Mighty Bird

My first encounter with this place up north was not that great, but this place won me over. I’m a fan!
I’d say we felt like tacos so we came here, but when don’t we feel like tacos? It just happened to be close and convenient so we rolled up there and it was a pretty calm evening. The one thing — this place isn’t that quick. We waited for a while for our food. Not an unreasonable amount of time, but definitely an «I’m getting hungry and tasting the salsas with my finger, is my food here yet?» amount of time.
The good news was it was worth the wait. I remembered my beef (hehe) last time was with the chicken and the salsas not being good — which are the staples of a chicken taco place. This time, they had 4 salsa to choose from and they ranged from good to great. The chicken was delish. Between Joel W. and I, we tried most of the tacos on the menu and liked them all.
I’ll be back because I kind of want to work my way down the menu and order one of everything.

I’m really disappointed. When I first started coming here I got addicted! I loved the simple combinations that highlighted the chicken really well! But they changed the menu and I’m not impressed. Was it broken? It seems like it’s overly done, like it’s trying too hard to be fancy like torchys. I miss the old Fresca the most. It was chicken, white shredded cheese, pico, and avocado. Simple and delicious. Now it’s got tomato, onion, cilantro sauce, chicken and queso fresco. The flavors don’t combine as well and the sauce is gross. I definitely didn’t feel like I was eating healthy. The onion and tomato are chopped really big which makes it hard to get a good combo of flavors in one bite. I also tried a couple of the new sides. Brussels sprouts and the potatoes, the sprouts were rubbery and the potatoes where super dry and I went during peak hours. Both lacked in flavor. Another miss for me is the soda. Even when I liked the menu I would try the soda and be disappointed. They taste flat, all of them.
I will say the staff at both locations are always cool and I signed up for the points system and get free stuff. They even made me the old Fresca because I asked but they don’t even have pico anymore so I was left with huge chunks of onion and tomato. Not the same. I don’t crave it the way I used to. I’ll be back for the early bird and coffee though. Please don’t change that!

The tacos are all pretty good. Never tried a burrito but have been wanting too.
The best on the menu in terms of tacos would be the road trip taco.
The queso is top notch. The only thing I would like to see added to the queso would be a small scoop of guacamole. Just imo.
All in all. Great place to have for lunch or breakfast. Only issue are the hours the locations are open and seating options.
Also there is no soap dispenser in the men’s bathroom. That’s always a lost star at any location.

This was a pleasant little find after we went to the Drafthouse next door for Star Wars.
Eli was one of the most friendly, effective sales professions I’ve encountered in a fast casual restaurant. Everything we tried was amazing. My wife had tacos and the chicken chorizo is as great as the previous reviewers have said. I went with the nachos. Their queso if GREAT! It has a perfect level of spice and a great consistency. That queso trophy isn’t just for show!

Since I was in the area, I decided to give this place a try. I ordered the early bird to go. Cute restaurant and very friendly staff. The taco was just okay. Not bad but not mind blowing either. I tasted a piece of plain chicken that wasn’t drenched in their sauce and the chicken had a really good rotisserie flavor. I didn’t really care for the orange sauce that they had drenched my taco with. It tastes like a spicy mayo-​ie thousand island sauce. I should have asked for it on the side so that I could have tasted it first and had the option to use it if I wanted. Oh well. I’m headed next door to get some coffee and pastries. :)

Three syllables… A MA ZING! I had the Mighty Bird and the Jefe Flaco street tacos (egg whites, cheese) for breakfast and they were hella good. My buddy had the Hangover burrito… HUGE and the dipping sauce that goes with it brings out the chicken flavor. My kid had the Chicken Nacho and I’ve never seen so much chicken packed in it with plenty of guac and cheese.
This place is for the health conscious cuz it’s all chicken goodness. I’d highly recommend it even though it’s a bit of a drive from downtown. Everyone, even the owners greeted us when we walked in and asked us if we needed anything at the end of our meal.
It was hard to decide what to get, but fresh made chicken on the spot made the wait worth it.
I’m from Fort Worth and driving thru to San Antonio made this stopover EPIC.

The place is a little gross. Cool friendly staff and okay ambiance but the food was a bit rough. I should have seen the signs, three white dudes working the kitchen. No offense but you must have a Mexican in staff if you want to sell tacos.
All in all, i don’t think I’m going back there. Sorry.

