Established in 1995.

After working as a medical aesthetician, Shizuka decided to open her own skin care practice which has since evolved into a full day spa.

Shizuka is in high demand as a master facialist and skin care expert. Her artful technique has been singled out by many publications including New York Magazine which has featured her as a «Skin Care Guru.» She has also been seen on CNN, CNBC, Fox News, The Today Show, The Early Show, CBS’s The Doctors, and E!‘s red carpet special leading up to the Primetime Emmy Awards as the creator of the Geisha Facial, a skin care treatment that harnesses the ancient Japanese tradition of softening and brightening the skin with nightingale droppings.

Shizuka is a very nice day spa.
It is clean, relaxing, and the girls working are quite pleasant and accommodating. Shizuka is soft spoken, attentive, and has flawless skin — she must know what she’s doing.
I went in for the infrared sauna which I used for an hour, rinsed in the high-​tech shower, slipped in a kimono-​like bathrobe and comfy slippers, and touched up in the makeup room before heading back out in chilly, hustling-​bustling NYC streets.
I intend to frequent Shizuka regularly for the infrared sauna, which is kind of like therapy for me and is supposed to be health-​inducing. I think the key to having a good experience at Shizuka is regarding it as more kind of a therapeutic sanctuary than a medical spa.
But that’s just my humble opinion.

I have been having facials for years, but this was my first visit to this salon and it will not be my last. The receptionist was friendly and I found the facility very clean and tastefully furnished. The lovely surroundings and tranquil atmosphere make it a wonderful place for a facial. I left feeling relaxed and pampered. The esthetictian was quite good, but I wish her English was better so she could explain the different lotions she was using.

I hate to give low reviews. Went for a deep-​tissue massage. Didn’t enjoy my experience.
The massage was nowhere near deep tissue pressure, even after requests for increased pressure. The flow of the massage itself and some of the techniques used were a bit odd. First massage I’ve had where I couldn’t wait for it to end. Perhaps the masseuse was inexperienced, which was surprising.
Dressing stalls were tiny, covered by a curtain. The sauna lacked heat — fits 2 people, snugly. The steam stall was ok — fits 1 person. I was surprised these are offered at an additional cost over the massage. The inside spa lounge was small, cozy, simple and the snacks extremely modest.
A small area with two chairs for hair and makeup needs had scarce amenities and strangely enough, an unsealed, presumably communal hair brush and comb.
The high-​end price point just wasn’t commensurate with the spa experience.

I was given a «spa day» as a gift from a friend. I was excited to be able to spend a day relaxing and being pampered in the middle of a long winter. Walking into Shizuka was a little strange as its on the 6th floor of a non-​descript office building in midtown. You have to check in with a somewhat surly security guard in the lobby before being allowed up. Once upstairs, the space is fine if not a little cramped. The receptionist was pleasant enough and the robes they give you to change into are nice. I was scheduled for a massage, facial, leg wax and mani/​pedi. The massage was a nice experience and the masseuse seemed to be well versed in her trade. I stayed in the same room for the mediocre facial. The facialist seemed to be a little «green» and didn’t do a great job — I actually ended up breaking out the next day which has never happened to me before. They then told me I had to go to another room for the wax. To go from a nice, dimly lit «spa» room into the very harsh glare of the waxing suite jolted me out of my relaxed state almost immediately. The waxing was… fine. The technician (who also ended up doing my mani/​pedi) was nice but the wax not only left patches of hair on my leg but she left behind a lot of residue as well. I asked her to tweeze the smaller hairs and she said they were too short. I’ve never been given that response before but I let it go and resigned myself to having to do it myself when I got home. The mani/​pedi experience was the worst of the bunch. I was the only person in the spa on what should have been a busy day so I wasn’t sure why I was being rushed. She cut my nails too short, left my cuticles ragged and some untrimmed and didn’t even file my nails properly. When I got home not only did I have to tweeze my legs, I also had to refile my toe nails since they were so uneven and sharp
In places. The «spa pedicure» itself was a bit of a joke. Any pedicure that takes less then 15 minutes can’t be good. All in all, not a great experience and not a place that I will go back to. There are a ton of spas similar to this in midtown that are less expensive, have a better atmosphere and better service all around. I’m sorry that my friend wasted her money with this gift certificate!

