Alterra Pest Control

I am giving Alterra Pest Control 2 stars because: I am happy with their service, so far. We are new to their service; they have been out to us 2X. I am terribly unhappy, as they have been bought out by Terminix. I started out with my other service of 9 years with a small, Mom/​Pop service and within a year, it was bought out by Terminix, raised their prices and continually raised their prices considerably every year since. When the Alterra salesperson came by and offered their service at a reduced price, I said, if I do this you’re are just going to be bought out by a larger company and raise your prices the next year – he assured me that Alterra has been in business for years and wouldn’t do that – and so here I am again. Anticipating that when my year contract is up, Alterra, now Terminix will raise their prices substantionately. I will then go with another pest control company and start all over again.

Hi my name is Francesca, and we love this company we have been with them since June 2015. Did we have more spiders than before after they came, yes. But after calling Alterra, they rescheduled and came out again. The gentleman who’s name is Jeff, is amazing. He explained how the process works, and that it takes sometimes several times for them to come out and get rid of the problem. And Jeff was correct, we no longer have issues with black or brown widows nor other insects including fleas. They always call several days prior before showing up, to let you know if you can secure the animals on the day of service. Jeff always knocks on the door to let us know he is here. He is awesome, and we thank him for taking the time to explain the process. That’s why I’m giving Alterra 5 stars for the excellent service they provide to us. Absolutely love Jeff, he is awesome. Manuel F was out at the house this morning taking care of a new invasion of pesky drain flies. He treated the area and gave me some great tips to help avoid them from coming back. Manuel was very polite and very helpful and have had a great experience with my Alterra maintenance service.

I’ve been paying to have my black & brown widow spiders exterminated by Alterra. I have found that I have more spiders than when we started the service over a year ago. When the route manager came to the door I explained to him that the spider problem is bigger than when I started the service. He went on to tell me that some that half of his customers say they haven’t seen any spiders and the other half say that the problem still exists. When I called to cancel I was promptly put on hold for 7 minutes then hung up on. When I was on hold a message suggested the I read their core values on their mission statement. It says nothing about providing a quality product. It also says it is their mission to «responsibly protect your family and the environment». I really think they should reevaluate their mission. This service is horrible at best.

My father was in town, he speaks little english and signed up with Alterra based on that he understood it cost $ 69 onetime only. I know how sales people work and terms used are hard to interpret even for me who’s been here 13 years. My father is a trustworthy person and feels he was lured into a deal that was presented better than it is in reality.
We have two properties and he signed up for both. Anyhow, after reading the contract i quickly realized its a contract for one year. We have had some brown widows in the area but not anything noticeable over the three years i have lived in my house, so based on the contract signed I decided to try it out to see if it would at least get completely rid of spiders.
However, I have more brown widows now after starting this service than I’ve ever had before. I decided to call and cancel and was informed that if we want to cancel now i’ts $ 130 per contract (as we apparently got a initial discount of $ 130) or we can wait until the annual contract is due which will cost $ 200. Either way, the spiders seem to be there. Just not a fan of paying for a service that is not helping an issue but rather increasing the amount of brown widows.

I don’t agree with the negative posts. We have had Alterra since moving here last year. We have had no problems at all. I did call in between quarterlies and left a message and some one came out a couple days later. At our previous residence in Hawaii we had another company so we wanted to make sure we were covered. Alterra was the first to come out and we have had no reason to change, we met the one year and we are still happy.
Today we had service and Sal was our technician. Great guy and fantastic customer service. Made us feel like we were back in Hawaii with that friendliness and caring.

Only recommendation to Alterra is a regular technician assigned to make things more personal. THANK YOU.

OK my third review on this company and now I have to bump them down one star. My daughter was the only one home when the technician arrived. It’s difficult to read on the receipt they left behind, but his name might be Matthew or Nathan. There’s another name which may be his last name or the name of another individual. In any case its illegible, but starts with an ‘S’.
The guy (s) left a gate open which was clearly closed when they arrived. Subsequently one of my dogs went missing and my daughter had to run all over the neighborhood looking for her. Thankfully she was eventually found unharmed, but it made my daughter late for work. Is it really that hard to close a gate behind you when you walk through it? Come on guys, you can do better than this.

They came to my door and sold me on their service. I than dropped a reputable pest control company for this company, which was a mistake. Their product does not do the job of controlling pests, plus their customer service is awful !! To request a service, I had to leave a voice message and hope they call me back, which is not guaranteed. And when and if they do, they give you run around and they lie!
Stay away from them.

I am so disappointed in this company. I have tried calling now for 2 hours and I only get the answering message telling me that the office hours are 9 – 5 Monday through Friday. Hmm I started calling at 1:00 every 30 minutes! They only take your money but are not available to connect with them. I only get a brief email that they are going to service my yard THE DAY BEFORE!!! If you are out of town — too bad you get a note they they came by and take your $ 105.00 for the service! If you don’t check you email the day before well you don’t know they are coming. You can’t even respond to the email the send you!!! Poor communication and poor customer service. Oh I know I will get a response from the business Manager Darren, I already tried to send him an email! Wished I had looked this company up on Unilocal prior to signing up!

Do not get sucked into this service. They do not answer their phone and do not call before coming as they said they would. A guy showed up on Monday over Labor Day, we had guests and so he did the front yard and said he would return in a few days, this never happened.
Too much money and too little service.

