While their café is more famous and filled with people, those waiting for their takeaway coffees can go for a wander around the art gallery to which the café is attached. It’s in a beautiful heritage building and has a large art space downstairs and also an attic upstairs providing more art on display. The exhibitions are constantly changing and shows a whole range of various art, from sculpture to photography to paintings to interactive protest exhibitions from the likes of Amnesty International. It’s great fun to sit on a couch in the café and watch the artists run around installing their exhibition getting it just right, and then the next day getting to walk around and see their work. It’s a great location and inspiring place to see works of art!

A dimly-lit gallery space in one of Fremantle’s prime heritage buildings. Photography and painting feature heavily here with the occasional sculpture exhibitions as well. The combined café-gallery experience makes for an accessible and vibrant weekend event, plus it’s in the heart of beautiful Fremantle, so plenty of other shops, sites and restaurants to continue on to. Lots of Australian artists are represented here, some in the earlier stages of their careers, others well-established. Have yet to see an exhibition that’s wowed me, or proven particularly innovative. But it’s all a bit subjective with art isn’t it?
