Best Western Plus Royal Oak Hotel

The room was good and clean. What really made this place 3 stars was the terrible wifi service and the pittance of a breakfast given in the morning. Nothing but sugary snacks and crap food with preservatives and chemical additives. I went to mcdonalds across the street because it was healthier and they actually served eggs and hash browns. The conditioner was loud and there wasnt a lower setting, it always blew a large amount of air. Overall good, but it is those kind of things that ruin the hotel experience. I would expect more from a place that charges so much.

Clean, pet-​friendly hotel close drive to downtown area. Staff was incredibly courteous and accommodating, a pretty good continental breakfast was included and the facility has a nice pool. Not at all fancy, but I’ll take clean and courteous over fancy pants any day.

First, I have to say that I have stayed here twice before for a week or two at a time without any issue, it is a costly place to stay for any length of time, but a good location, but they do not offer any kind of discounted rate for longer stays. I arrived on a Sat. & the room i got smelled so bad i could hardly bare it, the carpet was filthy. They had no other room, so i slept with the pillow over my nose all night. The next day i received no apology and was told i should be grateful as i was being given a pool view room? which was exactly what i had pre booked? No one ever offered to help me with my bags. The second room I got was almost the same, carpet was also filthy but certainly didn’t smell as bad as the first one. It did however have a black hand print up the side of the bathroom door frame, & coffee stains running down the wall in the bathroom? how thoroughly do they clean, when such obvious things are over looked? I have a very well behaved little dog, but frankly didn’t like to see her laying on such a filthy carpet. After being there for over a week, i returned to my room one day, and my key wouldn’t work, so i went to the lobby. A man named Garrett looked on the computer to see why, and then in a loud & very condescending voice, (and in front of two other couples) said «there seems to be a problem with your credit card, i need another card right now before I can let you into your room, or I’ll have to ask you to leave the hotel»? I got no time to even respond, I tried to explain that i would have to go to my room in order to contact my bank in the UK, as perhaps they had put a security hold on it, or to at least figure out what was going on! With my dog pulling on her leash, and my arms full of things, I was forced to stand in the lobby and endure further humiliation. I asked to speak to a manager, and eventually he called Chase at home, who Immediately told him to give me a key to get into my room, which he then did. By this time i was in tears & shaking, I told him that I had Never been spoken to like that, especially by a «young kid». In order to avoid talking to Garrett again, i called reception much later, & got someone called Dan. I asked how much i owed so far, & he rudely snapped that the rate that was Pre agreed on, was now only for two days, & that it would be much higher? He told me that «I was not a preferred customer», despite the $ 1,700 I spend there each time i stay? I politely asked him not to put any calls through in the morning (as i was now so stressed and needed to sleep) I asked him for a wake up call later. He sniggered and said «you don’t want calls, then you do want calls… which is it»? Needless to say the following morning my phone started ringing at 7.30am, and there was no wake up call later! After avoiding reception until the evening, I went down to speak to the manager Naomi about the way i was treated. i told her what had happened, again there was no apology, she seemed delusional, & just kept repeating that she has wonderful staff, that she had been told by Garrett that I had called him names, and made a scene in the Lobby? Instead of rep remanding her staff, she kept minimising his attack on me? obviously, knowing I would report his actions, Garrett for armed himself by telling her a Very different version of events? If that wasn’t bad enough, i asked a French lady in the dining room if i could have a breakfast sandwich to take to my room (as the other lady Carol had offered me one night) she snapped my head off, saying «absolutely not, we are not allowed to do that»? I was later told by Naomi that guests actually take their food to their rooms just to avoid her rude behaviour! So why keep some body who’s so rude to guests? I told the front desk NOT to charge my card, as i wanted to pay in cash. I checked my accounts, & found multiple incorrect charges on my cards, as well as the authorisation which they insisted had NOT gone through, over which i was publicly flogged in the lobby? STILL No apology was forthcoming from any one. I printed my bank statements as Garrett wanted to have Naomi look at my bill. The next day, i was met by a very aggressive Naomi, who said she didn’t care about the charges, & refused to explain them to me. when I said i wanted to check out, she literally began shouting at me to give her a credit card, I said that i wanted a correct statement of my charges first, & she called the police on me? The officer was very sympathetic & advised me to file a complaint with BW. I ended up in the Emergency room with high blood pressure that nt .I payed almost $ 2,000 for this? They may seem pleasant when you first check in, stay a while & you’ll see their true colours! Naomi is a Disgrace as a manager! she actually had the gaul to say she could smell my little dog in the room. Really? You could have a heard of Baboons in that room & not smell them over that Carpet! Oh. and I was warned not to write a Unilocal review, or else???

This is a great place to stay with great customer service. The office manager Chase was very helpful, kind and sincere. My mom and I came to san luis obispo because her dear friend is in the hospital. During this very stressful time, Chase was genuinley sincere and compassionate. By being so nice he made my mom smile for the first time since she found out the news about her friend. Thank you Chase!
5 stars for a great hotel with even better customer service.