I have never received such good customer service, especially when it comes to spas in Manhattan. I got the Geisha Facial and it was a very pleasant experience. The aesthetician was clearly very knowledgeable and so is the rest of the staff. A couple of days after my facial I had a couple of questions regarding my skincare and not only was the receptionist very helpful and nice, but the owner herself took time out of her busy schedule and went out of her way to meet with me and answer any questions I might have had. They have even followed up with me via email and phone to check up on my progress. I am completely impressed by their high customer service standards. I will definitely be back and recommend it to everyone.

OMG! I had one of the best facials ever!!! Not just any facial, An Anti-​Ageing Photo Facial. I have Rosacea and my skin is super sensitive. My aesthetician Miss. Takumi, has hands of gold. Very soft spoken and delicate. She made me so relaxed. The laser that was used really took the red and broken capillaries out that are associated with Rosacea. Will totally come back and I highly recommend this spa.

What a way to lose customers.
My colleague likes this spa and has had a handful of services performed here so I thought that purchasing a gift certificate for a swedish massage would be a fantastic gift idea for him for the holidays.
Boy was I wrong!
The process to purchase the gift certificate online was simple enough — pretty seamless however when I attempted to check out, the total price jumped upwards of $ 6 from $ 115.00 to about $ 121.00. I contacted the spa and spoke with a very nice receptionist who attempted to convince me that the $ 6.00 charge was NYS sales tax although the verbiage on their site clearly reads: GIFT CERTIFICATE PRICES INCLUDE NEW YORK STATE TAX.
I was then advised that I needed to speak with the owner — Shizuka when she got in this afternoon. To her credit, Shizuka did call me back but guess what?! Instead of eating the $ 6 charge, paying the tax herself and processing my gift certificate, she preferred to attempt to argue the upcharge to me to which I wanted no part. REALLY?! For $ 6, you certainly cannot keep me on the phone.
Bad business practice will get you nowhere. I would be careful with this one folks. This is a matter of principle. I would think that a business owner would welcome BUSINESS not try to fight with potential customers over such a nominal amount. At the end of the day, if you are willing to go to such lenghts as to cast blame on everyone but yourself, it’s clear you’ll definitely cut corners and in my opinion cannot be trusted.
I have no intention of ever using Shizuka’s services.
You may want to think twice before patroning these folks.

Was looking for a manicure/​spa close to my office and went here based on great reviews. I left feeling unimpressed with what I got for the price. Service was professional, but cold, manicure wasn’t that great and left with a grease slick of lotion that wasn’t fully massaged into my hands and nails that chipped less than a day after my mani. I was really hoping to like this place and make it my go-​to since the location was so close to my office but I’ll look elsewhere for better.

This is my go-​to default spa for facials for the last four years. I usually get Gentlewaves as an add-​on to my facial as well which helps after sunburns and has anti-​aging benefits. I’ve been to a lot of spas in the city for facials but none rival this one for cleanliness, a soothing atmosphere (they play relaxing spa music and burn amazing incense/​candles and pay great attention to every detail — like the placement of an orchid or products for you to use after your treatment to get ready to go out into the world again).
This place just has that Japanese-​level of cleanliness and politeness you don’t find at other places. They also listen to you and will customize whether you are getting a facial, a massage, or an additional add-​on treatment. Like sometimes I will be like «pore extract away» and other times I will be like «I need to go out and cannot be too red» and they will adjust the treatment to your needs.
I love the products they use here (Naturopathica and the Shizuka Spa line itself is gentle and effective) and the rooms are private and comfortable. I’ve also become hooked on buying their amazing aromatherapy soy candles they have here, particularly the white tea and ginger one. You are given a robe, slippers, and locker when you check in and green tea and snacks after your treatment in the lounge.

