The name has changed to Hanaya Sushi Café, but the address is still the same. Their chirashi is the cheapest that I’ve come across, and the serving is more than enough for my tumbly to handle. Wouldn’t mind coming back.

The owner might have changed. They used to have all kinds of Korean dishes along with sushi. I like their Chirashi. Service was eh… I went there around 2pm and I was rushed… I don’t know why… I was there with one other person. Never really came by to check up on me. I would go back just because it’s right front of my work and convenient. Price is affordable too.

Meh. I thought all sushi places were supposed to be good in California. this place proved me wrong. It was definitely cheap… I got allot of fish, but the pieces weren’t sliced very well, it didn’t taste that good, and I’m really not a fan of the filler stuff like the imitation crab meat that they put in there… presentation is so-so(granted I got carry-out)… but the service was decently fast at least.

So I’m guessing I’m I’m reviewing this place under its new management. My sister was a patron of Sushi USA in Poway so when the owners took this place, my sister went here too. Tried it out for the first time last week. There was only one lady(the mother) working but she was efficient with cooking the food, bringing us(group of three) our food, and paying attention to us(not bad because we were the only ones there an hour before rush hour). Complimentary edamame for us in the beginning and mochi ice cream at the end =) Brought out on a mini iron skillet, my mom actually enjoyed and finished her grilled salmon entrée earning this place a star on its own. I got a three-item combo: gyoza, spicy crab roll, and sashimi. The spicy crab roll only had five-ish pieces but it was huge. I thought there was a lot of rice in it though, but a lot of the spicy crab was on top of the roll. My biggest gripe was that the sashimi was like zildheam D. said – it was almost frozen, but there were a loooot of pieces. I’d probably like this place more if it wasn’t for the sashimi disappointment –_–

Not the most fresh, my sashimi was almost frozen: / Great service, friendly and prompt service and not expensive. Only wish it was fresher and better quality, their baked rolls are served COLD, baked to me implies warm or hot, disappointing. A decent crunchy roll, nice presentation of food, small place. Just OK. Could be better but have experienced worst.

Everyone, give this place a try. They are the past owners of Sushi USA and just took over this restaurant. If you remember them from the old days, the menu is a little different. It’s more lunch oriented and the prices are actually lower than before. Their fish quality is good and they are a super nice couple. We had the Chirashi, very fresh with salmon, maguro, ebi, tamago, and a few others. We also got a combo for the kids(Chicken teriyaki, gyoza, Shrimp Tempura roll) which is good for the kiddos. Of note, it’s a Korean owned sushi restaurant, as most in San Diego are.

This place is under NEWMANAGEMENT and it’s pretty damn good, b*tches. They used to be located in Poway as Sushi USA but has moved down here recently. I don’t know what kind of crap you guys were eating before, but with the new owners and their style of sushi making, the taste explosion you will experience in your mouth is second to none. The rolls are quite large, fresh, delicious, and pretty amazingly priced. Your rolls also come with a side of fresh fruit as well as edamame. The new business consists of wife, husband, and daughter team. They’re absolutely sweet and very generous with everything they give. And you want to know something amazing? The spicy tuna roll is actually spicy, unlike most places.

Standard Japanese business park restaurant. Various bento boxes are all pretty good. I wouldn’t go here if it wasn’t so convenient but it does satisfy my cravings for Japanese food when I’m at work.

Went to eat here last night and realized new owners that I have known for a long time. Last place they had was Sushi USA. The sushi was awesome and the prices were great! Need to try this one out! They opened it about a week ago.

Another trend I could not reverse. Sadly, the food in this place is really not that good. The fish is soggy and does not taste that fresh and yet, I find myself ordering the Dragon Rolls over and over again. I do love to torture myself. Still, it is a convenient 5 minute walk. Makes me go and get some sun before gobbling down sub-par Japanese sushi. At least they don’t use MSG(or at least I think so) because I don’t recall ever getting sleepy after a meal from this place. Until a new sushi place opens up that is just as convenient, I will continue to get my sushi fix from Hanaya(sigh).

Don’t really have much choice for sushi as far as walking distance from work. As far as sushi, it’s a little over-priced for slightly sub-par sushi. This place is Korean-owned and run so where they actually shine is in Korean dishes — kimchi fried rice, etc. It’s not a terrible place, but there are certainly better.

As a soldier in the Sorrento Valley cubicle robot army, I am forced to find my noon time nourishment within a 30 minute lunch radius. So, to make a short story even shorter, Hanaya Sushi is within this(sad) radius. I must agree with the popular Unilocal opinion about Hanaya Sushi. This place is one step up from doo doo on a stick. It’s not all bad though — at least you have a cool stick to take home after eating the doo doo. Do you know how many things I can do with a stick? Just off the top of my head, I can break it in half and now I have two sticks. Hmmmmm so maybe if I need sticks I’ll go to Hanaya Sushi. However, if it’s sushi food that floats your boat, my suggestion is to tell all your pirate friends to steer their ships away from Hanaya Sushi. Eh, you might as well go ahead and tell your non-pirate friends as well. P. S. They label themselves as a Japanese«fusion» restaurant, but the only fusion I could see is that they add a salad to their meals. Whoa, stop the presses!!! Salad with your sushi??? This is an unberievable invention that just pushes the limits of culinary art. I should tell my mechanic to include a salad with all his oil changes so he can be a «fusion» auto repair shop. Fusion Auto Repair Shop would be my stripper name… it would also be my street basketball nickname.

