The Peabody Memphis

This hotel is a mixed bag. On one hand you have a stunning old building with beautiful lobby, bars, shops, etc… On the other hand, you have small old rooms with paper thin walls that charge upwards of $ 300/​night. Given that you could stay at the Crowne Plaza for half and have large rooms and utter silence, I’m not sure why you wouldn’t. The historic and interesting areas are all public — you can walk right through the lobby or eat at the restaurants off the street. Further, the bathrooms are tiny. Picture the bathrooms in a ship’s stateroom or on a sleeper car and you’ve got the picture. The appointments in the bathroom are decent, it’s just beyond compact.
The walls in the rooms were so thin I could hear everything next door. Someone brought in a stereo. Who are they letting in this place? What kind of animal brings a stereo to a hotel? Why isn’t there a disclaimer that walls are thin, so please keep it down?
Also, the carpet was coming up in my room. Ugh…
Meh.

We’re on an 8000 mile road trip via Tesla. At the Halfway point, Memphis, we figured the fabled Peabody Hotel would be a welcome relief from the «challenge» of charging an electric car in the Black Hole of Green Technology that is Arkansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee. When we made our reservation (special deal $ 249 a night) we were told that the «Tesla Charger» was free for guests. Imagine our surprise when we discovered that Peabody didn’t «own» the (non-​Tesla) charger, and that we’d be paying six cents a minute. A full charge will cost us 86 dollars (what’s that in gallons, by the way?) because Blink, the so-​called owner of the chargers, chooses to install 25 amp circuitry. The Peabody «manager» says «there’s nothing I can do,» to which I say «bullshit.»
Is it possible to give no stars? What a disappointment from this «gem of the south.»

If you’re looking for a classy, historic hotel that’s well-​maintained, equal parts restored and preserved, and has all the modern amenities while keeping it’s classic feel, this is the place. They even have actual phone cubbies for cryin’ out loud!
The only thing I was a little put off by is that the outer parts of the bottom floor are mall-​style shopping areas. That said, they weren’t in the center space, and were nicely designed to not distract (too much) from the grace and class of the old hotel herself.
But that’s not why you’re here. You’re here for the ducks!
Come to the main lobby at 11am or 5pm, and this grand old hotel will treat you to a show of trained ducks trotting along a red carpet out of an elevator (11am show) and to their centrally located lobby fountain, where they will happily remain until the afternoon, when they’ll again hit the red carpet (5pm show) to be escorted back across the carpet and to the elevator, taking them to their night time roost.
Well worth a visit if you’re in the area :)
Some tips — this is a popular attraction, so if you want seats, come early and enjoy some of their stellar wine, beer, or cocktail menu. We were there at quarter ’til a 5pm show and it was jam-​packed.
On drinks, my wife had a glass of champagne to celebrate the ducks, while I ordered an «Adult Root Beer» (how can you not?) for which I immediately felt guilty, because the bartender had to send someone upstairs *twice* for ingredients to make it. But, throughout, both the bartender and runner were unfailingly cheerful and polite. And the drink? man that sucker was good: D

I’ve stayed at the Peabody at least 20 times and only had one bad experience… until now. Worst night ever. From the time we pulled up to getting in our room it was awful! It’s not that the valet Parker was new and completely unhelpful, or that the girl checking us in was completely unhelpful or that they put four people in a room that shouldn’t be for any more that one, at the most two (and that would be a stretch.) it is that they were all rude. Incredibly indifferent and rude. Sad Peabody. I expect more from you!!!

Beautiful hotel. When we arrived we were told that we would receive a free upgrade. When we asked why the response was, ‘you have been selected’. Whatever the reason it was wonderful.
We were upgraded to the club level floor, and all the perks that go with, including free valet parking. The rooms are beautiful and well appointed. The ducks are very cute, but the whole ceremony is a bit overblown. The best part of it is the history of the hotel and the ducks.
What needs to be improved is the lobby bar. Unskilled bartenders and a terrible overpriced wine selection. For this caliber hotel I would expect more, especially for the prices.

You can’t go to Memphis without visiting the Peabody. We stopped by at night when we first got to town but had to go back the next afternoon to see the duck ceremony. The hotel is gorgeous and the ducks are a long-​time favorite. The explain the history of ducks and have a special ceremony to walk them out of the fountain and to their «beds» on the roof. Family friendly experience!

