John Hine Mazda

I am writing my review for John Hine Mazda in mission valley. I took my wife to purchase a used Nissan Altima but when installing the alarm system the seat broke, they sent it in for repairs but got mixed up on who was going pay for the repairs Nissan or Mazda because it was going to be over $ 2,000. It was supposed to be fixed in a couple of days but turned out to be 6 instead. We were disappointed but Carl (who was the salesman) and Eladio really turned a bad situation into a pleasant experience. We really appreciate the time and effort these 2 gentlemen put in. Thank you Carl and Eladio for being there for us!

I just want to say that Carl Johnson was extremely helpful friendly and absolutely wonderful I lease a Mazda Cx3 on the 17^th and everybody here at Mazda has been very very nice and there’s no pushy salespeople so if anybody wants to go buy a car come to John Hine Mazda in Mission Valley thank you.

We bought the CX-​5 2016.5 Touring at Hine in February. Steven C. and Andre M. were so kind to help us making our purchase as easiest as it could be. Buying a car is like going to the dentist sometimes but it Steven got everything straighten out from the beginning. We both worked out with the price on a particular CX-​5 online.
On the day we showed up to make the purchase, Steven was not there but Andre was also so kind to assist us. There was a recall on the CX-​5 at that time but they got everything done by the time we arrived at the dealer. I can tell you that both Steven and Andre were very easy to deal with and they are knowledgeable. We took the test drive via different routes as Andre recommended, both local and freeway. Andre explained in details on many features of the vehicle, before, during the test drive, and after the purchase. The young lady (Sorry I forgot the name) in finance department was also easy to work with, no sale pressure there. We were in and out the dealer within 2 hours.
I would highly recommend Hine when you look for a Mazda in San Diego. You will not be disappointed!

I walked onto the lot having never driven a Mazda but knowing the CX-​5 had rated well. I was considering purchasing an SUV though I needed to drive a whole slew of cars to get an idea of what each brand had to offer. I met with Gilbert who was happy to let me test drive a range of vehicles. He answered any questions I had but didn’t push me to purchase a car that day. When asked about leasing prices and what they could offer the rates were good so I took his card and left.
A few weeks later I had decided the Mazda CX-​5 is what I wanted and wanted to purchase. I called up Gilbert and let him know I was coming by. Arriving at the dealership he started running around pulling cars for me to see and sit in. We negotiated a great price.
After some experiences I have had with other dealerships where they did a hard sell (Making it impossible to leave, «How about this car, or that one?» Acting desperate, getting their manager, «Are you sure we can’t do anything for you today» «I’m one car away from my monthly sales record»). I was happy to find a place without any of that and give my business to Gilbert. Ask for him.

I don’t think I have ever been so unimpressed and quite frankly, insulted, during a (potential) buying experience. Having been in sales for 6+ years, and having managed a team of 30 sales reps in the past, I have a pretty good idea about what «right» looks like when working with a potential customer. That said, the second I met the sales rep (whose name I don’t even know because he never told me), I knew things were going downhill fast.
After I introduced myself, I told him what I was looking for– the CX5. Not a question was asked about myself, what I’m looking for in a car, why I want that car, etc. He didn’t ask me my driving habits, what specific features I was interested in… just took me to see one on the outside (didn’t even bring the keys so I could look at the features inside). I looked at the car, which he did not offer to let me test drive, and I told him I wanted a quote. He then awkwardly tried to use my name once (so Ale… adjfk…what do you do for work?). And that was the extent of our conversation. We went back inside and directly to the computer, where he did not speak to me for 5 minutes while he typed in some information.
I told him I have a 4-​year old car that just had a brand new engine put in it, and that I would want to see what the trade in value is. It is fully paid off, and I explicitly stated I did NOT want to use the trade in value to go towards LEASING the car… I just wanted to see the value and weigh my options. He asked me how much I wanted to get for the car– I said I would like to know what he’s willing to offer, then we can talk numbers. He said he doesn’t like to work that way — if I could throw out a number, what would my ideal value be. I told him, again, that I would like to know the value they are going to offer me before I pigeon-​hole myself. He laughed, and asked again what value I was hoping for. I half-​jokingly told him that I am also in sales, know exactly what he’s doing, and that I am not going to give him a number. He rolled his eyes and said I have no idea what he’s doing, but that he’s trying to go above and beyond what I want so he can take good care of me. HA. After I declined again, he went back to his managers office, where he spend THIRTY minutes drawing up a quote for a lease.
I had mentioned I wanted a 15,000 mile a year lease… did not say how much I wanted to put down (but that I did not want to apply my trade in towards that), how many months, what features were important… he did not ask any clarifying questions.
When he finally came back, he told me the trade in value… to which I responded that another dealership had offered me $ 5,000 more (which was true). He laughed, said they were just going to tack on money elsewhere so it’s all even, and that I wouldn’t be able to get more for it. He then gave me the quote for a car…12,000 miles (not 15,000), and applied the total of my trade in towards it. When I told him I did not want to apply my trade in value and needed 15,000 miles, he said «oh, sorry», then did not offer to draw a new one up. He folded all of the paperwork, then stayed silent. At that point I knew it was a lost cause, so I swiftly left the building.
I called the manager after to let him know about my experience– the receptionist would not give me his email address, so I left a voicemail. The internet sales manager called to apologize and said he would help… haven’t had a chance to talk to him yet, but we’ll see how that conversation goes. Hopefully he can turn this 1 star experience to a 5! Stay tuned…

