Hoff Optometry

They are thieves!!! Taking 60% commissions on contact lenses is unacceptable! Spoke with the doctor who was not nice and answered «this is what it costs me to run business»… I had a prescription so this guy did not even run business. For the respect of money and business don’t go to this place even if the store looks nice.

First of all, this is a clean, sleek shop with some high-​end eyewear. The space is very nice as one would expect on Abbott Kinney.
I called Hoff Optometry seven days ago to make an appointment for a an eye exam. I spoke with a woman who was quick and efficient. We agreed upon the following Wed at 3pm and I hung up. Today, 7 days later, I walked into Hoff for the first time, 15 minutes early for my appointment.
I was greeted warmly by the receptionist and asked my name. I replied, he looked puzzled and asked me my name again. I repeated. He politely explained that he didn’t see me on the schedule. I scrolled through my phone, found the call and gave him the date/​time I booked the appointment. He looked through their digital caller-​ID and confirmed that he had a record of my call, but there was no appointment for me. So the woman on the phone last week probably failed click the button and confirm it in their computer system. Mistakes happen. But what occurred next is the reason I believe Hoff failed.
The receptionist conferred with a female manager who briefly glanced around the corner at me and spoke. I explained again that I had a confirmed appointment at 3pm and that I booked it 7 days ago. She went back around the corner and spoke to the receptionist out of my line of sight. The manager never returned. But the receptionist explained that they were already booked for the afternoon. His solution… Hoff would gladly schedule an appointment for another day. Uh-​huh. I scheduled appropriately, left my office early and arrived 15 minutes ahead of my appointment time. But Hoff’s only solution (which did not include an apology) was to inconvenience me.
I am also a professional, just like Dr Hoff. I have a staff of people and clients who depend on me. I made an appointment in advance and arrived early. So I don’t think it was unreasonable to expect someone to see me this afternoon, even if it meant a delay. Yet the only option I was offered was to reschedule and leave. I declined.
I chose Hoff because of the good Unilocal reviews and because I live in the neighborhood. But customer service is important to me, and Hoff failed today. The manager never bothered to come to the reception area, speak with me directly and take responsibility. Mistakes are inevitable in any business, but it is important to take responsibility and work with customers to find agreeable solutions. Hoff made no attempt to do this today.

Dr. Hoff is awesome! I’ve been seeing him for a couple years, and every time I go it’s totally hassle-​free. Everyone is super nice, close to my house and there’s a cute pup! I have high maintenance eyeballs (terrible eyesight and my eyes are literally allergic to contacts), and Dr. Hoff was the first person to figure out about my allergies and get me on dailies, which has totally changed my life. He makes sure I get home safe if I have to get my eyes dilated, and re-​ordering contacts is a breeze. Highly recommended!

I first saw James Hoff where he fitted me for a pair of contact lenses thirty years ago. I was a tough patient because I was sensitive to even half a di-​opter of wrong correction. He was the only optometrist who hung in with me until I got the right lenses.
I lost touch with Doctor Hoff, because I had Lasik surgery and didn’t need corrective lenses. (He directed me to the best doctor for that BTW) I recently needed reading glasses and found Dr. Hoff had opened his own practice on Abbot Kinney Blvd. in Venice and was very happy I did. As always he was incredibly thorough and caring with my examination and it was also great to see him again.
You will not find a more kind, competent or caring doctor than James Hoff for your vision care needs.

I’ve seen Dr. Hoff twice in the past 2 years — he is an excellent optometrist. Friendly staff and a very effusive but well behaved dog will attend you in the waiting room. My glasses were ready in less than 10 days both times. This is an office I expect to continue seeing as long as I am in the general area.
Be forewarned: parking in this part of Venice is a huge hassle — especially Monday mornings and Tuesdays before 2pm. I usually park in a nearby neighborhood and walk over, which on Abbot Kinney Blvd. is a pleasant experience.

Best optometrist ever! He is great at what he does and provides you with excellent service. His assistant Marilyn is also great! She is very helpful and takes her time helping you select glasses. Don’t hesitate booking an appointment with Hoff! He is an amazing doctor and he takes his time with his patients.

Literally less than 5 seconds of walking in, we asked «Do you accept walk ins?» The receptionist said «No appointment only.» We looked at each other in silence. Thinking to ourselves. Didn’t want to offer to help make an appointment? Too busy doing what ever you are doing on our computer? So we said «Ok.» and walked out. Thanks for the pleasant welcome.

Ehw!!! This place has a bad customer service! We walked in asking if they take walk ins and the guy upfront just said that they don’t and he freakin just stared at us as if we are stupid dumb people who don’t have appointments and telling us indirectly with his face reactions to leave now. Well at least ask us if we want to make an appointment. You think you’re too cool to be infront of your computer and giving a bad customer service? Well you suck. I thought this place would be nice to get our eyes checked. Turned out NOT because of your employee. He’s working on 07÷06÷15 at 12PM i shouldve got his name!

