As a 35-​year-​old Porsche specialty establishment we use only the latest tools, equipment, and factory manuals to service your Porsche. We provide complete mechanical services including complete brake and ABS system repairs; complete engine and transmission repairs; full-​line suspension and steering service; routine factory recommended mileage intervals; electronic drivability troubleshooting and repairs; clutch system adjustments and repairs; electrical repairs and modifications; engine diagnostics; transmission repairs and overhauls; speedometer and odometer repairs and calibration; tire and wheel sales and installation, glass and seal replacement; door, window, and other body seals and gasket replacement with OEM parts, and computerized four wheel alignment.

History

Established in 1971.

We are a 2nd generation family-​run facility specializing in Porsche. We have been in the same location in Mountain View, CA, for over 39 years. Our shop was first opened in 1971 by Porsche-​trained and certified Master Mechanic Willem Modderman and his brothers Hans and Ronald. After I experienced many years of tutelage at the shop and formal training at De Anza Auto Technology, the business was passed on to me, David R. Modderman.

Like Porsche, we strive to provide our clients with the highest levels of integrity and satisfaction. We understand the passion that surrounds the marquee and the long-​term relationships Porsches create with their owners. There is no reason this same attachment shouldn’t be forged with the people who service your Porsche in order to maintain its safety, performance, and value in the long term. Whether you are looking for basic maintenance of a pre-​A 356 or want to prepare your late 911 for club racing, We can take care of you and your Porsche!

I’ve been meaning to write this review for several months now as David Modderman did a 4-​wheel brake replacement and service on my 2006 Boxster S at the end of October. He was 100% upfront and honest about the costs and time frame for the repairs and I saved nearly 50% over what I would have paid at the dealer for the same work. The work was done perfectly and to the highest standard, he provided me with all of my used parts and an exceptionally detailed explanation of the work performed and even helped me out with another issue I had with my vehicle free of charge. Can’t recommend David and his shop highly enough. Thanks again for the great deal and the great service!

My boyfriend and I chose Modderman because of its high Unilocal ratings when our Porsche 911’s engine broke, but shortly realized that we had made a big mistake. David Modderman is not a honest business owner, and completely misled us on the value of the car. David told us that the most we could get for our car in its current state with a broken engine was ~$ 2,000. He offered to buy the car from us as is for ~$ 2,500, or replace the engine for ~$ 8,000−10,000. Fortunately, we did a sanity check on the selling price on eBay and discovered that cars similar to ours with broken engines sold for at least $ 10,000-$ 12,000! It was clear that David was hoping to take advantage of our ignorance and lowball us on price. Had we trusted David, we would have been cheated out of at least $ 8,000. Once we figured out the pricing issue, we immediately told David that we would like to take the car back and sell it ourselves. In the end, we were able to sell our car via eBay for $ 12,000. We were very disappointed by the Modderman’s dishonesty, and caution future customers to be wary.

Dave is amazing. He’s not a typical mechanic at all, but rather a guy who you just want to hang out with and chat about cars. I brought a Porsche in for a pre-​purchase inspection, and the whole process was painless. He even let us use his shop afterwards to sign over all the necessary documents (as he was getting ready to close no less)

We have a Carrera 911 4s and could not imagine taking the car anywhere else (even though it is still under warranty with Porsche). Dave rocks and is very knowledgable. The last time we dropped off the car, he turned around service in a day. Totally unexpected, given all the cars he had in the shop, but most appreciated.

I brought my Volvo here to be serviced on the recommendation of a former mechanic acquaintance of mine. The issues were diagnosed and fixed promptly, I was treated courteously and respectfully at every step of the process, and did not hesitate to schedule my regular tune-​up with them for next month. Very positive experience.

Great work, good price, friendly service. If they’re busy, it might take a bit longer than your dealership as they don’t have a giant shop with a team of mechanics, But usually plenty fast, and if not they’re worth any wait. They’re able to tackle big jobs as well as smogs, and able to take on unusual cars — I’ve got an old 914 w Chevy V8 and lots of custom work and parts — they aren’t scared to work on anything!