I just bought a 2016 Mazda touring and I’m in love with it! I had a great experience buying my first car, Jose Soto was a huge help in picking out the right car for me that was both affordable and dependable. I could not be happier with my choice to purchase at Hine!

This is my first «negative» review ever. I would not recommend you take your car here. This was not case a few years ago. But it is now…
I bought two used cars in the spring of last year. My car — 2007 mazdaspeed3, ran great and I did take it here to replace a leaking transmission seal. Very fair and good. However when I mentioned tires (October 2015I was: misquoted, mislead, and not followed up with properly. One of their service representatives didn’t even remember who I was after I had gone there 3 days ago and we had follow up phone conversations. Kind of sad for a customer service oriented business. Let’s move on.
Today, is another perfect example of how they have fallen far from their previous maintenance excellence. I took my wife’s car in 2010 Mazda CX-​7 for an oil change/​tire rotation. Again, not unreasonably priced and completed in a timely manner. But they reported my engine serpentine belt was badly damaged and needs to be replaced asap! Ok, so when I ask for them to email me a quote… nothing. I wait until Wednesday to call, the service rep I worked with on Sat sent my quote to the wrong person! Furthmore the estimate I was given in person didn’t match the estimate I was given over the phone! THEN when I scheduled an appointment that worked with my wife’s schedule (and was given a slight attitude when asked if it would work with her schedule) they in fact booked the date a week after the agreed upon time!
I’m done giving my business to a place that doesn’t remember me, doesn’t follow up properly, and is unorganized. Michael Bolick was what made this place great, so sad he is gone and so far this place has fallen.
****update. This place I believe has had a bit of turnover so manage your expectations with the fact that some of the service reps are newer. I will continue to take both my cars here knowing the maintenance /​service team really does work hard to fix cars without gouging you on the price.

Great experience there. No pressure to buy. Went in one day and came back the next to purchase a car.

I’m giving John Hine four stars because I honestly had a great experience when I bought my Mazda 3 back in October. The sales rep was very helpful, answered all my questions and didn’t pressure me into anything. I love my Zola and have even referred friends here.
What I can say is the service sucks! I was considering giving them three stars because the service is so terrible but I don’t want to take away from anyone actually thinking about purchasing a car at John Hine.
The wait times are absurd. I’m sure they are overpriced but the service I was having done was time sensitive so I figured they would get the parts much sooner than another repair shop. If you need your car serviced, especially if it’s major, go elsewhere.
On the other hand, if you’re looking to purchase, I would recommend. Also, look at the inventory online first, so you have an idea on what you’re coming to purchase.

Thank you Alex Raynoso! I was looking to upgrade my 2001 Mazda and did my research that the CX-​5 was going to be my car. Alex contacted me — was professional, knowledgeable and I think kind — which was important for a single dad, just trying to get by. He’s young so I did not think he would be able to answer the questions I had — but he jump on it and knew his stuff. Sales is Sales, it’s not easy, but the people who understand and do it best understand easy situation as it drops into their sales floor, and Alex handle the transaction like a champ. he was very transparent and at no time did I feel I was getting the all to typical «Car Sales Pitch». Could I say getting a new car sold to me was FUN — no, but I left with a big smile on my face.

