Zion Rock & Mountain Guides

This has to be the most fun my boyfriend and I have ever had on any sort of trip. We booked an all day canyoneering trip and had high hopes of going to water canyon after seeing so many pictures. We appreciated Zion Rock and Mountain Guides’ ability to accommodate us after a scheduling mix up. After one rough week we were able to get 24 hours out of Salt Lake and take part in this awesome adventure. We drove out about an hour towards the Arizona border in the company Jeep. From here is where we started our hike up to water canyon. Andy was AWESOME! He was super knowledgeable about the area which make the hike up to the first repel pretty interesting. The nature around us was breathtaking as well as the perceived risk of doing the repelling. Andy made us feel super safe and was very good at explaining what to do. By the end of this I felt 100x more confident and comfortable doing it than I did in the beginning. His joking style made me feel at ease about what I was doing even when I felt a little scared. Even though it rained half the day and the sun kept hiding from us, the trip itself was a major success and just what the doctor ordered. This is something we definitely want to do again! (Andy suggested the summer) Thank you so much to ZRMG and especially Andy for making this a trip we will never forget.

My boyfriend and I had the best time on our tours! We originally signed up for two full days hoping that we would enjoy the first day enough and want to do it a second day. Holy cow, were we glad we signed up for two! Our guides were incredible… Mel, Griffin, and Andy showed us the best time! We loved having such a small group with Mel and Griffin. On the day with them, it was just us and another father/​daughter duo. We went to Birch Canyon. It was a great day with amazing views. Then, on our second day it was just us and Andy. It was such an incredible, peaceful day in the canyon! We went to Water Canyon. This canyon was even cooler than Birch… and that is saying a lot! Water Canyon provided us with many cool obstacles and great views as well. In this canyon, we were slipping through narrow walls and balancing on small ledges trying not to get too wet! But, then we definitely got wet when one of our rappels dropped us directly into a pool of water that we had to swim out of! Definitely only do Water Canyon if you aren’t afraid of a pretty tough hike up to the top.
The guides were also very friendly and personable. They told us all about Zion and themselves. They were able to give us great recommendations for things to do in Zion! We watched an amazing sunset and ate delicious meals thanks to their suggestions! Andy also took phenomenal pictures of us on our adventure! We are going to make a great album to treasure forever, and our friends’ jaws drop when they see the pictures he took of us. We also really appreciated how easy it was to rent gear from this company. Not only did they outfit us for our canyoneering adventures… but you also helped get us set up with gear for hiking the Narrows on our own. They made it so easy and stress-​free!

We booked the half day canyoneering trip with Zion Rock and Mountain Guides. We got there late so it ran into our total time but our guide Nathan was super patient, funny, entertaining and very knowledgeable. Since there was only 3 of us, he drove us to the site with the company jeep and we canyoneered in Lamb’s Knoll right outside of Zion. Tour companies cannot actually take groups into Zion National park but we can see why. Even on a slow Friday morning, there was plenty of other tours at the same site. We knew we were in good hands. It was our first time canyoneerng for all 3 of us and we can’t wait to go again!

We had two days of adventures with Zion Rock and Mountain Guides — one day canyoneering and one day mountain biking. Both activities were highlights of our trip. The guides, Jack & Spencer, were outstanding! Their concern with safety and focus on making each activity a quality experience for everyone in our group was impressive. We had a variety skill levels and many of us were novices at both activities. Our guides made sure everyone had a fantastic time. I highly recommend this outfit!

Our shuttle to the Narrows broke down on the way and the driver had the audacity to leave 6 hikers behind with the stranded van. Fortunately an hour later we hitched a ride from a competitor company (Red Rock I believe). Otherwise we would have been forced to walk 10 miles to get to Chamberlain’s ranch.

Disclosure this is purely from my experience over the phone, we didn’t actually work with them. I was in a group of two people looking to get a shuttle from the subway in the afternoon, I understand there’s traffic and with road closures on kolob road it’s frustrating however we were told point blank there were no drivers around that afternoon. After a weird suspicion we called back and asked for a larger group for which all of a sudden there was a shuttle. Just rude guys, at least just say no one wants to drive up there. We found another smaller run company who was completely friendly and wonderful and ended up booking them for three other runs. The other reviews are great for these guys I wish we had that experience.

