I’m a regular here. Prior to my first class I thought«Yoga, how hard can it be?» Well, I was completely wrong… it is definitely a challenge and it had me hooked from the start. I suffered sciatica as a result of a ruptured disc in my spine and Bikram Yoga has helped relieve the pain, increased general flexibility and fitness. I was also relieved I wasn’t the only guy in there(it is now about half women/half men). They have a introductory deal($ 20 for ten days) so if you’re looking to test yourself, give it a crack… just make sure you do more than one class and hydrate!

I was dragged to my first class by my mum and I didn’t want to speak to her after. I struggled so much, I ended up sitting down for most of the class. I signed up for a $ 20 for 10 consecutive days so I told myself I had to try it again, and I did. And then I did again, and now its been about a year and a half and still I am there once a week, at least! After you get used to the sweltering 40 degree heat, and just clear your mind and think about the good the class is doing, you will begin to enjoy it. Its perfect really, you are doing some much good, and you feel good when you finish. It is really great for not only your physical health but your mind and general well being. The depth in which you have to push yourself and the focus on each ‘move’, strengthens the mind and helps you meditate. It isn’t cheap mind you, but at the Joondalup one, they have a ‘angels’ program in place in which you can work a couple of hours at the studio and get the classes for free. So if you are struggling but love it too much to not go, well this is a really nice thing that they do. Really it makes it available to anyone, as long as you can give a few hours.

Disclaimer: This is not for the weak or faint-hearted. Bikram Yoga is one of the latest crazes to sweep the entire globe. Bikram Yoga or Hot Yoga takes place in a room heated to 40 degrees celsius and is said to stimulate every aspect of your body. I was coaxed by a cousin to try out an introductory session and was swept away. I sweated, I stretched, I almost died. But it was amazing. And the team at Joondalup is one of the most supportive and encouraging teams. They make every lesson an intense meditation session that helps you shed the kilos. Even after a few classes you can feel your body changing. Clearer skin, tightening waistline, etc. The only downside is that the times are very restrictive for someone working full time hours and studying but you can bet your bottom dollar the next chance I get I’ll be at a class. It’s a bit pricey, but good health has no price tag.