I normally don’t spend the kind of bank that it takes to stay in a hotel like the Peabody. However, it was our anniversary so I thought it would be nice to stay somewhere swanky for once. Off to the Peabody we go!
We got there at 2pm on a Friday and checkin is at 4pm so I was a little worried that we wouldn’t be getting a room until much later. My plan was just to hold our bags there and walk around some until then. So I go up to the check in counter and the girl says, «Welcome, we are so glad you are here.» with a huge smile and I was totally taken aback. Like I felt like she may have really meant it. Excellent service. Then she says that our room is ready, here’s my key, it will also get me out of the garage when I leave. SWEET!
Of course, this is a historical hotel and is old so the rooms are going to have some interesting quirks compared to other hotels, but not in a bad way. Our room was a soft lavender color with white ceilings and crown molding. A chandelier was above the bed. There was a desk right by the bed, a chair with little table by the closet, and a king bed. The closet had an actual door on it — and inside was a safe, some robes, extra blankets, and even an UMBRELLA TO USE. WTF?! The bathroom was tiny as you might expect but had nice products and even a little duck shaped soap. Aww. The bed was super comfy with nice thread count sheets. The air conditioner really cranked too. It was sooooo comfortable for a nice afternoon snooze.
So yeah, the Peabody has the ducks. Since the BF had never been there, we went up to the rooftop to see where the ducks live. Even though it was the afternoon there were some ducks up there as they were training a new group of ducks (they change them out every few months and send the others back into the wild). Of course, the rooftop views are awesome! And don’t forget that during the summer they have rooftop parties with bands and booze on Thursdays!
We came down to the lobby to wait for our friend and also for the ducks to do their little walk to the elevator to go to their home on the roof. Everyone that works here is on their game. Our waitress at the lobby bar brought drinks, snacks (wasabi peas! almonds! little crackers!), and even went to look for an empty chair for our friend because I gave our extra one to an old lady to sit in. Anyway, the drinks are good and the selection of liquors is top notch… but it ain’t cheap. However, you are at the Peabody, so what is cheap? Get on with your posh self!
The lobby gets packed the fuck out around duck time (11AM and 5PM). Once that starts, they make everyone at tables sit and do not let anyone from the crowd come stand in front of you. Pretty nice. Then you get to watch the ducks walk in a line to the elevator. Quack quack. It is really freaking cute though. Amazingly we left at 11AM the next day so the BF got to see them walk back down again… this was inadvertent… and walking off the elevator in front of that crowd was kind of awkward given the hungover, non-​showered, and dazed state I was in.
The gift shops have a treasure trove of shit I don’t need but want. Tons of duck stuff, clothes, wine glasses, stuffed animals, baby stuff, whatever. Even jewelry and non-​Peabody related clothes. I managed to buy my nieces a rubber ducky dressed as Elvis (ok, I bought myself one too, and I don’t even like taking BATHS). And a Christmas ornament that says Peabody and has bridge on it.
And obviously the Peabody is located right downtown so if you want to see Beale and all the places around there it is the perfect location.
Basically the entire experience was exemplary. I loved it. Definitely want to stay here again next time I come… maybe when I get another refund check from the IRS?!

Four stars for the ducks. Five for the room and staff which were fantastic!
The ducks go for a «walk» every day at 11 and 5. So, the lobby is packed with people wanting to see the ducks which is understandable. However, if you wanted to say… Go to your room at those times, that is a problem. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the ducks and the whole duck deal… just wanted to get to my room.
Loved room 1137 and the hotel and the staff plus the bar. Historic and fun.
Can I mention the ducks one more time? They have a room on top of the hotel. Nice to be a Peabody duck!!!

Thank you, Peabody Hotel, for always putting together the fanciest Christmas spread, so I never had to break my back cooking. I haven’t been a Memphian for over a year, but hold fond memories of this event! I highly, highly recommend the Christmas buffet. The bottomless mimosas are lovely, too. Definitely go if you are around for the holidays.

The Good: I was in Memphis for work and I have to say the Peabody is a very nice hotel. The room was very big and lovely. The ducks are also a nice touch. Also, it is in a fun area. I didn’t have a car but found it easy to walk around.
The Bad: I was not pleased with the customer service. I had a nice j crew sweater that I did not end up wearing and never left my room. At the end of my stay, I could not find the sweater after looking up and down for. It was white so I figured it could of easily been mistaken as a towel or sheet. I called the front desk and they said they would alert housekeeping and security. They were unable to find the sweater before I left the hotel but said they would follow up with me. A few days later I never heard from them. After calling the hotel and leaving a message with security, I never heard back. Pretty upsetting since it was a new sweater and didn’t really feel the hotel was accommodating with following up and helping me locate it.

Wow!!! This place is amazing and the duck show was very interesting as well. Hotel employees are very nice and friendly. A definite two thumbs up!

