History

Established in 2014.

JoanMarie Ke‘alaileiha‘aha‘a Hughes and Marcie Mahinakealo Cheung launched A Honu World of Hula in August 2014 at the Mukilteo Athletic Club (formerly Gold’s Gym). Since then, we have expanded to Village Green Yoga in Issaquah.

Hula Instructor, JoanMarie Ke‘alaileiha‘aha‘a («Aunty Ha‘aha‘a») Hughes was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawai‘i and has had a life-​long love of dance and music. She has been dancing hula for 40+ years, and although she has also greatly enjoyed studying ballet, jazz, lyrical, tap, and modern dancing, it is through the hula that Ha‘aha‘a has maintained the special connection to her home in Hawaii and its rich cultures. She feels incredibly blessed and honored to have had the opportunities to study with the following Kumu Hula (Hula Masters) including: Aunty Leilani Alama, Uncle George Naope, Etua Lopes, Sachiko Kamaile Tanaka, Pua Case, Willie Pulawa, and Mary Kay French, among others. It is with great humility and gratitude that she extends her heartfelt thanks to all Kumu Hula for sharing their mana‘o with her (and her students).