Best eye doctor EVER. Hands Down.
And let’s not forget the ever amazing Marylin. She brings the meaning of customer service to a whole different level!
This place is top notch. Dr. Hoff has been able to solve some of my eye issues that no one else has ever been able to figure out. I grew up going to Lens Crafters (slaps face) and Hoff Optometry makes the former feel like the Kmart or Payless of eye examinations. For years my prescription glasses would cause my excruciating headaches. Doctor after doctor blamed it on this and that, but Hoff was able to find the perfect prescription. He also discovered an allergy that was lurking on my eyes that made wearing contacts very uncomfortable. Hoff immediately have me a steroid prescriptions and changed the brand of my contacts, and now wearing contacts has never been so comfortable! For a while I thought that I would never be able to wear glasses do to the pain that it caused me, but Hoff made the impossible possible, and I am forever grateful!
And I also want to point out that Hoff has the best breath. I know that to some this may seem like a weird thing to bring up. But I have been around countless doctors who talk directly in your face and have the WORST breath. I never understand it. It ruins the whole experience. But Hoff has the freshest breath lol. And I am forever grateful that he cares enough about his clients to maintain good hygiene.

I have always hated going to any medical facility. It’s inconvenient, people are often rude, you feel less healthy leaving than you did on your way in.
I’ve come to Hoff for over a year now. Without a doubt, they have the best medical operation/​facility i’ve experienced in my 33 years. Marylin, the optician and receptionist has such a warm, welcoming presence. I’ve never had to wait to see the doctor. They handle what are usually the annoyances of getting any medical work done with such positivity and professionalism. They effortlessly handle the insurance, replacing very lightly scratched lenses (for FREE), ordering new contacts (for $ 160 less than 1800 Contacts). I get compliments on my glasses from Hoff (Bevel) all the time after being embarrassed to wear any pair previously (I have an extremely strong prescription).
Dr. Hoff cares about his patients. The place is super clean and has the latest equipment. It turns out, that really does improve your overall experience in medical. Their latest piece of equipment let me get my eye health exam done in seconds. This used to require dilation of the eye and was super inconvenient – you lose half your day to headache and light sensitivity. Instead, you get instant feedback, a beautiful nebulae-​like high resolution image of your entire eye. He took the time to explain to me the ways in which this exam can provide insight into your overall health – tumors, high blood pressure etc.
I’m a big fan of small local businesses that get it right, and that’s Hoff Optometry.

Dr. Hoff rocks. He’s super kind, funny, gentle, and knowledgeable — all things that make a good optometrist! My brother and I both went in for eye exams and both loved him and felt super comfortable with him. This means a lot as we both have had the same optometrist for 7 – 8 years and had to change. I’m really glad we found Dr. Hoff! His eye exam was fun and I felt like I was living in the future.
I also really like the rest of the staff. They are awesome. They helped me find the perfect pair of frames amongst the wall of super stylish choices.
Also, they have a super cute dog in the place. He’s so sweet, my brother just goes crazy for him. I don’t even really like dogs and I found myself wanting him to sit on my lap. SUPER well behaved, so don’t be nervous when you see the «don’t let the dog out» sign on the door. He never barks.

My optometrist of 12+ years ended his practice recently and moved to the East Coast leaving me with no one for my yearly eye exam.
By a chance meeting on Abbot Kinney, I was referred to Dr. Hoff and his gracious staff arranged an appt for me the very next day.
He was so nice, intelligent, funny, thorough, explains everything to you easily and has officially become my new optometrist for any future eye needs.
If you’re looking for a great eye doctor, then look no further than Dr. Hoff. You’ll be super happy he’s taking care of your eyes!!!

My husband & I made our appointments for a Wednesday early evening. The sign on the door to not let the dog out, spoke to my animal-​lovin’ heart, making this spot feel much less prestigious & more laid back!
All his equipment was beyond the other machines that have been used in all previous visits with other eye doctors. No puff of air & the eye dilating solution wasn’t yellow/didn’t stain.
It was purely enjoyable! They have a great selection of high end frames $$$ and caring staff members! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Looking forward to stoping by again in a few days to play with the pup (& pick up our contacts)! WIN WIN .:.

I couldn’t decide between two colors and the guy helping me took me outside with a mirror to see them both in the sunlight. I later found out that it was Dr. Hoff himself. Super nice guy.

Best Optometrist I’ve ever had. Dr. Hoff is kind, knows his stuff, has the best stuff to keep your eyes checked-​up and he is ultra-​thorough. I feel like my eyes are in safe hands with him :).
He was able to identify a problem in my husband’s eyes that hadn’t been properly diagnosed his whole-​life.
I love Dr. Hoff, his sweet dog, and his attentive staff. The place is bright, clean, well decorated and ultra-​inviting.

Love this place! They have the most beautiful selection of frames! Are professional yet very personal. The receptionist is so so kind, I felt like I was trying glasses in with a friend vs a sales person!
I bought glasses by Barton Perrera and constantly get compliments on how nice yet unique they are. Classic with a twist… they are a deep blue acetate! Totally obsessed!

They have a pretty awesome collection of frames.
Not to mention the only optometry that stocks Moscot and takes insurance.
My only gripe is that their lenses are rather expensive…

This was a great Unilocal find.
It was easy to make an appointment, they’re open until 7 which helped schedule-​wise, and Dr. Hoff was smart, thorough, informative, and knows his field.
I will be back to get frames and highly recommend Hoff Optometry.

I always have mixed feelings about abbot kinney. It’s so beautiful from the shops to the galleries and the palm trees during sunset… But this street is also a runway for people to show off and it contains tons of snobbish attitude… I always claim that I just live here — but that’s about it.
So I really found Hoff to be a pleasant surprise. He was professional even though I was late for my appointment (sorry :) and I loved his office… definitely a gem on this street!