Beautiful hotel and lobby, definitely worth walking through even if you’re not staying there. The duck walk is adorable, however, the staff was surly and overbearing, and really tarnished the experience for us. The lobby security/​duck Gestapo took their jobs a bit too seriously, and were very rude to anyone standing, talking, moving, doing human activities, etc., even the children. They’re ducks, not Bengal tigers. Relax.

Stayed at this hotel a few years ago on a trip through the south. We were excited to stay in this historic hotel with the famous duck march. We were planning on staying 2 nights but after checking in and seeing what poor condition the room was in we decided to checkout the next day. What a huge disappointment! Our trip consisted fn many other historic hotels and they were all beautifully restored or maintained so there is absolutely NO reason this hotel should be so neglected. The amount of tourists that frequent this hotel should be incentive enough to take pride in ownership and not let this place go so downhill. Sad, sad, sad!

This is a beautiful hotel just two short blocks from Beal Street. We stayed in a suite on the 11^th floor, and were disappointed by a few things. First off we were right next to the elevator which can be heard at all hours moving up and down. There was no real comforter on the bed, and the maids seemed a little lazy (not putting things away ect). However, what really got to me was how crappy the valet service is. I had called down ten minutes before arriving in the lobby to have our car pulled around, got down to find out that no one ever «got the word» the valets were lazy and slow walking around and showing no hustle.
Otherwise, the hotel is gorgeous, great location, and friendly front desk and suite personnel.

Went to a wedding reception and valet parked. After 1 hour at the reception they charged me $ 20.00. Robbery and low class.

We went to the Peabody to see the famous MARCHING PEABODY DUCKS… but the place was so PACKED… It was so packed, it was hard to get a glimpse of the «infamous waddle» as they emerged from the elevator and made their way to the fountain the glizy lobby of this gorgeous hotel.
But, at least we can say we were in this amazing hotel from the HEY DAY era, and we can say «HEY, we once went to the Peabody in Memphis» I love to have little moments like this that are forever embedded into our memories. I have always tried to do this for my children growing up… tons of fun memories to remember their mommy by!!!
The Peabody of Memphis is the South’s Grand Hotel, a blast from the glitzy glamorous past. It is conveniently located only about 2 maybe 3 blocks from Beale Street, so its extremely easy to hop over from the jazzy melodies on Beale to the quiet lobby of the Peabody. I would love to have the extra money to spend the night in this Elegant Jewel of Memphis !!!

Okay, I am an animal lover, so I might be bias, but I just adore this hotel. I mean come on… ducks that ride an elevator! Plus, the hotel is pet friendly! If you are traveling with a nonhuman family member, they give you a bowl, a cute poo baggy holder for your leash, and a list of animal-​friendly activities in the area. Some people might find this frustrating, however, I REALLY appreciate it, but they require vaccination records for pets. What a relief that you don’t have to worry if there was a weirdo in your room before you who let their poor dog contract kennel cough and then subsequently pass it on to your furry family. They do charge a pet fee for cleaning purposes but it’s exponentially cheaper than boarding or a pet sitter, plus you know you’re not gonna be sleeping in someone else’s cat’s hair. They also allow you to leave your pet unsupervised in the room (which most hotels don’t), but if for some reason your neighbor’s bird or puppy goes psycho, they have security take them to the hotel’s kennels so you can sleep, or sleep in, or drink in peace :)
Also, I love the character and charm. It’s on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as many other registries. I feel like this is what all hotels should be. It’s updated but Romantic and cozy (notice I used a capital ‘r’, in ‘Romantic’, not a lower case one. if you don’t know the difference, you probably won’t get it). EVERYONE that works here is awesome. I’ve never had a problem with anyone anytime I’ve stayed here.
Let’s face it, any big city comes with its fair share of crime, but I love how diligent they are here (without being obnoxious or making you feel sketched out).
PS. Room service/​in-​room dining is pretty darn good. I really like their little pizzas. Also, pretty great location, you can basically walk anywhere in Memphis from here; unless you wanna walk like Jesus, on the water, across the Mississippi, you can’t do that from here. But you can walk alongside the Mighty River. You might even find a prairie dog… probably not though.

