Favourite Vietnamese in Melbourne. Great pad Thai; you can ask for extra vegetables in it. Very reasonably priced, and everything is very fresh(rather than some other Vietnamese restaurants that can be greasy).

Whenever I find myself drinking at the Black Cat on Brunswick Street, my drinking companions inevitably find me looking forlornly into the distance, dribble running down my chin. I am dreaming about eating at Café 58 on Johnston Street. Café 58 is not your typical Vietnamese restaurant concentrating far more on the Chinese influenced side of the cuisine — with more sizzling stir fry’s and deep fried food than your average Vietnamese restaurant. But you won’t find me complaining. The salt and pepper calamari is absolutely delicious, as is the plum battered duck. In fact I am fully prepared to do without the usual delicate flavours of Phở and fresh herbs which are the normally the staple of Vietnamese diners, in order to get my fix. There are always a range of special dishes to try, which in some ways I find quite frustrating. I already want to try to work my way through the normal menu only to get waylaid by the daily specials. But either way I am happy to bring a bottle of wine to this BYO restaurant and settle down and loosen my belt — I’m in it for the long haul.

An awesome Fitzroy-based Vietnamese restaurant with an incredible menu and an inexplicable penchant for Van Morrison. What’s not to love? Café 58 is one of the best Vietnamese eateries I’ve found in Melbourne and although not falling within the budget category you’re almost guaranteed a pretty spectacular meal at Café 58 for around about the $ 25 per person mark. Another great thing about Café 58? BYO is allowed and the staff are so sweet I almost wanted to take them home with me. Them and their incredible food. I shared the delicious salt and pepper pork along with a lemongrass beef stir fry and left sated but wanting to go back — pronto — for more. If you love Vietnamese, you’ll adore 58. Simple as that.

It was a cold winter day and I was in search of some phở, Vietnamese noodle soup, to keep myself warm. Although Brunswick Street does have a few Vietnamese restaurants, only one restaurant actually serves phở. Unfortunately, it wasn’t Café 58. Because of my want of phở and this expectation not being met, Café 58 initially underwhelmed me. However, this has changed. Now I’m a regular at this place. I love the food, which is mostly Vietnamese with some generic Thai(pad thai) and Chinese(Chinese broccoli) dishes. My favourite entrée is the quail — cooked until crispy with succulent and juicy meat on the inside. I’m also a fan of their curries, which is done in a Thai style, rather than a Vietnamese style. Vietnamese style curry is closer to a soup with more stock and less coconut milk. For a meal that will cost you $ 25-$ 35 a person, including food and wine(their wine list isn’t amazing, but affordable), and great service(they’re on top of it), Café 58 is one of the best Vietnamese options in Fitzroy and surround area.

Oh man, we had dinner here the other night and it’s fuckin’ outrageously good. Café 58 serve Vietnamese food, flat out and simple. We stuck to the favourites as we were pretty late(10pm-ish) and though they stayed open for us, we got a bit of an impression that they didn’t want us to stay too long. The salt and pepper squid was some of the best I’ve had. The salty crust was so crunchy and the calamari so fresh and delicious… Man, my mouth’s watering for that shit right now. We also engulfed some sizzling beef and an awesome tofu and vegetable dish. Though they were closing up on this particular night, they did remain open for us, which is a big plus in my book. And there was none of that pissy waiter nonsense when we were told we could stay. In fact, it was the waiter who invited us in. I’d go back for sure.

Café 58 is without doubt one of my favourite Vietnamese places in Melbourne. The fact that it is situated on Johnston Street in Fitzroy and not the Vietnamese haven on Victoria Street probably accounts for me labeling it a ‘hidden gem’. Unlike most Asian restaurants, Café 58 delivers high quality service and prides itself on that service. Whilst being a Vietnamese restaurant, you can also get a number of dishes that have a Thai and Chinese flavor to them. My personal favourites are the fried quails with lemon dipping sauce, the duck and mushroom, and the deep-fried ice cream to finish. Café 58 is probably slightly more expensive than the budget Vietnamese places you find on Victoria Street but it is still a very inexpensive place to eat. The menu is massive and every single new dish always seems to be tasty and full of flavor. It baffles me how we always seem to get a table here each time we go in.