I wish I could give no stars to this company. I made several phone calls and attempted to cancel my reservation after never receiving a confirmation email and my card was still charged for a shuttle I never took. Not only did the company not call me back after several voicemails and phone calls, they had the audacity to charge my card for 2 shuttle rides and never addressed my calls or voicemails concerning my reservation or trying to cancel 2 weeks beforehand.

For my 30^th birthday I finally wanted to check something off my list that I have been wanting to do for ages – canyoneering. There could hardly be a better place for a canyoneering outing than Zion, so I started looking around for a guide company in the Springdale area to take my group out for a full day of canyoneering. I could not be happier that Zion Rock and Mountain Guides was the company to take us out. They responded to my inquiries quickly and informatively (one place I contacted never even responded), and were just a delight to work with. Our guide, Andy, was fantastic. We never felt unsafe under his guidance and he was extremely knowledgeable about the whole Zion area and was able to answer even our most random of questions. He did an excellent job of personalizing our trip to the experience, needs, and expectations of our whole group. When our trip started to run to the point when we «should» have started making our way out of the canyon, he was very accommodating in allowing us to decide if we wanted to do the last two repels and never pressured us to head back so that he could be done with us. I really appreciated how helpful he was about more than just our paid canyoneering trip and gave us information about our Narrows hike the following day and he did not pressure us to rent gear. I would recommend this company strongly, and I hope to get another chance to get out in the canyons with them!

We booked a trip of canyoneering for our family of four. We have a 12 year old son and a 6 year old daughter. Melissa did an amazing job of guiding our family and making sure we were safe and having fun. She also did a great job of gauging the route and rappelling to our ability. Well worth the money.

I went to Zion Rock Guides to use for a shuttle to Chamberlain’s ranch as well as to rent gear. My group arrived to get outfitted for dry pants, water shoes, and socks. I quickly noticed that the person who helped us was just handing out whatever size pants they had to offer, they definitely weren’t anyone’s particular size. Then we went to pick out shoes, it became very obvious that the shoes they have are in need of replacement. The shoes they have for rent are at the end of their lifespan. (this wasn’t my first time doing the Narrows so I had my expectations of a quality shoe) Don’t come here looking for the classic tried and true 5.10 Canyoneer, they literally only have a few pairs in select sizes. Most of their shoes are beat up Adidas Hydro Pro shoes.
Most of my group decided to rent the gear from here, but I chose to leave after what I had seen. I went elsewhere to rent my gear and met up with my group as the shuttle was there to pick us up for the ride to Chamberlain’s ranch. The driver took us shy of the trailhead as there was some small mud patch ahead. Turns out it ended up adding around 2 miles to our trek just to make it to the trailhead. As I walked on the road to the trailhead I saw 2 other vans from other outfitter/​shuttle companies drive right past me to drop their groups off at the trailhead. I don’t know if our driver didn’t like driving in mud or if the other company’s vans are better equipped for any 4 wheel drive situations, either way, not cool if you’re not offering a discounted rate, or at least not warning my group before we got in the shuttle.
Within a couple hours of us starting the hike on the Narrows trail, a member of my groups’ shoe heel started peeling right off. Thanks for having worn out gear being rented out and forcing people to have a miserable hiking experience.
When I went to return the gear it was a little late as members in my group went slower than expected due an injury. One of the guys working there was out washing down other rental gear and he tells me «Yeah, you’re going to have to bring that back tomorrow» I said «excuse me?» and I dropped it off anyway. Why would I want to hang onto this crappy gear another day because you’re too lazy to wash it off? The employee went to grab the file with the rental agreement, as he gave it back to me I went to apologize and explain to him my groups’ troubles in the narrows to give explanation as to why we were late. He said «Yeah, apology not really accepted» I took my rental agreement back and could not believe that a company would employ someone with this kind of attitude.
When I got back home from my trip I noticed that this company double charged my credit card for the shuttle ride. I tried calling back multiple times and with several different voicemails and didn’t receive any call back to remedy the problem.
This was my 8^th year coming back to Zion to do some backcountry hikes and it was my first and last time using Zion Rock Guides for anything backpacking related.

My wife and I booked a ½ day canyoneering adventure. 2 guides (Melissa and Griffen) took great care of us and led us on a fantastic trip through Dixie National Forest. We rappelled down steep inclines and did things we could never have thought we would do. It was a wonderful and challenging trip. Great guides and a wonderful experience highly recommend it.