If you are just visiting Memphis, or if you’ve lived here your entire life, then you already know The Peabody is synonymous with opulence and class.
Originally built in the 1920’s and later purchased by the Belz family in the 1970’s and restored to its magnificent current style, it is a place that you must visit if you are in town. You will regret it if you miss the experience so just do it.
Everything here just oozes luxury without being pompous or untouchable. For instance, when I used to live in Memphis and worked downtown, I’d run across the street and get my haircut at Gould’s in the basement of the Peabody. It seemed so special to walk in here and kind of a treat in itself just to do a mundane thing as getting a haircut over a lunch break.
We recently stayed here for the first time during a quick 2-​day trip to town. So glad we splurged a little for the special occasion! The rooms are small, but pretty special. The main enjoyment is the actual lobby, the ultra cool bar, the duck fountain (of course!), absolutely spectacular and gorgeous floral arrangements, and the fun shops. Go to Lansky at the Peabody. Mr. Lansky was the personal clothier to Elvis Presley himself! I had the pleasure of meeting him many years ago when stopping in the shop and once buying a tie for my boss. There’s now a hip and trendy Lansky addition which features a fabulous selection of clothing for women and men as well.
If you have kids (or you’re a kid at heart) then make sure and visit in time for the duck march! You will not be disappointed!

We did not stay at the Peabody but we did walk through and grab a drink and dessert in the lobby. Based on our lobby visit, we’ll definitely return when in town and stay a night or two. The hotel is beautiful and well kept.
The service was a slow to be served but they were also busy. Drinks and dessert were expensive but no more than you’d expect in any other fancy hotel. The staff was polite, friendly and helpful.

We walked in planning to stay one night, took one look and decided to stay two nights and extend our long road trip. Beautiful property, excellent service and just gorgeously decorated for Christmas. The room was spacious enough for two double beds. And like a number of these older hotels, the bathroom was tiny but beautiful and well appointed. The robes were lovely. I find that this is always the trade off between classic old hotels and the modern monstrosities. The bathroom and internet. Peabody wifi is really poor. Our family has a nightly ritual of watching TV shows on Netflix or Amazon but the wifi wouldn’t support it.
We got the breakfast package but the breakfast buffet itself was insipid and uninspired. I wish I had just ordered breakfast from the regular menu. But the coffee was outstanding. They serve French pressed coffee which is wonderful. We ordered room service both nights, once for a late night snack and the second night for dinner (we were watching the democratic debate in the room) and both nights, we enjoyed the food very much. If you are in the mood for indulgence, do order their freshly baked cookies with milk. Just divine. We also enjoyed hanging out in the lobby bar. A place for people watching and a place to be seen (I presume for the locals). We ran into a lovely librarian couple who were in town to take in a Tony Bennet concert and had a nice chat.
Overall, we were happy that we stayed here. It was definitely lovely. One little complaint. We left a few things behind and I called the hotel to have them mailed and they wanted me to pay for shipping. It is not an unfair request but I once had a Holiday Inn Express mailing something for free. No, we don’t leave behind things routinely :) But wealthy people don’t become wealthy by giving money free away. The same logic applies to rich hotels as well!

The hotel is beautiful. I made the mistake of going on the Friday after Thanksgiving to see the ducks go up for the night and the Christmas tree lighting. Wow, lots of people. Most likely their busiest event of the year. It was all lovely but holy wall to wall people…

The holiday brunch is always delicious, where there’s always a huge spread of food, from breakfast brunch food (eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy) plus Thanksgiving dinner food, plus a large variety of desserts (cookies, M&Ms, cake bites, and brownies).
The wait staff was very attentive and always made sure you had drink refills if needed. The brunch is about the only meal you can eat for Thanksgiving based on the spread of food :).
The only downside is the price, so it’s not somewhere you can go on a budget.

If you want to see the definition of Southern charm and hospitality, The Peabody is for you!
I had the pleasure of being a guest recently and couldn’t have enjoyed my stay more. The property is classy, historic, romantic and is the home to some adorable ducks. Yes, there are really ducks in the lobby fountain.
The rooms, while not huge, are well-​appointed (I am a sucker for a bed with LOTS of pillows) with everything you need including very comfortable bathrobes for your lounging enjoyment. One caveat — the walls are a little thin so you may hear a dog or two barking at odd hours since the hotel is pet friendly.
Grab a seat on a comfy couch in the gorgeous lobby lounge and see the Duckmaster give an entertaining history of the hotel and their famous feathered residents during their march (each day at 11 and 5). You can also visit the ducks at their palace on the roof during their ‘off hours’.
All this and a great location with easy walking distance to many fun restaurants and bars? YES!

We stopped in solely for the morning duck march. The entire presentation was wonderful. Anthony, the duck master, did an excellent job of engaging the audience and answering their questions.

Definitely worth stopping in if you’re in town. The ducks march at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily.