This is an excellent Best Western motel. The rooms are very large (the closet in our room was bigger than the one in our home) and are very well appointed. I appreciated the multitude of electric outlets. Our room, on the third floor, overlooked the sparkling pool, and yet we never heard a sound during the night. Everything was clean and tidy.
One suggestion if you have a member of your party who cannot maneuver stairs and suitcases, ask for a ground level or second floor room so that you can use the elevator that is tucked in behind the front office.
There is no covered parking. There are a couple of low-​cost restaurants next door, and there is a big-​box mall across the street.

Really noisy clientele who came in at 1:17AM and then another noisy group up early before 7AM who carried on a long, loud conversation in the hallway. Really rude. Wouldn’t recommend staying here on a Friday night…

You know how you have low expectations when you go to a best Western Hotel? Well this one vastly exceeded my expectations. The front lobby was courteous and allowed us to check in very late. We also had a lot of people staying in many different rooms and they were able to get us assigned to the same block.
There’s a fitness center which is very well-​maintained. It has a treadmill and elliptical and a workout bike. They also had weight machines. There were towels and water well-​stocked for our use.
The beds were sufficiently clean and warm, and the towels didn’t feel like those ones that of been washed and dried so frequently there like cardboard. And the amenities were well stocked.
I actually think that if I’m passing through San Luis Obispo again and I don’t want to pay exorbitant prices in hotel I would stay here again

We checked in at midnight Jan2−3. Beds were SO COMFORTABLE! Towels good quality. Flat screen TV, nice big bathroom with private dressing area, which was perfect for husband, daughter and 2 babies. Breakfast included breakfast burritos, oatmeal, waffles, biscuits & gravy (to each his own) fruit, yogurt, bagels, juice, coffee, and more, with plenty of room, clean and pleasant. Décor is dated, but we are glad the money was spent on comfort, carpets clean and not worn out. Staff friendly and helpful. We will choose this place again for a stop
on our long drives between Anaheim & Santa Rosa.

Really neat hotel. Love the happy hour with complementary wine, chips, crackers and cheeses. Very friendly staff and close to downtown.

Well we tried to get a hotel last minute in pismo but do to a clam festival they were sold out everywhere. My husband and I had a small window to have a little anniversary getaway and we found this hotel near the Madonna inn in San Luis Obispo and we’re glad we did. Usually I would just say it’s average because it is a best western not a four seasons but they added some special touches to go the extra mile! I think mon-​Thursday from 5 – 7 they had complimentary beer, wine, cheese and crackers for us as well as complimentary breakfast. The breakfast is just ok but hey, it’s free! The staff was so nice and the rooms were clean! Not too many noisy neighbors and lots of places to hike, shop and eat right near the hotel. we will definitely be back.

My husband travels often for work, I book the hotels and work remotely from the room so I see a lot of both the hotel and staff.
The staff is friendly, but not overly chatty which is great. The breakfast is bready and lame, I would have thought the «plus» would warrant a deluxe hot breakfast as in some Best Westerns, but they have limited fruit and yogurt so it was not all bad.
The rooms are large, clean and have balconies where you can take a little break from your room without actually leaving. The shower was nice, with plenty of hot water and pressure, but the tub was super shallow.
They have a nice pool and hot tub area. Although I have not gone swimming, I have lounged in the large sitting area and was very pleased. They have ample seating with full sun and shade options (you don’t have to drag around chairs). I relaxed with a book and soaked up some sun without being bothered, it was excellant!
The area is safe for walking and there are several stores within walking distance. Across the street is: Kohl’s, Sears, Sports Authority, Forever 21, Bed B&B, Gamestop, Radio Shack, Best Buy, Petco, Panera Bread, Sushi, Tahoe Joe’s, Buffet, Applebee’s as well as a Denny’s, McDonald’s and IHOP in the immediate area.
Downtown SLO is full of small quaint shops, it’s not really walking distance, but it is a super short drive or bus ride. The downtown area is full of pubs and restaurants, you will see a few scruffy homeless, but very few and they don’t approach.
If you notice a lake on the map next to the hotel, don’t break out your kayak or fishing gear because it’s all dried up! It’s still a popular park and the dried up lake has it’s own odd beauty, but no water… not even a puddle that I could see.
I love Best Westerns and I would totally stay here again, I even liked my room so much I will request the same one if I’m in the area.

This hotel was full of surprises. From the outside we sure were not expecting to be very pleased but that was totally not the case. Checking-​in and checking-​out was great, friendly, eager to assist in anyway, and explained amenities, services, and location of our room very well. Room smelled clean, looked clean and had nice bedding. The pool and hotel was a big surprise and the pool was much bigger and deeper than expected. Pool area was a nice place to hang out with our friends sharing a bottle of wine. Breakfast room was a bit crowded in the morning but expected being a holiday weekend. Food was good, coffee was good, and was well attended. All-​in-​all we all had a good experience, no problems, and all thought it was great value for the price. Night stayed was September 6, 2015.