I’ve been using Dave Modderman for a few years now on both my 993 and 997 and have enjoyed nothing short of honest great service topped off with personal (and personable) experiences.
Getting to know your mechanic is part of the experience of Porsche ownership, and Dave is definitely an air cooled geek and more. Every conversation I recall in the past years has been both informative and sincere.
I do some of my own work, but when laziness or lack of skills becomes an issue, I happily take the cars to Dave.
Highly recommended to you Porsche owners in the Peninsula.

Do take your care here. The owner drives, races and works on Porsche exclusively. I brought my car here for an inspection before I purchased it from a private party. They spent time and asked a lot of questions about the car before even looking at it. Although there is never a guarantee on a used car buy, they provided a great service to help prevent making a big mistake through their thorough analysis. My impression based on the questions they were asking and the presentation of the results was that they are experts on Porsche cars. They also gave me good trouble shooting advice and what preventative measures to take to maintain optimal performance. They get 5 stars for diagnostic and minor service work. I will add the 5th star for the overall rating when I see how they do with modification work.
Update: I decided to leave my car stock. I still rate this shop five star for their thorough guidance and explanation of servicing and proper maintenance and car care.

Dave did all maintenance and repairs on my 87 944S and always with great results. He’s now my go-​to guy for work on my 93 911 Targa. He always provides solid estimates and gives options where he sees them — including to leave something for a while to see if it gets worse or goes away. I strongly recommend his shop for any Porsche repair

I don’t know much about cars, so he really explains everything to me in detail and shows me what is going on.literally. I saw my brake pads that were shot and my nasty worn down tires.
he quotes everything out before he does the work and up to this point everything has been very reasonable.

One of my friends invited me to attend a NASA Pro Racing event on June 28, 2009 at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, CA. This sounds like fun so I signed up for the HPDE-​1, paid the membership fee, and thought this was it. In preparation for this driving class, all drivers must have an approved SA2005 helmet, a vehicle OK’ed for track, and maintain appropriate rules and guidelines. I read the pages and pages of rules and finally purchased my helmet on-​line. And last, I needed to find a place to Inspect my car and OK it for track use.
I called a few approved places on the racing website that were local, and the only person to answer on a Friday afternoon at 4:15pm was Modderman Service. The shop doesn’t open weekends, but opens until 5pm on weekdays. I told him I could stop in by 5:00pm on Monday and he said he’ll be there. I didn’t bother to look at his website until I made the appointment and when I did, I noticed his shop was a Porsche Specialist. When I arrived at the shop on Monday afternoon, I was greeted promptly and David came out to see me. David knew exactly what he was looking for and performed a thorough inspection of my BMW. He signed off on the School Technical Inspection Form and gave me some parting advice, «Make sure you keep the shiny side up!»
David was in a hurry for another appointment and when he drove by my parked car, he gave me a little toot from his classic Porsche.
If I were in the market to buy a Porsche and I do like the Carrera 4s, I would definitely bring my car in for service with David Modderman.

I have an 1998 Boxster and David Modderman gave me excellent service. I took it in for a tune up and he was very, very, professional and honest with me. Dave Modderman worked on my 1992 964 Cab.
Great friendly guy. I just bought this Porsche and the previous owner installed a new top here. The top wasn’t aligned correctly on the driver’s side. Took it back here and Dave fix it in a couple of days and didn’t charge me.
I wish I can bring my car here for service but I live in San Francisco.

I just bought my new used Porsche and the person who sold it to me recommended this place because this was there they took it to get it serviced. It’s a small shop in Mountain View that specializes in Porsches.
So far, I am very satisfied with their knowledge and courteous service. Plus, they can drop you off if you are within 10 miles. That is a big plus. I am not sure what the price difference is from a dealership, so I’m not really sure if I am getting a «bargain» or not, but they seem like a very honest and reliable place so far.
