I absolutely love this spot. I have been two times so far and both times were fantastic. I got the«brekky bowl» with vanilla yogurt, homemade raspberry rhubarb compote, homemade granola and honey, an iced coffee, and a homemade rocky road muffin. The coffee was rich and tasty. The brekky bowl was phenomenal– the compote especially! The muffin was freshly baked, and packed with chocolate chunks, peanut butter, banana and pink marshmallows. Sounds like a chaotic combination but as far as my taste buds are concerned, black pony café knows what they’re doing! I will certainly be back. The two friends I was there with each enjoyed what they ordered as well.(However, you will end up spending $ 15-$ 20 for breakfast if you order food as well as a drink).

The café is beautiful. I love the look and feel of the place. Grab a seat outside and you can see the ocean. However staff seems clueless. They won’t be able to tell you what blend of coffee they serve without checking three times! Kitchen closes long before close time. We got a Mango frappé and Mixed Berry smoothie. Frappé’s taste like water, smoothies like warm flavored milk. I recommend the Affogato if you like the taste of strong coffee.

An adult addition to the beachside brunch fare in Coogee with a thoughtful menu including many organic and gluten free options. Prices reflect the more sophisticated offering. The crowd contains the sunny Coogee crowd but it feels strange in this café, which belongs more in a Newtown or Surry Hills setting. Like many new venues in Sydney, staff don’t have a clue about customer service and shuffle around looking anaemic and hungover, again validating the feel that this should be in a hipster area rather than surrounded by families in a bright beach side street. The choice for musical ambience was also some obscure, arty, probably foreign selection. We had to wait to be acknowledged, I had to get the menu myself, then another wait to be served. The waiting continued with the food, which was thankfully, worth it. The dishes came warm and beautifully presented. I had a spicy chorizo with a poached egg and shredded prosciutto on bread, with a side of avocado and Tim had the eggs benedict. The juices were freshly squeezed and the coffee was nice and strong. While the food was a saving grace, it’s not enough to justify the bad service and the slightly higher prices in a street which offers other hearty, cheery and less complicated brunch experiences.