Shizuka is a hidden gem in this city. Def one of the nicest spas I have been to in NYC –and by that I mean the service and quality. It might not be as large and fancy looking as other spas but the service is probably the best you will encounter.
I have tried various facials here with Misato. I usually stick with the classic facial but if I am having breaks outs have tried the Acne one. Both are excellent. Massages with Hirome are the best! Def worth the price — she gets all your knots out and you leave the room feeling much more relaxed! And their gel manicures are the high quality — it’s more expensive than other nail salons but I can tell you from experience you are paying for higher quality and design.
The spa itself is in an office building — when you walk in it’s a very clean, well lit space. If you are using the spa they take you to a back room with lockers to change in and you wait in a small waiting area for your service.
Have been going here for over a year now and can’t imagine not going back. Def recommend to those looking for a high quality spa experience but don’t need the fancy, large spa space.

Shizuka is a quaint day spa in the heart of the Rock. I love the Eyelash perm service. Seeing women expats coyly come out of the place with lashes out there is always fun to see and because eyelash batting is always in fashion!
Purifying Spa Package is the way to go. Felt rejuvenate after the treatment along with a fantastic facial massage. Miki is fantastic and also does awesome prenatal massages.
Shizuka products are also one of the best products I’ve tested on my skin. Since my skin are both oily & dry (d’oh!).they tailored the products to fit my skin style. Asian porcelain/​honey glowing skin is pretty famous… Shizuka is the secret ;)

Sadly, for my update, I had to change my rating from 5 stars to just 2 stars.
This used to be my favorite place for facials, but sadly it isn’t anymore. They no longer offer the facial that I like (in fact their list for facials changed a bit.) And my favorite aesthetician Lisa is no longer there. I’ve tried a few of the other aestheticians but the results haven’t been as consistent.
It also seems to me that the spa’s focus changed a bit. They used to focus a lot more on skin care treatments, but now they are moving into more cosmetic treatments (they have a list of different treatments for eyelashes — tinting, perming, extentions, etc.)
I used to think of this place as the experts of skincare because their skin treatments were wonderful and the whole place was extremely relaxing. The waiting room was nice and quiet and all the clients came out looking refreshed. Now that they focus more on cosmetic treatments, the clientele changed and I no longer get the nice zen feeling while I’m there.
I miss the former Shizuka experience. t I guess all good things come to an end, and I must move on as well.

I went here for a gel manicure and pedicure. Because I was late they only had time to do the manicure, which I was fine with. It’s pricey but I figured that was ok because it would last a while. They have a guarantee that they will re-​do it if it chips or peels within the first 10 days of the application. Around day 10⁄11 some peeling did begin but only at the fingertips and not at the base which meant I could just trim my nails with clippers and a file and the rest of the nail looked pristine. I just cut my nails which cut off the peeling part — so I still have a very nice gel manicure that has lasted two full weeks (even though there was some peeling at the fingertips by day 10). I definitely recommend this over the OPI gel axxium which I have had about 4 times and only once was it successful (meaning it lasted the appropriate amount of time, while the other three times it was chipped or peeling within a week).
The salon is small but nice, smells good, and the staff is friendly. I’d go back for another gel manicure but for waxing, facials, massage etc I’ll stick to Bliss.

This is a great spa and salon. It is such a relaxing environment that you forget that it is right in the middle of midtown. LOVE it.
A bit pricey but the outcome is worth it. Only downside is that while most places charge an extra $ 5 – 10 dollars for French, they charge an extra $ 20. That can put a damper on your visit. But overall, a good spot.

I checked out Shizuka after reading an article in New York magazine online about their LED gel manicure. They are also having a $ 40 manicure special until Labor Day. This was my first time getting any kid of gel manicure. Kimoko was my manicurist and she was very nice. Heavy accented, but she was very knowledgable and helpful with any questions I had about the manicure. You get to pick from a few color options. I decided on a natural pink with a darker pink/​purple gradiation at the tip. She uses the Presto brand LED gels. With each layer that she applys, you stick your hand under the LED light for a few seconds and «presto» it’s dry. After a basic manicure, she applies a base coat, two color coats, and then the top coat. I love my manicure (check pic posted). Hopefully it lasts the entire two weeks because I am extremely rough with my hands. I will you guys a status update soon!