If there’s one thing I really dislike, it’s shady sales tactics. A young man came to our door and spoke with my husband, and I listened to the pitch. He made it sound like the entire year’s service would be $ 89, charged once, with the initial service being $ 1. Usually, I tell solicitors to take a hike (and we also have a NO Solicitors sign, which they ignored), but for some reason my husband listened b/​c we do have some wasps. We agreed to try them out, and while I didn’t notice a difference in other bugs, I suppose the wasps were fewer bc they knocked down the nests. However, I didn’t realize that the actual contract (which locks you in for a year) charges $ 89 per QUARTER, and while the first service is $ 1, there are still 4 other services, while the sales guy made it sound like there were only 4. So there are actually 5 services in a «quarterly service.» And yes, they charge you for each service. They need to talk to their sales guys to make sure they are not misrepresenting the company’s services just to get a sale. They also charge an early termination fee, so even if we had discovered the truth after the first quarter, we would be charged if we cancelled. Had they been more honest and up front, we might have continued our services b/​c the bug issue was slightly better. It just wasn’t a HUGE difference.
Also, when I called to discontinue, I had two different people tell me that our service was cancelled and they would remove the last charge of $ 89. This removal never happened, I still received bills, and only the last person I talked to explained that I had to pay that last $ 89 (the others charged automatically until the credit card expired) b/​c the year was not up yet. He had no record of my conversations with the other two people, who apparently were incompetent or just dishonest. Not a well-​organized business, and the sales people are not transparent.

Horrible!!! Do not use this company. I have lived in my house for 9 years snd have not had one ant or spider until I hired this company. I used a local pest control company until this company showed up and sold me in their service.
When I say we have spiders I dont mean tiny spiders here or there, they are huge and they are all over my house.
We came home this weekend to a kitchen full if ants. They just sprayed our house 3 weeks ago. DONE!!! I have now hired the company I used before back.

I have had exact same experience as others. False claims from salesman about spiders. As many or more spiders now. Ant invasions INSIDE my house now. They promised to show up to service next day but no showed. Didn’t even call to let me know they were not coming, meanwhile ants enjoying my kitchen and pantry.
Website contact page isn’t loading, nor when you click on «schedule service call» does it work. Recorder on main phone not picked up, no emergency contact number given, never gave me contact info of service person that was supposed to show up. I could go on.
I will be happy to enter class action if they do not let me out immediately or make things right. I have been duped and invaded, and robbed of good money for a service that hasn’t lived up to the promises. For those reasons I would not recommend Alterra.
I will let you all know how they handle this situation.

My story is similar to all of the others here. I was duped into signing up by one of the salespeople that came to my door. I signed up for a year of service because the spiders in my area started to get really bad for some reason. Now, after one year of their absolutely horrible service, the spiders are just as bad, if not worse. Previous to Alterra, I had Ortho and they did such a good job that I canceled because my house was pretty much pest free.
I would probably forgive Alterra for their horrible service, if they ever answered their phone or listened to my messages telling them to cancel my service! I have fulfilled the year of service and yet they keep charging me and ignoring my calls to cancel. I am now forced to call my bank so that they will put a stop to their charges. I also called my lawyer and he said that it might be worth looking into filing a class-​action lawsuit if we can find many others who have had this same experience. I don’t care how much money I lose, I’m really thinking about it. I can definitely afford to drag this out in court.
BOTTOM LINE: DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE AS I AND ALL THE OTHERS HERE HAVE MADE. AVOID THIS DISREPUTABLE COMPANY AND SAVE YOURSELF THE MONEY AND HASSLE!

We enrolled after enthusiastic salesman convinced us to give them a try. Said several of our neighbors had signed up and we will likely see an increase in our insect level if we don’t spray too. Despite hating scare tactics, we are in a more rural area and have a lot of spiders so decided to give them a try.
Well, it doesn’t. Zero change in spider/​insect activity. Zero. A week after they sprayed the second time we were working in the backyard and killed close to 20 spiders. I am convinced they are spraying water. All the places they said they spray — fresh webs.
So disappointing. Now we get the pleasure of paying the $ 150 early termination fee since we did not use them a full year. I understand being charged this if they are doing a good job and you decide to cancel but to have to pay this because their job is not what they promised… insult to injury.
Beware!

I had an issue with Alterra, but the management team reached out to me and addressed all my concerns. I appreciate it, I am a happy customer now.

I’ve been with Alterra for 3 months now, the service has been great. I used to be with Dewey’s but they didn’t cover all of the same insects and warranties on the agricultural side of things. I’ve been very impressed with their promptness and willingness to come back out as soon as I have issues with the spiders coming back on my fence and patio chairs.

I have had more bugs and more insect problems now with them. I called during business hours last week and today Wed. Of the following week. No one has tried to contact me. I would go with a more reputable company that has the capability of picking up the phone during business hours. Furthermore has ability to return a phone call the following week. Let’s hope this heightens your awareness.

Just spoke to James about my account, he said your account was cancelled by someone? He did not know who cancelled the account but said they tried to call back but our phone was disconnected, strange same number for over 13 years… Anyway they charged me $ 160 for canceling early even though I did not. But think about it people, they make more from so called cancellations than spraying for bugs, wow geniuses! Well just tried to call James back from our connected home phone as well as a working cell phone and guess what, no answer on their part. Never did get to discuss spiders which was the purpose of my original call, sounds spooky to me and it’s not even close to Halloween!

The sales rep who came to my door were extremely friendly and helpful. The service was absolutely stunning the next day. I’m very satisfied with Alterra.
