Ruby Red Dress is a cute little store that always surprises me with the amount of clothes that they can fit inside. It’s a small space and yet there is a great array of clothes and accessories crammed on to hangers, on mannequins or on top of surfaces. I like visiting Ruby Red Dress because it has a nice cheerful atmosphere and the clothes are interesting. The other day when I stopped by I noticed that they had some cute crochet crop tops in for summer and a considerable collection of mini shorts. There are cute summer dresses in cotton with floral and vibrant patterns, boots, and bright wedges. I’ve noticed that they usually seem to have a pretty good range of cowboy boots during the colder months too. The service is friendly and cheerful and the sales assistants do a really good job at helping you work your way through the clothes and making suggestions about matching accessories.

Ruby Red Dress is truly the wardrobe that time forgot. What began as a family passion at the Camberwell market has developed into one of Melbourne’s most exciting vintage retail offering. Ruby Red Dress has three locations around inner Melbourne and each store is a well organised treasure trove of eclectic pieces. The lavishly decorated window displays provide a tantalising sample of what each boutique has to offer. The store is free from pretension and exorbitant price tags that has become common amongst vintage clothing traders. Ruby Red Dress is a one stop destination store. An entire ensemble can be constructed from hat to shoes courtesy of skillful sourcing and a strong understanding of style. Racks flow with tulle, stripes, lace, fur, polka dots and silk in a rainbow of colours. Guys can get excited about vintage imported band tees, Italian leather goods, unique knits, jackets and a range of denim. The standard far exceeds the usual competitive offering of lumpy Lacoste cardigans and cracked cowboy boots. Ruby Red Dress is truly a gem in an industry drowning in over priced flannel.

From its sweet name to its even sweeter staff, Ruby Red Dress is a little retro gem. About the size of a modest walk in wardrobe, Ruby Red Dress sells a selection of mostly seventies and eighties garb that, stylistically, falls about midway between glam and rock. Being a fan of earlier vintage, I’ve not yet bought anything from Ruby Red Dress, but if your style is more colourful eighties sundresses and stonewash denim separates than gamine guipure shifts and little lace bed jackets, you’ll love Ruby Red Dress. I popped in yesterday for a browse and spotted a few gems such as a brightly coloured Mexican embroidered smock dress and vintage fur jackets galore, and the sales girl could not have been sweeter. Ruby Red Dress deserves its reputation as one of Fitzroy’s best — and cutest — vintage boutiques.
