History
Established in 2008.
5th Street Ace Hardware is owned by Washingtonians Gina Schaefer and Marc Friedman. It’s part of their group of six stores in Washington and Baltimore that are all part of the Ace Hardware co-operative.
Unlike franchise models, Ace’s mission when it began 80 years ago was to provide support and good product pricing to a growing number of independent hardware retailers. That mission couldn’t be more important than it is today with the growth of big box retailers forcing so many small independent businesses to close. Today there are more than 4,600 Ace Hardware stores in the United States and around the world.
Meet the Manager
Brad J S.
Manager
Store manager Brad Johanson-Smith started his career with 5th Street Ace in September 2013. After a lifetime spent in Atlanta, GA shopping at his local Ace, Brad decided to pack his bags and move to DC to become store manager because he values the Ace model of friendly, helpful, and excellent customer service. Brad’s favorite thing about working at 5th Street Ace is the knowledge he gains from assisting customers with their projects. His main goals as manager is to build a strong team of associates and emphasize the message of helpfulness every day. In his free time, Brad enjoys rock climbing, hiking, reading, and hanging out with his wife and 3 dogs.