This is probably the coolest experience I had at Zion! Sonny took us to Dixie National Forest and we had a great time canyoneering in Yankee canyon. He was very attentive to the differences in ability in our group and made sure that everything we did was safe. We also were able to see a flash flood as it happened which was absolutely amazing. I was very impressed by the whole thing!

Great experience! We had a family of 5. Three kids ages 16 to 24. Full day Canyoneering was well worth it. In any trip like this the most important piece is the guide. Forget about anything else the guide will make or break your trip. We had a great guide and experience with Sonny! He showed us some great spots taught us some basic Canyoneering moves and how to repel! The trip to the Water Canyons was amazing a good hike up the canyon but makes all the repels down so worth it. Thanks Sonny amazing days.

My husband, 10 year old son & I had read about these guys on TripAdvisor so chanced that they could take us for a half day canyoning trip the next day.
Luckily they managed to get hold of our guide Sonny as he was awesome.
Not only was Sonny obviously knowledgable on all things relating to canyoning but he also had great knowledge of the area and gave us lots of interesting facts.
Safety was paramount for Sonny and as a result we had a fantastic trip through the Yankee Doodle.
An added bonus was he was great with kids and had a great sense of humour

I have to start with had I known what I was signing up for when I called and inquired innocently about family canyoneering, and was told that the group would only be my family and the guide and that people as young as 4 and as old as 80 do this, I never would have signed us up for this. My husband even said the same thing, he never would have allowed me to sign our little family up for this given the grueling physical demands and the scariness of the tasks! But I have to say, I am glad I was ignorant. I have never had so much fun in my life. This will definitely be one of the most memorable experiences of my life and my kids’ too.
I also have to preface this review with how crazily not commercial this business is. Nor do they really market themselves at all. Here they are located feet outside of Zion National Park and yet they are not what you expect. At the end of our adventure, we so wanted to buy a tee shirt to remember our experience. And they didn’t even have damn tee shirts for sale! All they had were caps. And I was so expecting to be forced to buy their recommended footwear and other paraphenalia, but I did not get any hard sell at all.
Best of all, we had the best guide ever – Isaac! The nicest guy ever. So laid-​back. He walked us calmly through everything we had to do. Was so super patient with us. And really knew what he was doing. He was unbelievable. He really made our trip. He was very encouraging and was the best coach ever. Little did we know he is an American Ninja Warrior! As we were eating our lunch, he asked if we watch television. And that is when he told us. Isaac Caldeiro! Now we watch avidly and are cheering him on. Great guy and a great experience. Totally worth it.

Zion Rock & Mountain Guides provided our group of six with an awesome and memorable experience in canyoneering. Our group range in experience from NO Experience (and timid) to some of us experience with rappelling. George and Seth did a great job in accommodated all of us.
Our guides were very informative about the history of the landscape and did a great job in advising us how to pass through various «obstacles» of the canyons.
Zion Rock & Mountain Guides is not the biggest company in town, but because of that I think we got better service!
We would definitely us this company again.

I’m giving this place 4 stars only because of the 6 star experience we had with Jake as our canyoneering guide for 2 consecutive days, otherwise this would be a one or two star review. He was excellent. This guy knows what he’s doing, is patient with beginners, is very safety-​minded and confidence-​inspiring. I would highly recommend him for your canyoneering trip.
The customer service in the shop was pretty pathetic, like 2 star level. The guy there obviously has little interest in giving advice.
Overall, I would choose elsewhere for gear rental and advice, but for canyoneering guides this is probably the place.

There’s a reason that they deserve a full 5 stars. Their Rock Climbing guide trip was a thrill, but more importantly they gave me the confidence to do it. I’m frightened of heights, I admit it. So the idea that they could make me comfortable with rock climbing is awesome.
I’m thinking that most other places would have seen my «problem» with heights and given up on me.

Absolutely AWESOME! This was THE highlight of the whole trip, the full day canyoneering trip.
We went out to the canyon with Jake, a stellar, friendly, radical climber/​canyoneer, and had an absolute blast with total confidence in our guide. Water Canyon is just beautiful, a perfect pick for our introduction to the sport, but challenging and stimulating in the same right.
We couldn’t have asked for more from the trip. The whole deal is not cheap, I mean, you’re hiring a private guide to take you to a canyon out of town and show you how to rappel back into it, but, the best $ 400 we’ve ever spent. Tip your guide well!!! They are awesome! Thanks a ton Jake!
