Its just chips and gravy, nothing to get excited about. The portions are pretty generous, but then they should be as its quite expensive for what is just a portion of fries. Cooked fresh, the fries taste really good. The gravy tasted a little sweet to me, not completely to my palette. Tables are provided on the pavement to sit and eat, though this is on a really busy thoroughfare. I couldn’t see anywhere to dispose of our used cones so I took them inside to ask the assistant to throw them away. She snatched them off me and tossed them in the bin without a word. Customer service skills a little but lacking here.

How can you go wrong with two of my favorites, fries, chips in AUS, and gravy. Just as good as those you get in Canada. Fries are cooked when ordered so they are popping hot and loaded with he perfect amount of hot gravy, soooo good!

The place is pretty cool, though don’t let the name confuse you — they sell huge cones full of chips, and I have to say that their chips are actually pretty good. In fact I can’t help stopping by here every so often to grab one of their large cones of chips, especially ones with the poutine(though their version of poutine is basically gray and grated cheese). Mind you they don’t just sell chips — you can get a burger here as well, though I haven’t had the pleasure of trying one because the only thing that captures my attention are the chips, especially the chips with gravy. Sure, I wouldn’t say that they make the best chips in Melbourne, but they do make a pretty good batch. However, don’t expect fast food because they do cook their chips to order, but then again that is what makes this place so great.

The fries and brown gravy was not really my thing but was a pretty decent cheeseburger.

Coming to Melbourne, this first stop I always make in Melbourne is a trip to Lord of the Fries. However, the last time I went, after bike riding from Docklands to the city, Lord of the Fries was closed. Wanting my oily, carb fix for the night, I ventured to the nearest option: Coneheads. This store is 2 stores north of LOTF and the wall is covered in photos of hot blonde girls licking cones? Is this an adult shop or a PG rated place for the munchies? Judging by the suggestive photos, I decided to order a serving of fries with Mexican topping. My order also came in a cone, but when I consumed it, I was not enjoying the item as much as the misleading advertisement on the wall. The fries weren’t the fat ones like the Dutch would do, they’re just medium thickness take away store fries. The topping was decent, warm tomato salsa, fresh guacamole, sour cream and cheese. However, the warm/cold thing just didn’t really work well with me, and when I got to the bottom, I was just left with mediocre chips. A wide box would have been preferred. So go here if LOTF is closed and there’s not much else open. However, be warned you won’t be having a food orgasm like the misleading photos on the wall will suggest.

Cone Heads beats out Lord of the What? Tiny cooking station. Dual fryers. Bar seating. Special holes to place your cones in. Nice gravy. Better if the poutine used cheese curds in lieu of shredded cheese, but tasty nonetheless.

Hmmm, what does one really say about a chips place? It’s really good for odd times of the day snacks, when not much else is an option or many other food places are closed. It’s also one of those places in which one shovels back food in an attempted antithesis to late night drunken revelling. But there’s more to the store than this. It’s use of quality ingredients and cooking measures to ensure the product is delivered clean and crisp. No, it isn’t the healthiest of food, but certain other burger chains are likely to have a greater detrimental impact on the body. Chips and gravy for me. Again with the chips and gravy! But it’s good; country style, and you get a wooden implement thing to eat it with, so it’s relatively mess free. Well that’s all I’ve ever eaten here, so I can’t speculate any further as to the quality or range of what else they offer. But you know sometimes you just can’t resist guilty temptation and a naughty snack. There’s always a time a place for such indulgence. It’s pricey, relatively speaking but what these days isn’t?

On a Saturday night around 2am, this place would be an absolute treat because its so straightforward. Chips. With gravy on them. (Plus a few other things, if you feel the need to deviate from the core offering). The chips and gravy are both delicious, plus you get a nice little fork so you don’t mess yourself up. Obviously its not Vue De Monde, but if you are after a quick snack, I’d go here before I went to one of the fast food chains.

This establishment brings me back to my high school days of chips and gravy for breakfast(terrible I know, however those chips with gravy tasted so great) and this chips and gravy phenomenon has come alive once again. Cone Heads has recently opened in Melbourne’s Elizabeth Street near Flinders Street train station. The cone like cups make you feel like you are eating a gigantic ice cream; although this time round you are served the hottest and crunchiest chips I have ever tasted from a non-cha in store in Melbourne, and with gravy too. I feel like a kid again; yet this time round I am not walking up here for breakfast. I have done the right thing; and have given the chips and gravy a go for lunch. Thumbs up. The owner of this new business is taking a bit of a risk being so close to Lord of The Fries(a chain store in Melbourne that serves chips in a likeminded manner) although I would love to see this establishment succeed. The store is clean and inviting. The ambience brings forth the notion of success and credibility to any chip and gravy lover. And expect great service too.

I can’t even begin to recall the number of nights my friends and I have stumbled out of one of the various clubs on Fitzroy Street and headed straight to the golden arches in search for the perfect 3am feed. The next day, you look down at the brown paper bag on your floor and feel that sudden pang of guilt for being so careless with your diet, right? Well, after being introduced to Cone Heads by housemate, no longer do I feel AS bad. Yes, the restaurant may be famous for its cone shaped box filled with delicious thick cut fries that are probably just as bad for you as Maccy Dee’s french fries, but Cone Head’s burgers — with their sour dough buns, gourmet grilled beef patty, fresh, natural ingredients and delicious mayo — are sooo much better than any rubber tasting«burger» you’d pick up at a regular fast food joint. Admittedly, the prices are considerably dearer than any other fast food outlet but I believe you must pay for quality. The service is hasty and pleasant, and the generous menu of burgers and fries options make this place the perfect venue for a late night snack. Tables are even provided out on the street with convenient little holes for you to stand your cone of fries in! However, be prepared to wait for your order with the crowds.

OKAY — what’s the big deal about this place? I firmly maintain that it’s just not that good! If I wanted some delicious chips, I would probably grab some Lord of the Fries not too far away over Cone Heads. Ambiance: The menu is on the side and the shop is pretty small. There’s barely any seating and at night it gets massively cold because there is no door so the wind just rushes in. So… you probably wouldn’t want to stay and have your chips in the store. Food: The food could be a lot better. I ordered Fish and Chips, which was a little under 10 dollars and came with tartar sauce. There were 3 pieces of Fish in the cone with Chips and a slice of lemon. Everything was a bit overcooked. It was all edible but overcooked because both the Fish and Chips were rough and chalky and there was FAR too much salt. The Chips were COVERED in it, especially at the bottom… Not worth it in my opinion. — I wouldn’t come here again. The food wasn’t completely awful, but when it comes to the plenty of other options just next door, Cone Heads is something that I would skip over 10 times out of 10.
