your Steinway. Although Justin and Joey train the students to be careful with your stuff and mindful of their own safety, they can’t make them into skilled craftspeople. If you want to dispose of junk, get help on a small or medium move, or have any kind of work that a willing college student can handle, think of CollegeLabor first.

I used college labor a few weeks ago when throwing a dinner party at my house. We hired two students to bartend and serve food to our guests. They showed up on time, dressed professional and even stayed a little bit longer than we had initially asked to help with clean up. I’d highly recommend them.

First off let me start by saying that the whole premise of this business is to hire college kids to work for you… I knew that from the beginning I was not getting a professional moving company. That being said I had no issues with the quality of the service I received.
Two weeks ago I contacted College Labor after having a co-​worker recommend their service. I used the website to book the helpers and I was contacted by Justin from College Labor. The website is pretty cool actually and you can choose from a bunch of different types of work/​list details etc.
My 73 year old Uncle was moving from his home in Daly City to an apartment on Ulloa in San Francisco, my Aunt recently passed away and he didn’t want to live in the house alone. I did not want to do the move myself so I contacted College Labor through their website and got a quick reply in less than 24hrs.
On the morning of the move, Joey from College Labor called and let me know that the students would be there as agreed. They sent 3 students from SFSU to help with the move and they took care of the truck rental which saved me a big headache.
Matt was one of the students who helped with the move, he sort of took charge and told the other guys what to do. He told me that he had worked for College Labor quite a bit and that it was cool because it is hard to have a regular job while going to school full time. The 3 kids loaded the entire truck within 1.5 hrs and drove it up to SF as I followed behind in my truck. It took the students about an hour to unload everything even though the unit was on the 2^nd floor. Even if I had someone to help me it would have been a pain to move everything upstairs. Glad I paid someone else to do the work :) These guys showed up on time, they were respectful and definitely cheaper than a professional moving company.
I am building a fence in my backyard this Spring and I am going to look into hiring some students from College Labor. Better then hiring some guy from Home Depots parking lot or dealing with some guy on Craigslist.

I was helping a friend move recently who hired these guys, she didn’t check with me first even though i’d just done a move myself. She called me mid-​move totally freaked out. These guys were SO UNPROFESSIONAL. They didn’t bring the right vehicle, in fact they’d just rented a uHaul truck to do their work, I don’t know if that is against uHauls policies, but it seems pretty shady to me. Anyway, the it didn’t stop there. They didn’t bring the moving equipment they promised, like tie downs, blankets, etc. They started ripping the tops off my friends boxes to use as padding!
Either way this company works without contracts and insurance, clearly a BIG RED FLAG, and likely illegal in CA. Go with someone who won’t break your furniture, and mistreat your belongings even if it costs a bit more.

Wow, it’s not a real business. Never hire a college student or so-​called mover that does not have a contract, not prepared, no moving blankets, no proper moving truck. Also the workers here are definitely not in college, I did a quick google search of his name and found a Linkedin page for my mover stating he graduated college 5 years ago and works at a local bank. Please do not trust the Ohanessian «family business», really disappointing. They broke some large furniture, the amount of breakage cost more than the service it’s self!
Even more disappointing to see all these higher four to five star reviews by new Unilocal users right after I gave a one star review, makes me think it’s all fake!

Theses guys rock!!! Super quick response to my online quote inquiry. Beyond accommodating and friendly. Best of all they are SUPER COST EFFECTIVE!!! I will be using them again for sure.