The sole reason I even step into this place is because the location is convenient and their kimchi fried rice is acceptable when desperate for something Korean. That’s pretty much the only dish I get when I go to this joint. I have not tried any rolls or «sushi,» nor will I ever want to. I have no illusion about what this place is, a quickie joint in a convenient location run by friendly people with perhaps good intentions but definitely with poor execution who are just trying to make a living. Nothin more, nothin less. So be it…

Since this place has changed owners several years ago, it’s only fair that I update my review. The food has gotten a lot better, the prices are fair and the sushi is good. They can get busy during the lunch rush and forgot my order a few times. The owner is very nice and apologetic but since she’s the only sushi chef, there can be some orders that could get missed. All n all, it’s a good place if you’re looking for a quick meal.

Hiiiiiyaaaa! I just did a karate chop on Hanaya because their food offended me. If the ramen is any indication of the restaurant’s other offerings, then I’d say avoid this place. Eating my meal made me think that Hanaya doesn’t take time or consideration on the preparation of ramen. They think I can be fooled by the dressing up over the counter ‘Top Ramen’ with some lemon grass and a floating egg. The ramen’s broth was really watery, no zest, no hint of puckering saltiness — very substandard. The floating eggs in the broth didn’t help a bit. Along with the ramen, Hanaya gave me some complimentary California rolls, which were relatively better than the ramen noodles I ordered. If it wasn’t for those Cali rolls, I think I would’ve graded Hanaya a paltry one star.

I went here with 2 co-workers at lunch. I ordered a chicken and tempura lunch box. It was bad. The chicken was fatty scrap meat. The tempura might have been more than 24 hours old. The edamame was inedible. The salad was wilted and set in a pool of dressing. The California rolls were not fresh. I’ll echo another Unilocaler’s comment that the miso soup tastes like dirty dish water. A co-worker got chicken curry. He couldn’t eat it. Bad food.

How is it that the only person who got it right for this restaurant was Vicky L??? A coworker and I went here expecting mediocre sushi after reading the reviews. Normally we wouldn’t even consider sushi in Mira Mesa, but we figured with the reviews of our fellow Unilocalers, we would at least be able to find something edible. This is the worst food I have EVER had. AVOIDATALLCOSTS!!! We were actually afraid that we would leave, only to find that we had received a heaping dosage of food poisoning. The tempura shrimp roll wasn’t crunchy, but chewy, as if it had been fried and then set in a refrigerator. The albacore on top of the albacore roll was a dark brownish pink color… and almost looked like jerky. And our dragon roll, we each ate one piece and then refused to give it another moment. I had ONE cube of tofu in my miso soup, while she didn’t even get any. How can this even be considered decent food? We each got a Sapporo with our meals(it is Friday for goodness sake) and we had to reach over the counter to grab the bottle opener and open them ourselves… and they were barely chilled. That was the best part of our meal. Luke warm Japanese beer. Pathetic. I actually had to gargle my beer to try to get the taste of this«food» out of my mouth. Seriously, if I could give negative stars, I would.

How do you describe this place in 10 words or less? Here: «The Diet Coke was the best part of my meal.» This place is AWFUL! I work just around the corner from here and was craving sushi for lunch, so I thought I’d give it a whirl. I ordered some shrimp tempura and a crunchy roll(ok so I like tempura…) and a soda, and I was a little surprised when the total was $ 17! Yeah, $ 17. I get my food, sit down, and take a bite of my shrimp tempura, which I was anticipating being hot and crunchy. Well, it was a bit like taking a drink of milk when you were expecting soda. It was cold, limp, completely tasteless and almost shockingly inedible. I moved on to the roll. To my «luck,» the same tempura was in my roll, which I would use the same adjectives to describe this as I did the shrimp tempura. I moved on to the miso soup. Well, if by miso soup, they actually meant water with a dose of «god knows what,» mixed with a little dab of «what the heck are these chunks,» that is what it was. It was horrid. One taste, and I went to throw out my $ 17 meal and left. If you feel like sushi in Mira Mesa, go down Mira Mesa Blvd. to some of the other places. This one is a disgrace and a disappointment.

Lunch here isn’t bad, as it is the only place on its street corner with decent décor and reasonable food. Upon spotting your slanty eyes, the cashier may ask if you are Japanese, and even if you aren’t you’ll still get good service. Table service if you’re sitting outside and can’t hear the cashier call your order? Works for our hero. This place pays surprising attention to the small details: sesame and seaweed strips sprinkled on top of your yaki soba, higher grade pickled ginger when you’re not just eating sushi, and both wasabi and hot sauce with your meals. PROS: — No minimum purchase to use credit or debit. — Clean and nicely decorated interior. — Fast table service and minimal line ups at lunch. CONS: — So-so sushi.