I worked with the team at John Hine today on trading in my old car and leasing a new Mazda 3. Alex Reynoso was the sales person helping me from start to finish in the whole process and I only have amazing things to say about him. He really listened to my situation with my trade in and at no time did I feel any pressure at all from him, he was truly a pleasure to work with. I’m extremely pleased with my entire experience at John Hine and will definitely highly recommend them to anyone looking for a new Mazda or used vehicle.

Recently bought a vehicle through their internet sales department. Highly recommend the no haggling process. They honored the discounted Price although I used another financial company. Alex Reynoso provided great customer service. He even delivered the car to our house saving us the time the next day.

I’ve been in search of a used car that suits my needs for the past few weeks now, and scoured the Internet to find something. After days of driving all around San Diego county looking at different cars, I came across a Suzuki SX4 listed on Autotrader. It had a single, blurry, photograph but upon doing some research I decided to give John Hine Mazda a call for some more details. I spoke with Michael T. on the phone, who mentioned that the car was still in service and hadn’t even been put in the lot yet, but because I was the first to call, he’d have me be the first to drive it in a couple of days.
When I went to JHM to test drive the car, it was still in service, but they pulled it out for me to test it out anyway. The car was… filthy. There’s not really another word to describe it. The floors were covered in leaves and the dash had (what seemed to be) a permanent layer of dust.
Fortunately for me, the car drove like a dream.
I came back the next day ready to make an offer, but was informed the car may have already sold. Once again, fortunately for me, the person that wanted to buy it was unable to.
The car also came back from detailing looking brand-​new. I honestly couldn’t believe how well they were able to clean it up.
My uncle had come with me so we could take it to get a pre-​purchase inspection at Aero Auto Repair, but he had a dental appointment to run off too. The problem being this: I didn’t have personal car insurance at the time, and therefore couldn’t drive the car myself. Brad, the lovely guy that was helping us out throughout the entire process, was not only there on his day off, but was more than willing to drive me out to get the inspection done.
That’s really going above and beyond.
The whole process from then on was extremely smooth, and everyone at the dealership (especially Brad) was very patient and helpful.
It’s been a few days now and I absolutely love my car. It was well worth the wait.
So would I recommend John Hine Mazda? Absolutely.

I had a positive experience buying a 2015 Mazda 3 at John Hine Mazda last year. I was able to negotiate the price, get a perk thrown in for free (all weather floor mats), and get a good financing plan. I was pretty happy with them, so I came back this time to the Service Department for the $ 400 roof racks for my surfboard. One downside to their Sales Department was the overselling of insurance and protection. No, I don’t need Mexico insurance. No, I don’t need GPS theft protection for an arm and a leg (I’ll take my chances…). But, I did cave a bit when it came to interior protection since they offered me a good deal.
After purchasing my car, I’ve gone back to John Hine about once a month for scheduled maintenance at the Service Department. It’s easy because they email me every month to ask if I’d like to set up an appointment (but they don’t send spam email). For their maintenance, they do a good job with inspecting everything, giving it an excellent car wash, and if you pay the $ 5 extra, vacuuming the inside. A downside to the service is the wait times. It’s not bad, but they’ve had me waiting more than an hour a few times for scheduled maintenance (not repairs). I think the Service Department makes up for the wait with their friendliness and email reminders to come in.
Overall, John Hine practices good customer service. The sales process seems very rapid while the service process will usually make you sit in the waiting room. I would recommend them for anyone interested buying and maintaining in a Mazda!

This review is for the SERVICE dept, as I bought my CX-​5 from a different dealership in SD. The service dept here is top notch. They take the time to get to know the customer, greet AND know them by first name basis. They are efficient with their iPads for a more streamline process. My service adviser was Steven A — so if you have get a chance to work with him, I’d highly recommend it. He was very accommodating with what I needed. I have prepaid maintenance, but he was still able to help me out with some reward points!
I do not opt for the complimentary wash that dealerships offer with service due to the machines that they put the cars thru (the ones you see at the gas stations) because I prefer hand washes to prevent swirl marks. I purchased one of the hand wash/​detail packages and my car came out looking way better than the standalone hand washes around town — sure it was a little more in price, but it was worth it in my opinion. They even had my car parked front and center on display! :)
They have optional text message updates on your car’s status which is awesome. Once my car was completed, I received an email stating it was, and had the option to pay online, again — for a more streamline process. Just a brief conversation with Steven about my car and the completed work, and I was out! 5 stars for JHSD’s service dept!

