History
Established in 1984.
Japingka Gallery formed from the Aboriginal art and design business Desert Designs which began in Fremantle, Western Australia in 1984. The company marketed art alongside Aboriginal designs on textiles, clothing and fashion accessories. Japingka Gallery subsequently set up as a specialist Aboriginal art gallery at 47 High Street in 1995.
Japingka Gallery expanded from its base of Aboriginal artists from the Kimberley to include artists of the Central and Western Deserts, Arnhem Land and northern Queensland. The gallery then established its exhibition programme to cover art from all regions of Aboriginal Australia.
