History

Established in 1920.

Frager’s Hardware was founded by the Frager family in 1920 and has been in continuous operation ever since. In 1975, John Weintraub and Edwin Copenhaver bought the business, and over the years have expanded it significantly, almost taking up the whole block. After opening a successful rental store next door, a first-class Benjamin Moore Paint store popped up on the corner. It wasn’t long after that they decided to transform their own parking lot into a Garden Center! John and Ed both served in Vietnam and they decided to open a business together during class at George Washington University Graduate School. The two owners and their staff have carried the torch these many years, continuing to provide the customer service that started with Mr. Frager himself. It has truly become a Capitol Hill institution.