The greeting given when arriving was incredibly friendly (as was the checkout). One of the truly warmest on this two week trip. The hotel itself was pretty standard though the room in back was very quiet. It had a nice balcony with a view of the pool. Microwave and frig were a plus. It was located about 2 miles from downtown SLO. It was a decent price compared to many of the other towns on the coast from Santa Cruz to Santa Barbara. The wifi worked well and the breakfast was standard fare. Overall a good solid hotel.

This was the only room available in SLO for the weekend on short notice. Cal Poly was having a big event for incoming students & their parents.
First, the good – front desk people were very personable & the pool area was quite nice.
However, the bad was VERY BAD – the room was dirty (especially the carpet; it was FILTHY) & the bathroom had obviously only had minimal cleaning done. The tiles in the bathroom were coming off, exposing mold. Yuck!
The first impression walking into the room was the bad SMELL. We opened the sliding glass door hoping it would dissipate with fresh air. No such luck. Then we tried turning the A/​C on high. That wasn’t a solution, either.
Avoid this place at all costs, especially when you have to shell out the high cost of the room.
SLO is great, though. Enjoy your visit!

This hotel is extremely overpriced for what you get. I had stayed at a Best Western in Williams, AZ, and had a positive experience there, so I trusted the brand. Having stayed at this one in San Luis Obispo, I would never stay there again.
First, what’s good. The room and, especially important for me, the bathroom, were of adequate size. There was tea available, albeit not a high quality tea. I bring my own just in case. The lights were bright – a real plus – and the furniture was all right.
The service is why I would not stay here again. The young woman at the desk when I arrived not only gave me inadequate instructions how to find my room (a fellow guest did that for me) but also pointed me in the opposite direction to downtown. The parking is extremely limited. If you don’t park early (say by 8:30 or 9), and your room is in the back, expect a too-​long walk to your room in cold weather.
Although I had taken down the quiet sign (their version of «do not disturb’) when I left for the first day, and the house keepers saw me leave, my room was not served at all when I came back that night. My used cup and dirty napkins were lying in front of the TV, the trash was not emptied, – nothing. And I know they entered the room because they had turned the lights on. I called the office and they had some man come with fresh towels and he emptied the waste baskets. The same thing happened the next day – no service. I didn’t even bother to call, though the trash cans were full. And on checkout day, the noise from the house keeper’s plastic bags in the wind and her music was very disturbing. I went out and asked her (in the adjacent room) to turn down the music. She turned it off, but why should I have to ask?
No, I would never stay there again.

The front desk staff is great.
Hotel in terms of appearance and rooms could be touched up a bit.
Room with 2 queen beds are clean and beds are comfortable, however room on the small side, especially with 4 adults.

Free wine, cheese, crackers, snacks in the evening
Pool area nice.
Excellent location: IHOP, Panera Bread, Apple bees, Starbucks, and Mc Donald’s across the street from hotel. Off the 101 highway

good clean rooms, nice bathrooms, quiet, comfortable beds. The only suggestion I would have is to replace toiletries nightly as we found ourselves running low. Would recommend if staying In SLO but, it is a 40 minute walk from the ‘downtown’ of SLO.

I have a fondness for roadside inns stemming from a childhood of road tripping across the country that seems singular within my group of friends. There’s something about having a room where you can look out your window and see your car parked just a few yards away that doesn’t exist in the land of valet-​only destination hotels. In the realm of three-​star motel/​hotels, this particular Best Western is a great value:
*Free in-​room wi-​fi. Although becoming more common, this is always appreciated.
*Free breakfast. This spot offers a lot more than the usual garbage continental breakfasts where you just get some bagels/​breads along with juice, coffee and milk. You’re given a pretty decent selection of fruits, yogurts and cereals along with a self-​serve fresh waffle maker with batter dispenser. (Random aside: the «continent» in continental breakfast does indeed refer to Europe.)
There’s also a few things I didn’t use or check out such as the fitness center, a business center and the pool.
My main reason for writing this review however is to give credit to the front desk staff, and Chase in particular. He was all smiles from the moment I walked in and gave me restaurant recommendations after asking what I was in the mood for, including detailed directions and parking tips. (Incidentally the paid downtown parking in SLO barely qualifies for the term. When’s the last time you were charged only 75 cents an hour at any place south of the 210 freeway?) He then proceeded to tell me about viewpoints I would enjoy and uncrowded beaches popular more with the locals instead of the tourist throngs. M. Gustave and the Society of the Crossed Keys would have been very proud of this level of service (had they been real people). Chase gets a *huge* thumbs up.
If you’re in SLO or Morro Bay just to visit and do some hiking and general sightseeing, this place is a great choice. If you’re planning to propose to your girlfriend, okay maybe you’ll want to look for something a little more romantic. One more tip: I got this place through a blind buy on

Enjoyed my stay at this Best Western. It was when I got home that I became annoyed.
They charged me $ 275.00 additional fee on my credit card because they said the room smelled. I don’t smoke and had no guests. So how could this happen? I contacted my credit card company to dispute the fee and also talked to the Best Western manager, but she was no help, also called the Corporate office to no avail.

Free parking. Free happy hour 5 – 7. Free fitness room. Free breakfast. Whirlpool in the room. Awesome.
