A Better Tree Service

Jeff came out to look at a large eucalyptus tree in our backyard that had turned golden within a matter of weeks. Jeff assessed our tree and advised it was definitely drought stressed, and was pretty far gone. But, with his knowledge and expertise he wanted to take steps to still try and save the tree and gave us a soaker hose to help aid in the process of saving this 60+ year old eucalyptus. I believe that says a lot, and he is not just one to want to go around cutting down trees.
He took the time to explain the process of tree life, which is incredible for someone so busy to take the time to do. We have 11 trees in our backyard alone, plus 3 fruit trees in the front yard. He took the time to go around and explain the name of each tree and recommend what each needed (or did not need).
I had called five other tree services, from which I never received a call back from. I called A Better Tree Service and Jeff was booked out a couple of weeks. However, after the receptionist relayed our message about our urgency to save our tree Jeff called back and squeezed us in to his schedule for a next-​day appointment! My husband and I highly recommend Jeff and A Better Tree Service. He is very knowledgeable and friendly.

Jeff came out to my house in Carmichael to provide some advice regarding my backyard trees. He spent around an hour walking around the property with me providing excellent advice and information the entire time. At the end of his consultation, he wrote out a «prescription» for what I needed to do next. I’m looking forward to his follow-​up visit in the fall to discuss trimming and pruning. The Blue Spruce tree in my front yard died thanks to the drought, so I contacted 3 tree services for estimates on removing the tree and some other stumps in the yard. I contacted A Better Tree Company and two other companies on ⁶⁄₁₂. The first company came out the day I called and gave me a reasonable estimate, the second came out that Saturday with another reasonable estimate. When I talked with this company they couldn’t fit me in for an estimate until ⁶⁄₂₂. I talked to Jeff on the phone after he looked at my tree and he told me that I would get my estimate by the end of the business day. I called them this afternoon to follow up and the lady I talked to on the phone sounded like the estimate hadn’t even been written up yet, but she’d call me as soon as it was sent. It is now Wednesday at 7pm and I still have yet to receive an email with my estimate to remove the tree. The tree is so dry that I am afraid that it could become a fire hazard with the 4^th of July only a week and a half away since it is so close to the house. Jeff was really nice and polite on the phone (hence the 2 stars), but I guess if you aren’t interested in re-​landscaping at the same time then you aren’t worth this company’s time. I’ll be contacting the first tree service that gave me a reasonable estimate that also included some roots from a previous tree I hadn’t noticed before in the morning to schedule them to remove the tree.

I decided to get an expert opinion from an arborist to help resolve a friendly disagreement with a neighbor over trimming a tree that had branches coming onto my property.

My neighbor was convinced a permit was required for pruning because the tree was an oak. I wasn’t sure. I wanted to get a professional opinion from an arborist. I called A Better Tree Service for a consultation after seeing a lot of positive Unilocal reviews.

They were able to fit me into their schedule for the day.

Jeff came out and looked at the tree and as a certified arborist offered his opinion on the situation. He was very knowledgeable and personable and answered all the questions my neighbor and I had. Jeff also made suggestions to help us manage future growth.

The price for consultation was worth every penny.

Glad I had Jeff come out to consult on this situation. The next time I need an arborist Jeff will definitely be the first one I call. Five stars.

Professional and knowledgeable, the owner, Jeff, knows his stuff! I had a 30 ft mulberry that needed to come out. The crew was courteous, efficient, and did exactly as I asked with the wood and chippings. A Better was recommended to me by good friends and I would recommend them to other friends and family, as well. I will be calling them again to trim fruit trees.

We had A Better Tree Service today. They removed two trees and trimmed two trees. They did an excellent job from beginning to end. They took great care in trimming our Chinese Hackberry and we were very pleased with the results. We will use them again and we highly recommend them.

Jeff came out to look at a pine tree that was looking stressed. He really knows his stuff when it come to trees and plants, I was very impressed. He ended up giving me information about almost every tree in the yard. Last guy I had out wanted to take the tree out, I’m so glad we called Jeff. I’d definitely go with his tree service and expertise next time we have a problem.

My experience with A Better Tree Service started with a meeting with Jeff to talk about how to save/​manage the front yard tree. Jeff explained in great detail what needed to be done to keep the tree healthy and safe. Two days later I had an estimate that was very reasonable for the amount of work needed, One day after that Michele had us on their schedule. While I did not see the crew that did the work, when I saw the result I was completely satisfied. The tree looks beautiful, and the area was cleaned. I will be calling on A Better Tree Service in the future for any and all of my tree management needs. There are lots of choices in our area, but do yourself a favor before hiring someone else, give A Better Tree Service the opportunity to bid.

