Specialties
The Henry is a museum of contemporary art and ideas, known for for taking risks and for allowing space for uncertain outcome and unexpected connections. The museum is internationally recognized for its groundbreaking exhibitions, for being first in the field to champion artists who go on to global acclaim, and for premiering and sponsoring new works by artists of note.
We provide a platform for a broad range of artists, experiences, and points of view to encourage the exploration of new ideas in contemporary art and ideas. Through individual experiences with art, we inspire our visitors to consider unexpected new pathways.
History
Established in 1927.
Founded in 1927 when Horace C. Henry donated funds and a collection of 19th– and early 20th-century paintings to the University of Washington, the Henry Art Gallery was the first public art museum in the state of Washington. Expanded in 1997, the Henry quadrupled in size adding more gallery space, an auditorium, a café, art storage, and collections research.
The James Turrell Skyspace «Light Reign» opened in July of 2003. Combining architecture, sculpture, and atmosphere, the work is not only a spectacular addition to the Henry’s permanent collection, but it is also an important part of the building’s architecture.
