CarLotz

I am quite dissatisfied with my recent experience as a «seller» at Carlotz, which is a shame because Carlotz has a strong marketing proposition at its core, but they do not execute. It took weeks and several requests from two different locations for me to receive (via email!) the required paperwork needed for Carlotz to actually sell our vehicle. They charged their listing fee twice (they did refund the second charge weeks later after we found the error). Carlotz’ inspection and cleaning process is laughable and wouldn’t impress me as a buyer; so I got each completed professionally shortly after listing and seeing the results of their work. «Professional photographs» is a gross exaggeration and had to be completed a few times to get right. The price Carlotz recommended we list our vehicle was very overstated and not supported by the local market (revealed by independent research). Carlotz estimated a 30 to 45-​day (max) sell. While I understand Carlotz cannot look into the future with their crystal ball, another identical YMM, with fewer miles, has been sitting on their lot for ten months (it is still available at the time of this review). A distinct disadvantage of Carlotz staff vs. those as traditional/​professional dealerships is that Carlotz staff doesn’t seem to know anything about any of their inventory nor do they even ask for the sale much less keep their «sellers» informed on their progress, interested parties or market changes without being prompted. Carlotz states that your vehicle will be marketed on Craig’s List, Twitter and Facebook; this is false. As a businessman myself, I see and respect the value and innovation of Carlotz’s business model, but at the end of the day, I found it to be all fluff. Fancy graphs that show what’s listed, not what’s being sold (which is what matters to «sellers»). I was able to get more trading my vehicle into CarMax than Carlotz could get for me after four months on the market (incl. their commission). Perhaps I micromanaged Carlotz, but their lack of organizations, ability, and later credibility, certainly didn’t exude confidence in me from the beginning. The car was traded last week, but I do not recommend Carlotz regardless whether you are a buyer or seller. Work with a reputable company or brand dealership instead.

The only way to buy a car! My wife and I were looking for a «first» car for our daughter who was turning 16. One thing I can’t stand is the car buying process and this was from that. We were able to find a suitable car and quickly make a decision and drive off the lot in a short period of time. If you are selling or buying a car I would highly recommend CarLotz!

I had heard nothing be good things about the Carlotz crew before I decided to purchase a car. I have to say, these guys make the car buying experience painless. The cars are clean and heavily inspected, and I trust the entire staff from top to bottom. I would recommend them to anyone, especially those like me that don’t have time to shop around for the best car and deal. Let them do it. Thank you!

Horrible experience today — emailed to verify a vehicle was there received a response yes. Stopped there early today and was told oh that was taken back by the owner on Monday.
Quite annoying having driven 35 miles one way for nothing. Of course they tried to put me in something else umm hello? If I was interested in another make I would’ve inquired about it.
Won’t go back !

Easy, quick and painless process — what all car buying and selling transactions should be. When I first got to the dealership, I was a bit taken aback at the informal attitude of the place — note, this is not a bad thing! It makes for a much more relaxed atmosphere. The employees are all friendly and affable while remaining professional, and never once did I feel pressured into anything. I was able to purchase one of my dream cars for a very reasonable price thanks to them, and Josh was able to give me a slightly higher trade-​in amount for my car than other dealerships I had taken it into.
If I ever had a car that I would want to sell, I would consider using Carlotz for this process as well. In fact, I wish I had tried to sell my Mercedes with them instead of trading it in after learning what they do!

Had an absolutely fantastic experience with the Carlotz crew. We sold a car with them — fantastic communication, knew where the process was at all times — and even got more for the car than we were expecting!
I can’t imagine an easier experience selling a used vehicle. And getting a better price than selling to a dealer (brutal) or Carmax is more than a cherry on top. Thanks Carlotz!

Without a doubt the most relaxed and stress free car buying experience I’ve ever had. It makes sense since this is a new (and great) concept in buying and selling cars, and it works.
These guys take all of the typical «high pressure/​greasy used car sales» stereotype out and instead use a friendly and professional consultative approach. Not once did I ever feel like I was being sold something. They simply contacted the seller and got back to me with any questions they could not answer in thorough and timely manner and made the transaction unusually uncomplicated.
I had just purchased a certified Mercedes-​Benz from a DC Metro M-​B dealer in February and was expecting top notch salesmanship and honesty but now only wished it had gone half as smooth as this transaction at Carlotz. My Mercedes experience was a nightmare in comparison and ended up being a typical car buying experience. Not so with Carlotz.
I fully recommend Carlotz to any buyer/​seller who is seeking a smooth and pain free car buying experience.

I purchased a car through Carlotz. Good guys, straightforward. Their model allows them to be straightforward about the vehicles they’re offering. I definitely picked up a great car at a great price. I’d certainly consider them for another purchase and even selling a car too. They’re also a bunch of gear-​heads, which can’t be all bad.
