We offer environmentally responsible prefinished and unfinished hardwood flooring to our clients by making these sustainable products a focus of our business and not merely an alternative choice.

We strive to always use natural oil/​wax finishes or eco-​friendly water-​base finishes and offer a Dust Control system of sanding.

We endeavor to follow green business practices in the communities where we live and work while gaining certification as a green business.

Designer floors has been involved with bay area construction for years. We keep busy with home remodeling projects and are happy to help with mid to large size jobs. Small scopes of work; patchwork, and minor repairs are not our specialties. Our crew is skilled and trained; capable of installing, sanding, and finishing a professional hardwood floor.

We offer customers expertise in the historical and traditional aspects of the hardwood flooring trade as well as information on the latest industry innovations and trends.

Our extensive hands-​on experience with red and white oak flooring includes work with everything from custom wood orders and intricate custom inlays to the most recent, but proven, products on the market.

Over ninety percent of our work comes from referrals and previous client contacts. This is because our policy has always been, and will always be, to ensure customer satisfaction; our customers like working with us and like the results we produce. Business Owner

Kevin Dixson, principal, has over 27 years of experience in the wood flooring business.

In 1985, with a degree in Arts, Kevin started working with a partner, who already had several years of experience in wood flooring.

In the next few years, Kevin mastered the intricacies of the profession and later created his own company as a sole proprietor. Mainly working on small jobs, with the occasional help of a few workers, he started building floors of wider and larger proportions, mastering the art of flooring, with elaborate inlays interweaving with sophisticated types of woods.

Over the years, Kevin has proven his mastery in the profession, and his business has increased exponentially. The quality of his work, his professionalism, and an excellent satisfaction rate from his customers are the foundation of his success. Over ninety percent of his business comes from referrals and previous client contacts.

Our floors look brand new and absolutely perfect thanks to Designer Floors and Kevin’s team.
I especially appreciated how helpful Kevin was with all my special requests. I asked him to call each day after his team finished so I could set my security alarm and he did.
It wasn’t an easy project to re-​do our floors while we were living there, but Kevin made it as easy as possible and the results were worth it.

I interviewed several floor installers and they all had very different opinions about what to do with my douglas fir floors. The floors still had the original lead paint around the edges and I had painted all the floors with deck paint. The paint was peeling and even the lead paint was peeling so I had to do something.
I was torn between refinishing the douglas fir or installing a new floor on top of it. Refinishing them would require dealing with the lead and the result would be imperfect. I like the funky look but since the house is a Victorian I wanted to keep the integrity. The doug fir floors are actually a sub floor meant to have area rugs over them. There was no sound protection between the floor and the garage as cars moved in and out.
I felt that Kevin had the most intelligent analysis and plan of all the people I interviewed. As I went through the process, this was confirmed several times as he weighed in on problems and potential problems along the way. He was always measured, knowledgable, experienced and intelligent. He is a perfectionist and a stickler so don’t expect a laid back casual approach. He works closely with his office manager Gabe who is the perfect compliment to Kevin! Together they run a seamless operation.
I was a little surprised when the crew arrived and Kevin was not there. But I was quickly reassured that these workers had been thoroughly trained and were very experienced. They were polite, neat, protective of the surroundings, extremely hard-​working and also perfectionists. They really knew what they were doing.
My house became transformed in a matter of days and the compliments rolled in by anybody who came by to see the progress of the work ie roommates, neighbors, friends etc. It’s been a couple of months now and I still marvel at how enjoyable it is to have hardwood floors. It has also helped create a sound muffler over the garage.
A new floor is a huge investment and I feel that I have greatly added to the beauty and functionality of my home.

Kevin Dixon and Designer floors are exceptional.
I recently moved from NYC, and bought a bungalow in N Oakland. Lots to do!
Including taking up the existing pergo to reveal Douglas Fir flooring that luckily was in pretty good condition. Kevin and his team came in and sanded, stained, polyed, and what was finally revealed was magnificent. Like new floors! Kevin was very helpful in exactly matching the stain I had shown him from photos, and the floors are warm and have beautiful highlights. The team was pleasant, on time, worked quickly, and my neighbors said they couldn’t hear a sound.
I must give Gabe, the office manager, a shout out, who was very patient in several changes to starting dates, accommodating delays with other contractors.
All in all, it was a great experience, and I would wholeheartedly recommend Designer Floors.

My husband and I used Designer Floors twice in the past few years and are very happy with their job and their professionalism. The first job consisted of patching a portion of the floor after we removed a wall and the job is seamless, as it was always been like that. They also refinished the floors throughout the house with great results.
We called them back a couple of years after, during the remodeling of our basement. We needed them to patch the hardwood floor where a door was removed and to cover the existing staircase. Again, great job, beautifully done and with great customer service. I do recommend this company.

We are thrilled with how our floors looked after Kevin and his crew redid them. We had old douglas fir and pine floors that had gotten pretty nasty over the years and when we came home after the refinishing we were amazed at the change. All the rooms had the exact same finish and the new color was perfect! We coudn’t be happier. Plus Kevin came in and completed the job in the time he estimated. Kevin is very knowledgeable and we would highly recommend his services to everyone.

Kevin is a great guy… really helpful, low key, and honest. He told us what he recommended, cheaper options, and which areas of our flooring did not need to be refinished.
With regards to his team, work started and completed on time and the work is EXCEPTIONAL. His team ripped out all of our carpet and replaced it with hardwood then refinished the areas that already had hardwood. I can’t tell the difference between the new and the old (the old looks brand new :-)
We were out of town the entire time and I felt completely comfortable having him in charge. I most definitely recommend Designer Floors and will use them again when refinishing time rolls around again.

We have used Designer Floors twice in the past four years. Both times, they installed solid oak floors with mitered picture frame borders and a dark walnut accent strip. In one case, the floor was nailed to the subfloor. In the other, it was glued to a noise abating cork sheet.
We got competing bids from other contractors both times. We did not get any COMPARABLE bids at a lower price. For example, when we wanted the floor installed on cork, some of the other contractors would not do the picture frame border.
Kevin is very professional and credible. He provides accurate start and stop dates with his estimates. His crew is efficient and considerate. Some examples:
(1) To save us money, they undercut our baseboards to install the most recent floor, rather than removing and replacing them, because they are stained and would be expensive to refinish or repair. They did so without causing any visible damage.
(2) They leave the jobsite very clean at the end of each day, and are very careful to prevent dust contamination of the rest of the house during finishing.
(3) When there has been damage (e.g. to a door casing), they have repaired it quickly and without prompting.
Regarding the other review that complains of increased prices, it is my understanding that materials costs have gone up substantially in the past few years.
I would definitely recommend them.
