Gerald W McDougal, DDS

I have been a patient of Dr. Mcdougals for over 10 years and could not be more pleased with my experience with him and his office staff. I have bonding over my front tooth and Dr. McDougal is incredibly meticulous and precise at matching the bond color with my other teeth. He is funny, smart, very talented in his work and an overall excellent dentist. PLUS the prices are extremely reasonable compared to many of the other dentists in the Austin area! Also, Laura the office manager is very kind and can always work with my schedule, and all of the hygienists are very gentle and thorough. I highly recommend going to see Dr. McDougal.

As I left Dr. McDougal’s office after my check up, I was thinking of how fortunate I am at this advanced age to have all my teeth still working for me. That adds a lot to life’s pleasure. I am glad I have discovered Unilocal so in situations like this, when praise is do, I can offer it in a public way. I see that many others describe very positive things about Dr. McDougal. Add me to the list. I was sorry to see that a couple of people found his humor bothersome, when that is so refreshing to me. I like being around people like him that radiate a positive individual, and in this case, one who likes what he is doing and find pleasure in being focused totally on how he can use his many years of experience to help people. My experience is that when there was an issue that needed more than casual observation, Dr. McDougal explains it patiently so I understand what requires attention, why, and what can be done about it. I live with the thought that I owe him a lot more than a big «thank you» for the dental care I have received for over 30 years.

My procedure took place between July and August 2014. 2-​part root canal and a crown placement two weeks later. Setting up an appointment here was a breeze! The coupons available on their website are also a plus! The staff were okay. Dr. McDougal was kind, humorous and very helpful. I checked him out after a bad experience with another dentist. He saved me thousands of dollars and helped me be much more confident with having dental work done! I got a root canal and a crown at his office. The procedure wasn’t as terrifying as I thought it would be, and Dr. McDougal promised to make sure the procedure went as smooth as possible. My only damage with my experience is my displeasure with my crown. I’d called before because I felt my crown was too big. It was uncomfortable for a while, but not painful. I’m sure I was tap-​dancing on the staff members’ nerves, but I was so unfamiliar with such dental work that I had a ton of questions. I called saying that I was displeased with the look and feel of my crown. I felt that the temporary crown he made in-​office even felt better in my bite. I am of the belief that the permanent crown I was given was scaled too large. And while Dr. McDougal made it fit and it chews and smiles just fine, I’m not particularly happy with it. He insisted it is a perfectly good crown, it would be more trouble than it’s worth to get a new one, and that he’s good at what he does. Who am I to argue with a man who’s been in private practice for over 40 years?! Not wanting to make any bigger of a deal than I already had, I let it go. I eventually had to visit another dentist. The crown thing was a small factor, but an even greater factor was the distance from my job. Dr. McDougal is pretty far in proximity for me to commute on bus from my job. When I called to have my records forwarded to the other dentist, I found that only the records from the previous dentist were forwarded, not the records from Dr. McDougal’s office. This frustrated me, but I’d rather not even bother with the staff. Laura’s had a bit of an off-​putting attitude with me ever since I inquired too deeply about the crown. While I’m not a fan of how the whole crown situation went down, I cannot deny that Dr. McDougal is a seemingly great guy, a self-​assured dentist and cares for his patients. I could just do without the vexation. Cheers!

I could not be more satisfied with a dentist as I am with with Dr. McDougal and his staff.
He was my childhood dentist. I left Austin in 1993 and to my surprise he was still practicing, but at a different office on Shoal Creek.
He has a solution to all dental scenarios and has an excellent demeanor and uses humor to make you feel comfortable.
I highly recommend anyone to visit Dr. Mac and his staff for any and all of your dental work.

Terrified of going to the dentist in general and a bit of a hypochondriac, I was dreading this appointment. I shouldn’t have. Great practice and I couldn’t have been more pleased by how great the staff and Dr. M was at cleaning and checking my teeth.
Excellent service aside, I am most impressed with the ethical way they handled their practice. I disclosed upfront I had a dental concern about one particular spot in my mouth. Having worked in the health industry, I knew that by disclosing my concern, I was leaving myself incredibly vulnerable to a shady dentist coming and ‘finding something to fix’ so they could charge me for an expensive procedure. Furthermore, I had found a promotion for them so I was even more weary they were going to try to find a way to stick me with a bigger bill to recoup their loss leader. The hygenist and Dr. M diligently checked my one area of preoccupation, assured me it was fine, and sent me on my way.
If you are looking for someone who is going to take care of you and make ethical dental decisions based on what is right for you –check this practice out.

I only give 3 stars because of the amazing hygienist.
Dr. McDougal was rude. When I told him I work in Taylor, TX he said «Oh, those look like Taylor stains on your teeth.» I live in Austin.
I guess he assumes all people from Taylor or rural towns must be tobacco chewing farmers who don’t brush, floss, or shower.

