History
Established in 1988.
John McCulley founded McCulley Design Group (now McCulley Design Lab) in 1988, and has played a multidisciplinary role in the development of strategic planning, branding and design for such clients as Amtrak, Bank One, Bank of America, Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute, California Bank & Trust, The City of Del Mar, Chriscraft, Cox Communications, DC Shoes, Four Seasons Resorts, Hewlett-Packard, Hilton, Jack in the Box, Oliver Stone, Time Warner, Rob Quigley FAIA, the University of California San Diego and Muttropolis. McCulley is also actively involved with the custom design of private residences located throughout Southern California.
Janet McCulley is Managing Director of McCulley Design Lab and provides strategic marketing communications services, copywriting, research and creative direction for all McCulley Design Lab clients.

Business Owner
Previously to founding McCulley Design Group, John was Senior Design Director at Fitch + Richardson Smith, Assistant Professor of Industrial Design at The Ohio State University, Acting Department Head and Assistant Professor at Montana State University, Design Instructor in the Industrial Design Department at The University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign, and Design Director at Amoco Oil Company.
John’s work has been published in: American Banking Association Journal, Architecture, Architectural Record, The Architectural Review, The Architecture of Stations and Terminals, Computers in Banking, Contract Magazine, Designing Corporate Identity, Identity, ID Magazine, The Los Angeles Times, Progressive Architecture, SEGD, TIME, VM+SD, and Visual Merchandising3.
John was Chair of the City of Del Mar Design Review Board, and served as Vice President and Board of Directors for the Rancho Santa Fe Historical Society, and the San Dieguito Boys and Girls Club.
