Its far from the best or worst Vietnamese food I’ve encountered. Big serving sizes, fresh ingredients and attentive service. Wouldn’t rush back but was a nice enough experience. Mush more impressive options abound in this neck of the woods.

Quite popular with the student crowd. Unimpressed by the bland main dishes. Not a drop of chilli to be found, but lots of cornflour used as a thickener.

Rice vermicelli with grilled pork is the best I’ve had in Melbourne. Probably best outside Vietnam. Consistently fresh and delicious. Pity no one seems to rice paper spring rolls. That would be stellar.

I got take out from here for the first time last week and was so impressed. First of all the staff are super friendly and helpful. They insisted I sit whilst I waited and gave me an iced water. Little things, but very much appreciated. When I got my phở home I was really taken by the level of care. The broth was in a tub and they had put cling wrap on the inside to prevent spillages. There were three little pots of sauces, loads of fresh Thai basil, bean sprouts, chilli and lime(all carefully packed) a generous amount of noodles and raw beef for the phở. That was the only thing that surprised me was the beef, with other takeaway the beef is already cooked or in the broth, so I think the Vietnamese rose way is much better. The only downer for me was that it took 20 mins for me to get home so my broth wasn’t as hot as it should be to cool the beef — my bad! I would definitely come back to try eating and in and recommend take out, all up I was in and out in 10 mins.

Major fan and new local favourite. The coleslaw we had was so fresh and clean — could easily have that every day. Then we went a bit nuts. Crispy chicken, phở, soup, noodles — it was all delicious. The staff were awesome and lovely and the bill was totally reasonable. We will be back and stoked to find such an awesome little spot so close to home!

We discovered this place on one of our regular walks down Brunswick St to Coles and in the window saw a lady devouring what looked like the most delicious bowl of laksa. Made a note to comeback to try it and boy am I glad to make this discovery! The restaurant was 2/3rds full on a Tuesday night and surprisingly the service was quite good. We had the: entrée sized vegetable laksa $ 5.50 — 9⁄10; beef and beef balls phở $ 10 — 7.5÷10; rice vermicelli with grilled pork $ 12 — 8.5÷10 Finding a good Vietnamese restaurant within walking distance from home is pretty amazing especially considering Richmond is just a tad too far for a stroll. We were both pretty happy here and most definitely would be back.

When you’ve got man flu, you need serious phở, and that’s what I got. The special chicken had plenty of liver etc which is just how I like it(pick the nutrition geek). Cheap and cheerful, friendly staff. This is now my local go to phở place.

YUMYUMYUM! Great value and yummy food. I ordered a vegetarian laksa and it was SOOOOO good. Easily the best laksa I’ve had in this area. Kickass! I’ve also eaten the rice vermecelli too — just $ 9.50 and also really good. My boyfriend had some chicken with cantonese sauce — he wasn’t a fan so I think it can be a little hit and miss — but go the laksa and I don’t think you can go wrong.

Insanely good value in an ocean of poor-value places. The vermicelli bowls are the best I’ve had; the beef in vine leaf and the grilled sliced pork are both sensational. The crispy fried noodles and all the appetizers are good too. Did I mention that it’s $ 9.50 for a vermicelli bowl dinner? It can get packed on weekend nights, but so is pretty much the rest of Brunswick Street. I love this place.

First of all — mad kudos to whoever updated the business information to include the opening hours! That really helped out a lot and proved my point that Unilocal is extremely useful and all my friends should sign up for it. Unilocal isn’t paying me for this advertising. And by advertising I mean annoying my friends. Anyway… I came here with a group of friends and we were seated right away. Ambiance: It’s pretty small and I imagine it is a place that is fairly popular and therefore constantly busy, so it is definitely worth it to book ahead. I came on a Sunday night and managed to get a table, but don’t bet on it. Customer Service: Our waitress was attentive and helpful despite the mad rush. One thing I do have to suggest is to bring all the food at the same time when it’s a group, that way everyone can eat at the same time without having an odd few people out. Food: I ordered the Crispy Chicken w/Rice and it was fantastic! The chicken was tender with ample amounts of flavour and lemony zest soaked in, the rice was well made, priced at less than 10 dollars… yep, nothing wrong with that dish! I haven’t had a bite from any of my friends’ dishes, but received pretty good reports from everybody. — I would definitely come here again and it is near the top for one of my favourite Vietnamese restaurants in Melbourne. NOTES: ~ They don’t have too many options for Phở. If you’re seeking only Phở and want a decent selection, it’s probably best to try another place.

