We popped into Kommune as an interlude during a stroll down Brunswick Street on the day of the 2012 Hispanic Fiesta. We just needed a break. And a drink. The street was packed. Most pubs were packed. Kommune looked calm and inviting. Just what we needed to rest our zonked, Radiohead-blown minds. The place had quirk. The back wall lined with the pages of old books. A window framed with old suit cases. Part of the ceiling veiled with open umbrellas. As ya do… Best of all, behind the bar, a wall lined with bottles of wine. Get in me please. We started with the 2011 Deviation Road Sauvignon Blanc. When in Victoria, drink South Australian wine, of course. We followed up with the 2011 Clarence House Pinot Noir. Why not Tasmania, too? Great wines for a great little place. A jazz band filled the small, idiosyncratic room, with the sound of keys, bass and sax at about half five. If it wasn’t for a rumbling tummy and the beckoning of The Vegie Bar a few doors down, we’d have made a bit of a night of it. This would certainly be a regular of ours if were lived in Fitzroy. ++++ VEGANFRIENDLINESS — Many of the wines, being from smaller producers, are vegan – they haven’t been made using egg or milk products for fining. We didn’t eat at Kommune, and the tapas menu looked meat /dairy heavy. I’m sure, being Melbourne, that a vegan option wouldn’t be too much trouble. One can always enquire.