I bought a 2016.5 Mazda CX 5 Grand Touring this past Sunday. Overall I must say it was as painless an experience as car buying could really be. It was still exhausting and overwhelming for a first time new car buyer, but I had a very positive experience looking back.

I had been saving for quite some time because I knew I didn’t want to take a super huge loan but otherwise I only had a few ideas of what I might want for a new car going in to this whole experience. I went into John Hine for the first time on a Friday morning and Carl was really nice and helpful. He tried to provide me with as much info as he could, but also wasn’t super pushy. I had told him up front that I was looking and thinking about other cars and other dealerships because I wasn’t sure if I wanted a CX 5 and wanted to drive a few options before I made any serious decisions. He called me Saturday and left a general message for check in but again wasn’t pushy or aggressive. I had gone to both Toyota and Honda, the price points for the CRV and RAV 4 were slightly higher than the CX 5, and I overall liked the CX 5 better (and my experience at Toyota was HORRIBLE so just for that I had ruled out the RAV 4).
I went back in on Sunday. I had texted Carl (his personal cell was on the card he gave me) and he came in on his day off! Obviously he didn’t want to lose the sale and he was right because I ended up buying that day, and he ran around working super hard to make it happen.
Overall I know he worked really hard, was helpful and informative. By the end I was on information overload but Carl spent time acquainting me to the car and showing me all of the features.
Now as for the negotiating piece, I am really not sure what to think of it all. Looking at other Unilocal reviews it seemed others got better deals than I did… I bought on the second to last day of the month so everyone basically told me that I was getting the best possible price they could give me and they weren’t really willing to budge past what they initially quoted me.
Per other Unilocal reviews, it seems that negotiating by email/​phone ahead of time is the way to go and others got up to 2500 $ or so off MSRP. I got around 1800 off MSRP and got a 10 year warrenty and the alarm for 2350 rather than around 3k. I realize that I am a single gal going in and I don’t have a ton of experience negotiating, so maybe others will have better luck than I did. Overall, it was a long back and forth process (I am sure a tactic to wear you down) and they literally told me I was getting the employee discounts/​prices and it just didn’t feel that there was anywhere else to go. Maybe I should have left and gone elsewhere, compared prices, but my friend who also has the CX 5 a few years ago got less off than I did, and truecar said the prices I was being offered was really good, so I just went with it. No regrets, great car, overall decent experience, all the folks that I dealt with at Mazda were nice, helpful, and I am happy with my purchase!

Car buying experience in November was easy but the brand new car had a deep two inch scratch on the bumper. They could not fix it that day and we had to send the car up north to our daughter the next day. I asked for touch up paint but the salesman said that wouldn’t look good. He promised to have the dealership fix it during the holidays when the car returned to town but they never called (to be fair, we didn’t call either as we felt it was too much hassle). Bottom line, new cars should not be sold with deep scratches! At least offer some concession.
What is terribly concerning is that we got a call from the dealership this week (4 months post-​sale) asking for another $ 5K deposit because they lost our check (and apparently many more) due to a glitch with the bank. This sounds very fishy to me. My husband called the dealership direct to confirm but I still don’t trust them. How did they not notice before now?
I will not purchase another car from John Hine Mazda due to their fiscal mismanagement and lack of concern for their customers.

Most think it’s weird that I take my car to a dealership for repairs but it’s the customer service and professionalism that keeps me coming back!
Everyone from the receptionist to the service associate is extremely helpful. I appreciate the service associate Robert keeping me updated and he did a great job explaining the situation to someone who knows nothing about cars hahaha
I really appreciate them washing my car and checking the tire pressure before pick up. Thank you to the service team at John Hine for making such a stressful situation bearable

I will give credit to the salesman who reached out to me the next day to apologize that we couldn’t make a deal. A sales manager also reached out to me on Unilocal,but it’s definitely not often that the sales person calls you back even from their personal line.
Sometimes things don’t work out the way you want them to… but I have faith that the next time I reach out to John Hine for my 4^th Mazda, my experience will be much better!