Jeff was courteous and very knowledgeable. He reviewed all the trees in our yard and made suggestions about how to take care of them more effectively and best of all, he didn’t try to sell us expensive tree service!

We had an 18 foot dead liquid amber tree in our backyard and I called A Better Tree Service because of the amazing reviews on here and because I knew Jeff from a previous job. Jeff came out to do a free estimate and he spent an hour with me reviewing my yard going over the importance of hiring a business that can show proof of liability and insurance and reinforcing the importance of the safety of his men. He is so personable and professional!
The men showed up at 8 and finished at 1145. Due to the size of the tree and that it was dead, there was a little collateral damage to our fence which they fixed right on the spot!!! Wow!!! All do the men were professional, efficient and kind. They did an amazing job from start to finish, and my yard actually looks cleaner then when they started. ;) Thank you !!

This business never showed up for their first appointment for a simple bid. Not only that they had set up a 2 hour time frame and they still didn’t bother to call and let me know what was going on! And, this appointment was set up 1 week in advance.
There are other places to get better service, try them!
Edit: Soon after this review was posted, the owner called and posted (see below). It’s his wife/​receptionist who answered my call and made the appointment. Either she failed to tell him about the appointment and didn’t admit it to him, or he knew about it and put a potential more «profitable» estimate in place of mine. Contractors do Google your address to size you up and see what you are worth, I live in a modest and well kept home but I don’t live in the most expensive area either.

I have a very large Modesto ash that is covered in mistletoe and was dropping all its leaves. I called A Better Tree Service to get an expert opinion on that tree and 14 others on the property I just purchased. Jeff came over and spent over an hour checking everything out. He uncovered a significant problem with the large tree in my front yard. A huge branch is unsupported on one side and, should it fail, would fall smack in the middle of my house. It will require a cable support. Jeff gave me a number of recommendations for things I can now do to improve the health of my trees, plants, and shrubs. He has given me a lot of mulch, recommended reference material, and answered numerous questions to coach me through the smaller projects. I look forward to the fall when he’ll come to work on the trees. As mentioned in previous reviews, Jeff has a positive attitude that is infectious. I like his natural approach to nature. If you are in need of a tree specialist I strongly recommend A Better Tree Service.

Great customer service! We were considering purchasing a property, but noticed that some large trees didn’t look so hot. I called a few other arborists about potential fees for trimming/​removal and the ranges were all over the place (and rightly so since they could only go off my description). Based on the Unilocal reviews and their website, I called A Better Tree Service and spoke with Michelle. She was extremely knowledgeable and understood exactly what I was looking for; she recommended that her husband simply stop by the property and take a look at the trees. I was impressed that she offered such service, especially since it wasn’t a property we even owned. She assured me that he could just view the trees from the street (they were all in the front lawn). (The property was vacant, so no worries about disturbing the owners.) That SAME DAY, she called me back with his report. He could easily identify the issues and had recommendations and price options. We used this valuable knowledge in our negotiations with the seller. We didn’t end up getting the property for other reasons (the trees were just the tip of a very expensive iceberg), but I would not hesitate to contact and retain A Better Tree Service. Thanks again!

I have lived at my current address for 20 years and have had my trees trimmed by 5 different arborist’s and I have to say that Jeff knows more about trees than all 5 of the arborist’s combined. Jeff and the crew came out on time and went over with me all the work that was going to be performed and he was there at the end of the day to make sure everything was done to my satisfaction. Its nice to know that I have finally found a tree service professional that I can rely on to do all my future tree trimming.

The right tree properly planted in the right location for the right price. My backyard trees are growing beautifully and will add value and appeal to the yard. «A Better Tree Service» handled tree selection and planting for me. Off to a proper start, I just have to sit back and watch them grow. Completely worth the extra cost to have a professional handle the job in the long run. Would always recommend using a professional arborist for the job.

Great service performed by a certified arborist and crew. Jeff helped me through the decision process of removing a large old tree and the planting of new trees. If you want a crew that knows there stuff hire A Better Tree Service. Jeff was knowledgeable and professional. I was having a large tree removed and he was the only bid that suggested a plan for also treating the roots so they won’t send up shooters later. The crew showed up on time and got the job done in less than 2 hours. They brought a tree chipper and they did a great job cleaning up after themselves! It was fun to watch the process from the guy climbing the tree, chain sawing the limbs and watching the tree turn to mulch. High quality service! Very professional! Great doing business with you!
