Specialties
The gilding studio specializes in traditional water gilding and mordant (oil) gilding for picture frames and furniture. Charles is also a skilled restorer of gilded antiques while also offering glass gilding for mirrors, the basis for the ancient art of Verre Églomisé. Gilding workshops are offered monthly for those interested in exploring this ancient craft.
History
Established in 1989.
Charles apprenticed in the field of glass gilding while a member of the Visual Merchandising team at Saks Fifth Avenue. He traveled to 28 cities nationwide providing hundred of gilded logos on the entranceway doors for SFA. Through further study, Charles expanded his knowledge into oil gilding, traditional water gilding, and restoration. He established a home base in Seattle, WA in the Fall of 1988, accepting private commissions and connecting with members of the community including the Pacific Science Center where he participated in a three-month long series of hands-on gilding demonstrations during the direct from Paris Gold! Exhibit. He was later to become the Editor of the Society of Gilder’s International Journal from 2004 – 2007. Today, Charles practices his art and craft in his Seattle studio along the northern tip of Lake Union at Gasworks Gallery, home to a large group of independent artists.
