I’ve been here twice now and will probably find a new place to go after this visit. When making the appointment I had to spell my name 5 times before they found my name in the system. They also scheduled me for the wrong time which annoyed me even more because it was a long drive for me. The doctor is good, but I will be looking for a better place next time.

I have been a patient at Anderson Lane Optical for almost 4 years. I have always had to wait at least 30 minutes to be seen at every appointment I have had with them, but felt I could deal with the long wait once a year. Once I was finally back, Dr. Schaper did take his time and was very thorough.
I am not one to take the time to write a review unless the service I had was exceptionally great or exceptionally bad. Yesterday I called 1800contacts to order contacts (I am on my last pair) and was informed that it had been a year and am due for an eye exam. Scheduling an eye exam was the last thing on my mind because I recently had a baby (3 months ago. also have a 4 year old). 2 days ago our AC went out at our house which caused extensive damage, so I loaded up the kids and we came out to my moms house which is about an hour and a half outside of Austin. The customer service rep then suggested I call my doctors office and schedule an appointment and ask them if, because of the situation, they would be willing to approve an order for one box of contacts (said that most doctors have no problem doing this even without a situation like mine). So I called Anderson Lane Optical and explained my situation to the lady who answered the phone. For some reason I was suddenly placed on hold mid-​sentence. When she returned to the phone she was very rude and just had a bad attitude for some reason. She told me that no, they will not approve one box of contacts that I could come by their office and pick up a trial pair. (They have never had my contact prescription in stock before, in almost 4 years but not the point.) I told her AGAIN that I was out of town at the moment and would probably be out of town for a while as there was damage done to my home when the AC broke and it all had to be repaired before I could bring my children back into the home. She said «welp, sorry thats all we can do». So in other words, not her problem. At least that was her attitude.
I was very disappointed they would do something like this to a loyal patient and because of this I have made the choice to find a new optometrist in Austin and you should too!

Nice people! A dog broke the sunglass «clip ons» to my glasses. A different dog had destroyed my $ 600 Stars in Your Eyes prescription sunglasses a few weeks earlier. That wouldn’t be a problem except that the sun has finally come out in Austin and I had no sun protection for my eyes. I thought that I could just waltz in to Stars in Your Eyes and my problems would be solved. Not so — the only optician was still at lunch at 1:15 and the dollars that I have previously spent there meant nothing to the receptionist — left alone to deal with the public. So the next day I went to Anderson Lane Optical with limited expectations. It took the gracious lady a while to fix my $ 90 clip ons, but fix them she did — and for free! My wallet has a long memory.

So, I came in Couple days ago for contact fitting, my overall appointment was alright. .
BEWARE OF THEIR «ASTIGMATISM FEE» !!! Even though you have insurance which «I did.». I was still hit that fee of $ 80.00
Dr. Scapher: he was awesome! took his time, polite and knew what he was doing.
Staffing– there’s allot of negative reviews about the staff. I did not have that experience. Just wish they’re a little educated on insurance & educating member’s regarding their policy/​pricing

These guys were great! They got me in as a walk-​in, were very thorough, and answered all my questions. I was out in less than 45 minutes. Dr. Scraper was very cordial. I’ll be back!

Great service and open on Saturdays. They take most insurance and the office is very clean. They would earn 5 stars if the selection of glasses were larger, but since I’m not a hipster I don’t need over the top choices.

I have to say I’ve been coming here for about 5 years now and am rather surprised that so many reviewers have had such horrible experiences with this place. I will say that I can understand the comments about the front desk staff, though I’ve never encountered anyone to actually be hostile. They’re different every time I come here, but as that’s only once a year I don’t know what their turnover actually is. Some are nicer than others, and there’s the occasional employee who seems to just hate being there.
That all said, I’ve been seeing Dr. Schaper the whole time and I think he’s great. He caught my glaucoma and sent me to another great ophthalmologist. He’s always listened to any issues I have with my contacts and knows how to fix them. I have never bought glasses from here and can’t speak to that, but I’ve never had problems with getting the staff to file with my insurance or anything like that.

