I was pleasantly surprised on my recent visit to hogs breath café. It seemed like a meat fest and I recall that being true a number of years ago. Now however there are over 3 options for vegetarians on the entrée menu and 2+ on the mains :-) I went the crumbed mushroom and avocado salad. The mushrooms were crumbed and deliciously deep fried(vego but not healthy per se) and the veggies fresh and not overly drenched in dressing. I got a side of hog tail fries which were perfection all curly and perfectly fried. Yum. I think curly fries excite young and old alike! My dining companions all enjoyed their steaks by the look of their massive plates which were all but pristine as if licked clean. The service here was friendly, all table service and quick on what was a busy day! This is not the kind of place I’d go if I was choosing but I was pleasantly surprised that at a meat house such as this I wasn’t relegated to plain pasta or an entrée only! They’ve definitely breathed some non hoggy breath into this place.

On a Sunday evening I arrived with a group and was seated right away, the restaurant was pretty empty. The staff were polite and gave us a decent amount of time to look at the menu before approaching us. During the meal the staff attended to us once to make sure everything was okay and to ask if we needed more drinks. When we were done our plates were taken and our bill dealt with without any delays or other fuss. The only reason I can’t rate 5⁄5 is due to some minor issues with the meals,(1) at least a couple of our dishes were not hot enough to remain warm while we ate them, and(2) my beef with garlic sauce and mushrooms was either completely lacking the sause or just had so little I didn’t notice it. I’d give them another go next time I’m in the area as these mistakes are possibly circumstantial.

You need to make bookings here if you don’t want to wait too long before getting a table, especially on a Saturday night. The décor is amazing, all Americana license plates and posters on the walls, neon and 50s themed signs surround you while you eat. The steak is amazing here, yes maybe a little pricey but still amazing. Slow cooked and cooked to perfection. Curly fries are a highlight for me, I love them. The veg is sometimes a little undercooked but the salad is amazing. Portion sizes are good for the price too. Staff are friendly and check in to ask how the meals are and if we want and more drink but they do not hang around too much. I love coming back here. There is something everyone will like

Visited the Hog’s Breath Café to try their lunch specials which has been recently advertised. I ordered the Char Grilled Chicken & Ranch burger. The Burger came out with a side of fries, which was hot and tasty. However the burger itself was terrible, the chicken was beyond dry. I’ve had dinner here before and didn’t have a problem so I’m thinking i’ll stick to the steak menu at dinner before coming back here for lunch.

Great ambience, friendly service and good food. I especially like that kids are ½ price on Tuesdays. A very family friendly place.

The thing I love most about this place, besides the slow cooked steaks and magnificent curly fries, is the customer service. I couldn’t believe how nice the waiting staff were. As soon as we entered we were seated and introduced to our waiter for the evening, who then went on to make sure we were having a good time and had everything we needed throughout the night. Hope for Rachel to be your waitress, because she is the sweetest steak serving lady you’ll ever encounter. Glenelg Hogs Breath is one of the best, located upstairs there’s lots of cosy seating and you can even dine on the balcony and suck up that sweet ocean air. I suggest booking ahead here because it can fill up fast.

An expensive place to dine but the food here is worth it. The BEST steaks and the coolest curly hog tail fries which are always a hit with the kids. For entrée’s they do a fantastic share plate with potato skins. If you have not tried their potato skins I strongly suggest you get a serve because they are the best I have had from anywhere. They also do some really nice salad options for lunch and they are much cheaper than their main meals and still so good. I think we paid less than $ 15 each for a great salad with chicken in it and it was still very filling. If you go for an evening meal make sure you get a slushi cocktail from the machines at the bar. You can get massive share glasses or get a smaller one just for yourself. Heaps of choices and they are really amazing alcoholic slushies. The outside balcony dining area is great for lunches or evening meals when it is warmer weather. Then you can work the calories off with a nice stroll down the Jetty and along the Foreshore. Have been to this store plenty of times and only ever had one issue with vegetables not being cooked properly, in fact they were stone cold! Only the side of vegies, the rest of the meal and the baked potato were perfect. We mentioned it to the manager at the time of paying and he gave us a discount on the meals and a free HUGE alcoholic slushi. So even the one time there was an issue they dealt with it to our satisfaction and I would still go back again and again. This place is in a prime position and is always really really busy so best to make a booking, especially if you have a few people going or want to sit outside specifically. Without a booking you will just have to wait around the huge barrels by the bar and drink until you can be seated.

If you(like me) are happy to make a pig of yourself when you go out to eat, then run, don’t walk, to the Hogs Breath Café. Their steaks are GOOD! They’re also a bit on the expensive side at $ 30 plus a pop, but what do you expect for an 18 hour slow-cooked slab of prime rib chargrilled to prefection. In other words, they’re worth it! You can also have the novelty of Hog Tail Fries on the side, which are exactly what they sound like — little piggy tail coils of fried potato. If you’re just not a carnivore there are many other options, in fact the menu is huge. The(supposedly) lighter meals are much more reasonably priced and still very large serves. I recommend the chicken caesar wrap, but please don’t fool yourself into thinking it’s ‘healthy’, it’s packed with croutons and crispy bacon and you get those Hog Tail Fries on the side as well. The main reason I like the Glenelg one is you can sit outside on the balcony, above Jetty Road, and have some nice views. On that note keep your eyes open when you’re looking for the entrance, as it’s just a small doorway, then you head up a big flight of stairs. Fri and Sat it’s open until late which may be earlier or later then I’ve specified. In a nutshell-like a pig at a trough!