As any Austinite knows, «Best Breakfast Taco» is a title one does not give lightly, but the Early Bird at Mighty Bird earns it hands down. Delicious, moist rotisserie chicken with egg and cheese, all covered in their spicy mighty sauce and served in an amazing thick flour tortilla that sometimes comes out more like naan bread. I’m sure there’s other good stuff on the menu but I rarely stray from the Early Bird, because why would I?
The staff are also super nice, and they don’t take tips (I’ve tried!) so I assume/​hope that means they’re paid decently.
The only negative point is that they stop serving breakfast tacos at 11, except on Sundays when they’re until 3pm. It’s totally the opposite side of town to me so I only usually make it on Sundays. I go every Sunday that I’m in town, though, because they’re THAT GOOD.
Update: they do now take tips. Which is great, they deserve them.

I love this restaurant for the soft, tender and juicy rotisserie chicken. This place gives me good vibes. Love their selection of sauces, hand pressed corn tortillas and intriguing cane sugar-​based drinks (the lemon spritz rocks). My ideal meal here is a half bird meal for a weekend brunch. The rice and beans are top notch as well. Very cute ambiance with outdoor seating available. Highly recommended!

Great tacos and affordable!!! Definitely an undiscovered gem in Austin. Like Taco Cabana but a million times better!

I loved their street tacos. They have two vegetarian choices among the street tacos — The Border Town and The Dilemma. The mighty sauce that they serve alongside the tacos is very tasty. Simply delicious!

I was originally going to go to the café next door but the bright colored banner and rooster outside caught my eye so I decided to look up Mighty Birds menu and reviews on Unilocal and wanted to give it a try. Their advertising tactics def worked on me!
If you’re in a rush then get their grab-​and-​go tacos that are already pre-​made in their heating shelves. I had the chicken chorizo and egg taco and lemme tell you, it was delicious!
I also ordered the Jefe Fresco which is egg white, avocado, cheese, and poco de gallo. When I got this and took my first bite I was a bit confused. The tortilla and avocado was cold but the eggs were warm… but I’m glad they had a healthy option available!
They have a sauce station with 4 different kinds and they were all yummy! (Except the jalapeño ranch, not my cup of tea)
I would def come back here if I lived in Austin! The rest of the menu looked pretty interesting too, wish I could try each item.

The Mighty Bird has the best breakfast tacos that I have ever eaten.
I highly recommend the Early Bird.
The staff is friendly, the place is spotlessly clean, atmosphere is wonderful and the sauces are unique and incredible.
I’m so glad that the Mighty Bird is walking distance from my office.

We got a meal deal with a whole chicken, rice, beans, and tortillas. Let me review them one by one:
Chicken: Pretty darned tasty, a nice-​sized bird, perfect for ripping apart and making delicious tacos.
Tortillas: Wonderful. Soft and fluffy, great for making delicious tacos. We got flour on the recommendation of the very nice gentleman at the counter.
Beans: OMG delicious. I’m not a huge bean fan, and generally I find refried beans are refried beans. But these were absolutely terrific. They had a great texture (not just bean mush), and wonderful flavor. I never gush about beans, never. But these were fantastic. They use black beans, which I’m sure makes a difference, but they also flavor it really well.
Rice: Good. The rice was good.
Salsas: No idea. Everyone raves about the salsas and sauces, but since our meal was to go, we didn’t have any. I thought they might just put some in the to-​go back, but they didn’t. Next time I’ll ask about it, because I’d sure like to try them!
Upshot: Delicious rotisserie chicken and sides, a great pick-​up-​and-​go dinner. We will doubtless be back MANY times.

Noticed the colorful entrance and stopped in to check it out but, as a vegan, Mighty Birds is not a good option. Luckily the beans are not made with lard or any animal fat. I got two tacos for $ 3 each: corn tortilla, refried black beans, pico de gallo, avocado, and rice. They were ok.
Rice was bland and overcooked and the beans were bland. Luckily the pico de gallo added some flavor. Good amount of avocado and the tortilla seems like it’s probably made in house.
Friendly staff member helped answer my questions about ingredients, but I won’t be going back due to lack of options and flavorless food. Might be a different story for an omnivore, though.

