We were actually quite pleased with the service and the food at Taku. In fact compared to New York this is a very good deal. The sashimi are excellent and their rolls are fun and tasty. We were seated at a booth and enjoyed our dining experience at the restaurant. I haven’t been to any other sushi places in HK yet, but would definitely recommend this to a tourist.

I can imagine that the only reason they can still survive is that there aren’t any other Sushi restaurant, and tourists and expats are okay with this standard of food /service. I always half-jokingly say, I come here only if I don’t have a booking in any other restaurants in Soho over weekends, because in Taku you are almost guaranteed to get a seat here. Wait, I take it back. There are always empty seats, but you will be lucky if you have any server to lead you to those seats. When the restaurant is half full and you don’t have a capacity to manage everyone, it’s a sign. And I have to say, in my very own impression, that they are almost biased towards expats. Expats would have priorities over locals when placing the orders or getting served. I hope someone here can prove that I am wrong. Food were okay. Nothing crazy, but nothing particularly good either. But with that price tag, I’d expect more. It’s a meal you will forget how it tastes as soon as you walk out of the door. Now factor in the price. Ummm. There’s the Soho-premium, obviously. It’s subtly around 10% more expensive than that price range, then add 10% service charge on it. Suddenly ordering delivery at Itacho Sushi becomes an even better alternative.

Priced like a hotel, served like a canteen. I’m not saying the staff are not friendly, but they should raise a bar if they want to position as a high end Japanese restaurant at Soho. We arrived for dinner at 6pm when the whole restaurant was empty, asking if we can take a bigger table but they refused saying they are ALL booked and settle the two of us in a pretty small table. The restaurant was still 95% empty when we left at 7:30. We have ordered a sushi platter($ 270), a tuna + urchin rice bow($ 230), a sashimi rice bow($ 198) and a fried chicken($ 70), spent so much and the table not big enough for the food we’ve ordered — that’s a FAIL! Although the food is nice, made of authentic ingredient and yummy, the environment made it feels like a cheap cheap all-you-can-eat Japenese café in Mongkok!