Terrible service. My husband and I dropped by to schedule because no one ever answered the phone when we called. Okay, they answered once only to say «Hello, please hold». We hung up after 7 minutes of waiting. The front desk staff was so rude and even a bit hostile when trying to book our appointments and get pricing. Our appts went okay– they were very informative but they’re selection on eyewear is lack luster. I just tried to order my contacts on the phone and had the same encounter as before– no answer, no way to leave a message and was put on hold once. This place is mediocre at best for my overall review. There are plenty of places in town that do what they do but offer better customer service. My advice– steer clear.

Do NOT use this place. It would be better to have undiagnosed glaucoma than to be burdened with the nastiness of the staff here for even five holy minutes of your life.

They must have had a staff meeting. Staff was much friendlier and helpful at this year’s check-​up. Plus, the price of my contacts actually went DOWN. Yeah!

The front counter service was unfriendly to the point nearly of being flagrantly passive aggressive. Sullen faces, resentment for customers palpable. When I brought in a broken pair of frames I purchased from Anderson Lane Optical to simply be glued, they refused to help, saying they don’t have glue and the best they can offer is to sell me a new pair.

Doctor was great, most doctors say I have some of the worst vision they’ve ever seen and I end up having to pay ~$ 400 for a box of contacts. This doctor managed to get some Acuvue contacts that work great and now I only pay $ 30 a box. I’ll never go anywhere else.

I had a routine eye exam here back in January. Got my prescription but never got new glasses. Fast forward to the Texas summer and me squinting like it’s going out of style, and I had a lightbulb moment: prescription sunglasses! I decided to order a pair from
as I’ve previously had a good buying experience with them. I needed my prescription so that I could place my order. Enter Anderson Lane Optical.
I call them up and ask them for my prescription. The receptionist says sure, and asks me to confirm my mailing address. I tell her I’ve moved and she takes down the new mailing address and says she’ll drop it in the mail. All good so far.
Then I say «can you read the prescription to me?». That way, I can place my order now and not lose a week waiting for it in the mail. She says «nuh uh. We don’t do THAT.» I asked if it was against their policy, to which she replied «no, it’s not a policy, we just don’t do that.» My interest is now piqued — this woman doesn’t know what the word «policy» means. Why, pray tell, do you not read a prescription on the phone, ALO? After more prodding, the receptionist says she cannot read the prescription over the phone because what if I’m not who I say I am? Well, in that case, why did you allow me to change the address on my account to begin with? You certainly didn’t authenticate me. I explained that my previous optician was happy to share the information — what kind of trouble can I really cause with a sequence of numbers?
There are very few times in life that I’m rendered speechless but this was certainly one of them. When you can’t appeal to someone with logic or a well-​reasoned argument, there’s really not much else you can do. Things got heated and the receptionist started yelling at me. I asked for the store manager’s name to which she said «Jeannette» and when I inquired about Jeannette’s last name, she said «I’m not going to tell you». What kind of scam operation are you running, Anderson Lane Optical? What on earth did you think I was going to do with Jeannette’s last name?
After this craptacular service experience, I logged on to trusty Unilocal to read other people’s reviews and was not surprised at the shoddy ratings this place got, specifically due to the support staff. If you’re on the hunt for a new optician, keep looking.

My name is Ken. I went here about 1 year ago to find some new glasses. I had a scratch on them and since I bought the warranty they assessed them while I waited and ordered me a new set of lenses before I left. I spent a little more than I wanted to but I usually tend to like the best of the best so I paid with my c.c. and before I new it I could see. After reading the post below… I can just say that when I went there. They attended everyone in order and didn’t leave their side until they were handled. That’s my 2 cents… I would recommend this place to family anytime,. KM

I have to say, my experience here was great! The Dr. was excellent, and Jeanette was fabulous. All the ladies I talked to were very friendly and helpful, so I’m not sure where all these nasty reviews are coming from. Either way, I know I will be back, and in the meantime I will enjoy rocking my awesome new Prada frames!

To echo the sentiments of other Unilocalers… the doctor is great. The rest of the staff leaves much to be desired. Never friendly, certainly not help helpful and sometimes down right nasty and hateful. Dr. Schaper needs to clean house and get a decent support staff. Poor guy!

