This place gives a mixed bag of a night out. Free entry is always a plus but the crowd can be very varied between old and seedy and young barely of age teens. Drinks specials can make for a cheap night out. Music is hit or miss on tunes but blasting loud when there is a DJ on the main stage. Good to visit from time to time to relive university memories but you will walk away feeling quite a bit older than the crowd by the end of the night.

Vibrant new menu with a good mix of pub classics and modern dishes. I had the steak sub and it was excellent. The burrito that my friend had was huge and he loved it. Will come back again.

Probably the main pub on the cappuccino strip in Freo the Newport is a bit of a mixed bag. A great venue for gigs with the stage out the back and good sound, I have seen a number of sweet performances, from bands to DJs it works. Wednesday night is student night with cheap middies and a solid(younger) crowd although it can get a little sloppy at times. Also a pretty good venue to watch sports with projectors in the main bar area. The problem i have with the Newie is the fact that the bars are so separated there’s no real flow about the place, and it can be hard to maneuver when its busy. A good venue for gigs and Wednesday but apart from that i wouldn’t be setting aside a Saturday night for it.

I’ve been here a few times mainly for gigs, I don’t usually go all the way to Fremantle just for shows, but some of the bands they have playing here just can’t be said no to. I went to see Brow Horn Orchestra play here last year and it was just amazing, a great and intimate venue, especially if you are up the front as the stage is quite low down. There are a few places to sit, which is good if the band has some not so exciting supports. In this case they didn’t I cant remember the other bands name but the second support was Sam Perry, someone I have become a big fan of and to be honest any show he plays is amazing, so this was no different. A really good place for live music!

I have this theory that Newport management owns a mind control device. Or something along those lines. Because I don’t like this place all that much and yet I keep frequenting it. It’s a weird relationship. Sure it does have 5 bars. But outside of the main bar most are pretty empty. And there is no place to sit down(I know you don’t go to clubs to sit, but 5 minutes breaks now and again are essential for me). Alright, there is one lounge and few tables but they are always packed. In addition, clientele can range from really cool people to downright shady characters. I’ve stopped being surprised when police enter in full uniform or there is another fight. Toilets(or at least male toilets) can be downright repulsive. And yet I’ve been in there numerous times and had numerous nights ranging from decent to awesome. It is a bit hit and miss but most of the time it is at least on the target. Oh, and Friday night band is easy on the eyes being mostly female dominated. ;) I think Newport is kinda like beer. It is an acquired taste. Try it, maybe you’ll like it.

The Newport is one of the oldest pubs in the Fremantle area, with a history dating over a century. For a pub of its vintage, it holds up very well. The Newport likes to style itself as party central in Fremantle. It features five bars with various themes and functions, to suit just about every taste. Their beer is okay, with quality brews like James Squire intersped with low-rent beers from Carlton and Tooheys [which, for some bizarre reason, are popular despite being basically beer-coloured water]. The live band area has a generous stage, although bands can sound thin with vocals being lost in the cavernous space of the Newport. There is a large area in front of the stage for those who want to be close to the action, and seating on stools towards the back. The Newport is worth a visit, at least to see the five bars. As a live music venue, some work on the sound would help.

The Newport Hotel, or the Newie, as it is affectionately known by Freo locals whether they frequent the place or not, is a slightly controversial establishment. Everyone goes there, but no one likes to admit that they actually do. Basically, the Newport is the perfect place to go if you’ve already a few drinks under your belt but still want to party. It’s a 100-year-old pub that has the honour of being heritage listed, but I haven’t really found the Newie as enjoyable as other Fremantle drinking holes. True, it houses 5 different bars, including the Band Room where some really great acts have played(Howling Bells, Dead Letter Circus and British India to name a few), and they are in a prime location along the busy café strip. But the Newie’s lack of character hasn’t seen me return too often. It’s wooden and steely interior is a little too sterile for my liking, and it’s not the greatest of places to sit down for a chat with a group of mates. It is, however, perfect if you’re up for some sloppy dancing to DJ music when it gets to that point in the night when you’re keen to bust a move after the weakest links have caught a cab home. There’s nothing inherently wrong about the Newport, but I suppose I’m not their target market. I think it’s an ideal place if you’ve finished work and are after a beer or three with some chums in an unpretentious atmosphere. If you’re in Fremantle, there are plenty of places who can provide you with a uniquely Freo experience, complete with a warm and friendly atmosphere amongst quirky décor and a selection of craft beer, cider or wine. Unfortunately, the Newport isn’t really one of them.

The newport has 5 bars. Not 1 or 2 but 5 covering a variety of different atmospheres. There is a place for daytime pints or for watching sports(The Front Bar), the Jagermeister Bar does exactly what is ensued, the Band Room is the pride of place here as they get some great names coming to play. The courtyard serves as a beer garden with a retractable roof and the 5th bar is a function area. The Newport doesn’t have the same trend of craft beers and Mediterranean foods as the rest of Fremantle bars. It is more of a modern spot that focusses on getting some a-list musicians to play such as Donavon Frankenriter coming in Febraury(’11) for a FREE show. I don’t find it very appealing during the day but if you’re looking for some dancing in Freo then this may be your best bet.