The staff was amazingly polite and helpful when we went in unknowingly so close to their closing time.
The food was delicious. I enjoyed all of their fresh salsas and sauces.

Their soda machine had Maine Root ginger ale. Our was slightly spicy. I loved it!

I stepped in here a few minutes before 11am and i was sure i missed out on breakfast tacos. But they still had some. I assumed they would be the ones that were made early and have dried out under the heat lamps.
I was wrong. What i had was very fresh, moist, and DELISIOUS!
The corn tortillas were really good. I did not know they made theirs fresh. I sat and watched a guy hand pat out a ball and put it in a tortilla press, then lay it out on the stove. Wow, that’s fresh lol.
The tortillas had a good corn flavor and did not break apart.
The bacon, eggs, & sausage insides were yummy.
I will be back here again. Today was my 1^st time.
Oh and the staff was friendly & fun too.

We bought a combo meal for 4 people-​bird, 2 sides and 6 flour tortillas.
Are you kidding me?!! That is what I thought when I saw the sides. I was able to feed my 3 year old and 7 year old ONLY! WOW, I never thought rice and beans as high priced food items.
But the worst part is when I noticed a small rubber band in the rice container. I was standing there, serving my family dinner and trying to figure out how to divide the rice and beans between 4 people when I saw the rubber band. It was the same color as the rice and it blended so good. SMH. It makes you wonder what goes on in restaurant kitckens. Ugh, reinforces the idea of taking the time to prepare your food is not bad after all.
I won’t go back to that place. I will stick with the HEB Rotisserie chicken (it’s about $ 7).

I will not go so far as to say that this place is better than Torchy’s. If Torchy’s had fresh pressed corn tortillas too then you would have an even better version of Torchy’s.
This place does in a pinch though. I like that they have fresh pressed tortillas. They also have a few vegetarian options. These options are not as good as the options available at Torchy’s…but I don’t want to keep comparing the two as I feel they’re not entirely… the same.
It’s a pretty colorful place and it adds another nice option for this area of town that isn’t as pricey as say… Cover 3, Madam Mam’s, or HopDoddy. Let’s be honest, we can’t eat there all the time and seriously, I don’t want to have to wait as long to get my food. You walk in, you look at the menu (or order online), ask for what you want, pay, and seat yourself. Food was quick and promptly delivered within about 10 minutes. I’ve been for dinner and breakfast.
Breaking it down, the green hatch chili queso is tasty. Put a scoop of guac in that and I’d say you have a contender for some awesome queso in town. It’s a little gummy though… so I would like it to be a little thinner. Also, the chips here… KNOCK most contender chips out of the running. They’re quite crisp, warm when served, and have a good balance of salt and integrity. They also have a nice mouth-​crumble factor and don’t hurt my gums whilst chewing.
The dinner options… are ok for veg-​heads. They have 2 offerings I think.
Breakfast TACOS FOR THE WIN! They have a few options, a papas and a Migas. The migas option is reminiscent of the Pete’s breakfast taco that you can get from Maudie’s. Heavy handed with the queso, with chunks of jalapeño. Sadly, the corn chip factor was softened greatly by the interplay of queso. But it came piping hot and wrapped in a fresh hot corn tortilla of love.
The Papas taco… OMG, mashed seasoned potato may just be the best thing ever to go on a breakfast taco! It comes with the potato, some delicious white cheese, eggs, and that damn tortilla that’s so tasty. They have a salsa section up by the drinks and serve local fresh brewed coffee. I hate their creamer station though and would prefer carafes of half and half or milk. Whatever.
The food is good. I like this place and this location in particular has THE BEST MUSIC. If that’s your thing… we heard a mix of 1950’s classics, to downbeat electronics, Indie, and Top 40. My taste in music may be crap but at least it wasn’t deathmetal.

Friendly service, they recommended the wings and I’m glad they did. The wings were rotisserie rather than fried and were delish. I enjoyed the corn tortillas that were thicker than most.
They were not stingy with the Avacados on the tacos. The chip, queso and quac were def at the top of my list and I eat at lots of mex places. The bottled big red soda calmed the fire burning in my mouth from the pico. It was clean, colorful and casual.
It really was the perfect lunch for our Labor Day off.