The front staff has the worst customer service. The doctors should really reconsider their staffing, it makes for an unpleasant experience upon arrival. Being a new patient, the front desk staff put a bad taste in my mouth right upon arrival. I would not recommend this eye clinic, there are probably many more great ones to choose from. Please rethink them as your eye care provider.

I took my daughter to Anderson Lane Optical on a Monday. I had called for an appointment on Friday and received a call back on Saturday. I gave them our insurance information on the phone and was told I would be called back after they confirmed our coverage. I was called back, told I had no co-​pay, and was thrilled to get an appointment the following Monday for my daughter. We were told her appointment was at 10:00 am. We arrived at 9:55, spent 10 minutes filling out paperwork and saw the doctor at 10:30. That was a pretty long wait for an optometrist, but…
My daughter was with the doctor for less than 10 minutes, but then they left us standing at the counter for about 10 minutes without talking to us. I finally decided there was no point to shopping for glasses there after waiting so long and asked why they were keeping us waiting. I was told they were unable to find our insurance confirmation, but would tell me what I owed. I told the woman at the desk that their representative had told me two days earlier that I would have no copay, but she said she hadn’t been there on Saturday and didn’t know anything about it.
After a while, she said she wanted me to pay $ 49 or so. I repeated that their representative told me I would not owe anything for an exam. She said the two women who were working on Saturday weren’t in the office. I said that I would have thought they would attach a note to the appointment, but perhaps she could call them. We waited. And waited. I made a comment that the office did not seem very competent, and she was quite indignant telling me they were very competent, but reiterated that she had not been in the office when my appointment was made.
Finally, she reached one of the women, who was not the woman with whom I’d spoken, but who, fortunately, remembered my calling. She then told me that I didn’t owe anything and gave me my daughter’s prescription. We spent 1 hour and 5 minutes in the office, and my daughter spent less than 10 minutes of that with the doctor.
So, if you have lots and lots of time and enjoy standing around at a desk being ignored, this is the place for you. If this is competent office management, give me one managed by monkeys in the future.

I went here for an eye exam and to see about a new set of glasses. I’d just moved into the neighborhood and was hoping to keep Anderson Lane Optical as my eye-​care provider, but that won’t be the case. The eye exam I received was routine. Neither the doctor nor I had much to say. The women operating the front desk and the sale of eyewear were, however, very unprofessional. The selection of frames at A.L.O. isn’t bad, but many frames had brand logos or designs on the sides which I’d rather not have, so I asked to see a catalog. This disgusted the woman working with me, who insisted that I wouldn’t find anything they didn’t have in the store. When I did, she admitted they’re stock had been pretty «picked over.» Then, as I was paying and about to leave, another woman behind the desk had the gaul to ask me, upon discovering from my insurance card that I’m a local teacher, why so many teachers think it’s appropriate to have sexual relationships with their students. Thankfully, a woman and her young daughter who’d been in the waiting room before had already left, or that would have made the situation more uncomfortable. I asked why she thought it was so many, and if this was something she normally brought up with her customers who were educators. She explained that since I’m a man on the younger side (30) that she wanted to «grill me» as I’d know best. I told her as simply as I could that I thought such incidents have always occurred, but that we’re finding out more often because of technology and media coverage, and gossip, and that hopefully she wouldn’t let a few horrible people affect her opinion of all teachers.
I’m not sure what made this woman think this was an appropriate topic to bring up at her workplace with a paying customer, but I’ve already begun to steer others in my neighborhood who referred me to A.L.O. away, and will do the same with my co-​workers once the school year starts again.

I’m middle-​of-​the-​road on this place.
In past years I’ve gone to a different place and had a bit of trouble with my prescription. So I’m impressed that I’ve had no complaints since I got lenses prescribed by Anderson Lane Optical.
On the other hand, I tried twice to get information about lenses, but they wouldn’t tell me much more than lens name and price. Try Gene Rogers Optical for good lens recommendations and excellent help choosing frames.
So, 5 stars for the docs, 1 star for the frames and lenses department.