I am so blessed to have Dr. McDougal and his staff in Austin. This is the best it can get. Very professional, kind and do the best for the patient not for the pocket.

Wow, Erin is the best hygenist, EVER! I am always amazed how gentle she is, but my teeth turn out perfect. I love getting my teeth cleaned here.
Dr. McDougal has been my dentist forever, I know, since I was a 6 years old, still remember him squirting me with the water gun, and I would laugh so hard. He used to give treasures from a treasure chest, but maybe I am too old now.

Pulled one of my wisdom teeth last night. Didn’t feel any pain. Working his magic again!

The star is for the effort from his staff. They were nice. This was my second visit to his office and both times I’ve been greatly disappointed. At the second visit, he insulted me with a few remarks about me being a «pretty girl» but most people wouldn’t understand why I don’t «fix my teeth» and if I choose to enter Miss America, I would want to get my teeth fixed. NO previous dentist say that my teeth needed any cosmetic help or recommended braces (I would post a pic if I could for proof). He recommended an irreversible procedure that I’ve since asked other dentists (2) about and neither recommends the procedure to ANYONE. My husband and I have both gone to him in the past and we will not return. I felt like he was after our $$ or trying to do well with another Dr. by giving a referral. He also tapped on my teeth with the water sprayer thing during the exam which was shocking, annoying and just plain obnoxious.

Dr McDougal is a great, efficient Dr. However, the staff seems less than happy to be there, and are border line rude. I came in once to get a cavity filled. I got called back, and set up and the hygienist said the Dr. was sick, and not able to come back from lunch (totally fine, people get sick) I said «that’s a bummer, it took forever to get this appointment», She replied «SORRY ma’am I need my hours, trust me, I am mad.» with an awful, condescending attitude. If the doc wasn’t so cool, I probably wouldn’t go back. The staff could use a ‘tude change for sure.

Can’t say anything about the dentist himself because they cancelled my appointment. I set the appointment a month in advance, then they called the day before and cancelled the appointment. Lovely.
Apparently their policy is the opposite of every other dentist ever, where you call in 24 hours in advance if you can’t make it. These guys call you and if they don’t get an answer (like me, I was driving back from out of state with a dead cell phone) they cancel it for their own purposes. Frustrating when you work hard to schedule around kids, trips, work, etc.
Anyway, I will find a different dentist, one with accommodating policies.

I have been Dr. McDougal’s patient since I was 6 years old, and many years have passed, and I still see him. I recommend him, first, he has very gentle hands and manner, no pain, no nervousness. His staff of professionals are the best, too. He only hires the best… after all, I have been going there for years. I hear horror stories from other people and their experiences, I never have endured an unpleasant time with him, EVER.
If you need a new dentist for yourself or your children, go see Dr. McDougal. He is the best dentist in Austin! You will be glad you did.

I’ve been going to Dr. McDougal for about 25 years now, and I recommend him to all my friends with no reservations whatsoever. His office is modern, he’s always updating his equipment and his methods, his demeanor is always relaxed and friendly, and every bit of work he’s ever done for me has been perfect. Erin, his hygienist, has been there for years and does a fantastic job, as does the rest of the staff.
I’m blessed with reasonably good teeth and at this stage in my life I haven’t needed anything more than cleanings, fillings, and a few crowns. There are never any insurance hassles, and he doesn’t ever do work or try to hard sell me services I don’t need or want.
I moved from Austin 15 years ago, and currently have to drive an hour from east of Bastrop to get to his office, but I’d have to live in Houston before I’d consider switching.

I’ve been seeing «My Dentist» (that’s what his sign says) for 2 years now.
My teeth are fairly rotten from a childhood of eating way too many sweets. I had Kool-​Aid in my veins and dessert every day. So now I pay the Piper.
And by Piper, I mean Dr. McDougal.
I switched from my last dentist because he didn’t believe in administering gas. Me? I believe in gas.
Nitrous Oxide. Vaporized Gold. Texas Tingle…
Dr. McD is a true believer as well. He’s not afraid to give me the legal limit of gas that I need to endure anything more than a routine check-​up /​cleaning. I should mention that due to numerous fillings, root canals and crowns throughout my life, I get anxious about my visits to any dentist. I gots to have something to loosen me up and stop the sweating.
Humana insurance doesn’t cover the nitrous, so I have to pay $ 24 out-​of-​pocket, but I think it’s worth it.

The Good Doctor is a mellow kind of guy. A grandpa figure of sorts, with a calming demeanor. His hygienist is good at her job and friendly as well. The receptionists are nice and they remind me I have an appointment the day before.
I have been in pain here on numerous occasions, but that is just the nature of my dental needs. Root canals and crowns can only be so pleasant. Dr. McDougal does the best he can to make my visit as easy as possible. I would give them 5-​stars, but they haven’t figured a way to make the novocaine shots painless, and I have to pay extra for gold crowns, so I have to dock them one.