Viet Rose does simple Vietnamese food very well. It’s also quick and relatively cheap. Being a bit of a creature of habit, I’ve always ordered the same items off the menu(namely: the spring rolls for starter and the cubed garlic beef dish for main), which are both delicious. But recently, I shared one of their whole baked fish dishes with a friend, which was insanely good(and pretty impressive on the eyes too). I’m now inspired to work my way through their menu, because I’m quite confident that everything there will be impressive.

This is a pretty simple looking eatery that doesn’t try to trick you with beautiful décor or furniture. It has tried to fit as many tables as possible in the room, and on occasion they are all needed as this place can get pretty busy. Simple and clean is what best describes the view, but simple isn’t a word that I’d use for the food. I had one of the yummiest laksas I’ve had in a long time here last week. It was rich with flavour and large in size. I also snacked on some spring rolls that were pretty decent. The service here is a lot like the décor, simple and quick. There isn’t any effort to befriend you or enquire about your health, it’s all business. Not that they shove you out the door as soon as you finish your meal, on the contrary, I felt quite comfortable just chilling out after the meal and sipping on tea, while the slowing down staff checked out what was happening on the TV behind the bar.

Ah Viet Rose, you complete me. I’m a huge fan of Vietnamese food and really dig what these folk do. It’s slightly more expensive that most Vietnamese in Melbourne, but the quality is always good, the produce fresh and the serves generous. As a previous reviewer mentioned, this is a great lazy option for an easy meal out. I prefer to dine in if I’m gonna eat Viet Rose as the folk are super nice and they treat you with a generosity of spirit that is infectious. The menu is enormous and the spring rolls are the best around. I don’t usually stray too far into seafood with Vietnamese food, but the couple of fish dishes(Szechuan fillet and a scallop thing) have been excellent. They also stray pretty heavily into Chinese standards, so if there’s a fuss pot in the house, they’ll find something on the menu to like.

Like most Vietnamese restaurants, Viet Rose has a wide variety of Vietnamese-Chinese favourites. Most of the dishes are flavoursome, served promptly and are cheap compared to some other Brunswick Street eateries. What I love at Viet Rose however is the Broken rice. In case you’re not acquainted with this dish — it’s a classic Vietnamese favourite that includes a beautiful pork chop seasoned in fragrant lemongrass, shredded pork and vermicelli and topped with a sunny side up egg on a bed of broken rice. In the past broken rice was thought to be cheaper and less desirable but is also known for its nuttier, more starchy flavour. It S quite hard to understand but if you try broken rice and then have some long grain rice, you’ll notice the difference. I usually order an ice cold Vietnamese coffee to end the very satisfying and cheap meal on a sweet note.

Whenever my friend and I are feeling poor on a Sunday night but can’t be bothered cooking, we go to Viet Rose, a low-key eatery in the vein of the Vietnamese cafes in Abbotsford. Just how poor we are depends on how well we eat, but the great thing about this place is that even if you(or I) can only afford an $ 8 or $ 10 meal, there’s something warm and filling and tasty to be had. On my poorest nights I go the spring rolls or sugarcane prawns with rice vermicelli, both of which are as simple as that sounds but with a little chilli dressing are all a weary man needs after a big weekend. On more cashed up days, spring rolls to start(these are some of the best on Brunswick St) and a bowl of seafood laksa or hot and sour soup, washed down with a Singha. We’ve been doing this so long that the staff remember us and on occasion will chuck in a couple extra springers.