The duck March is awesome but in actuality it’s only a few minutes long. So it’s getting four stars. It’s awesome and the ducks are super cute but not really worth five stars. And if you got lots of other things planned in Memphis then I guess it could be something you miss.
The guy who leads the duck March is really nice and will happily answer your questions. I learned a lot about ducks and I hope that he was truthful in that they go to the nights farm and not the scary farm that we tell our children their pets go to when they die.

Tennessee
I have bin in this state many times. I have bin their, over their, and here. I have also seen this great state during the winter. Every time I have enjoyed my visit. This time it was extra special, because of my stay at the Peabody Hotel. This hotel not only had fascinating history, it also had music history. The atmosphere was classy, and fun. They had a duck theme. At the end of my stay I became duck crazy. I wanted everything that had a duck on it. Including the towel’s. But at the end I walked away with one free bar of soap shaped like a duck, and my great memories of this great hotel. Everything that is amazing about Memphis is in walking distance. It’s centrally located.

Our journey to The Peabody started on Priceline a few weeks back. After reading many reviews on Unilocal I decided to try my hand at bidding for a room through Priceline.
Bid was accepted and I couldn’t wait. There are a couple of things you only try once or twice in your life and staying at The Peabody for me is one of them.
I couldn’t wait to check into my room and get out of the sweltering heat and humidity. I could see my hair was already turning into Monica’s humidity-​ridden mane from that one episode where they are in Barbados! Ugh! The heat!
The moment we drove up we were greeted politely by the bell-​hop and directed to check in. It was all sunshine and smiles every step of the way :)
Check in was smooth, nice polite hotel agent. Sad I didn’t catch her name she did a great job and had a welcoming smile!
The walk to our room was very easy.
Unlocking the door to our double queen room, which I was counting down to, was met with beautifully ice-​kool refreshing air! Aaahhh! I was in heaven… ok, ok. onto the room… the view. the sites… the bed. The Duckies… duckie soap, duckies to purchase and take home. duckie labels on the tissue roll … I was loving the duckie motiff!

Such amazing attention to detail throughout the building that started off in 1925 at its 2^nd location. Marble all around the lobby with gorgeous columns lining the area.

Shower head for a 4 hotel I would think should be better and a higher grade from the lower end it had.
Low water pressure
Self Serve Parking $ 18.00 a night which is doable however the parking structure is not a hop, skip & a jump away it’s more, like a hike through Mt. Rainier. Going in and out of buildings and up and down elevators through a few different corridors until you’ve realized you are at the end of Beale Street. Picture to be added but before that we will need to prepare for the journey by packing a sack lunch and taking a few changes of clothes lol!
Over all our weekend stay was great. No complaints as my vacay comes to an end.

The first time I was here at this hotel was almost 20 years ago. Twenty years later, the ducks are still doing their march to the fountain. This place is such a nice hotel. Rooms are modest, but comfortable. The swimming pool and hot tub are clean and other amenities are up to par with the best (spa, gym, etc.) The lobby bar was pretty cool because you get to sit 5 feet from the ducks by the fountain (at least until 5pm).
There is also a coffee shop, two restaurants, and another corner bar. The service is great and the souvenir shops have all things ducks.
If you get the opportunity to stay here, please do! You won’t regret it!
Oh and it’s also about 15 minutes from the airport and 1 block from Beale street. GREAT location!

The Peabody Memphis is gorgeous and historic. The chandelier in the main lobby was stunning and the ducks are quite something to see. How is it that those ducks are even more well-​behaved than other children?
I read somewhere that the hotel was one of the hotels (if not *the* hotel) where people went to see and be seen, especially for the uppercrust crowd. I do not think that was an exaggeration, as it really does exude elegance, charm and everything one would attribute to Southern aristocracy of old.
Had I been given a choice, The Peabody is where I would have stayed when I was in town, as they are also located near other famous Memphis landmarks (Beale Street, National Civil Rights Museum, and Auto Zone Park are all within walking distance).
Guess where I will be staying at next time I am in Memphis?

Ein schönes Hotel mitten in Downtown Memphis. Alles auf alt und geschichtsträchtig getrimmt. Zum Teil etwas overdone. Die Bar in der Lobby führt eine gute Karte mit Craft Beers. Allerdings ziemlich teuer. Allgemein stimmen bei diesem Hotel Preis und Leistung nicht ganz. Man bezahlt für die Deko und die Lage. Von Service habe ich nicht viel gespürt. Würde das nächste Mal was anderes buchen.

Staying here is all about the charm of staying at the oldest hotel in Memphis. With that… It’s the oldest hotel and although very clean and well Maintained the Rooms are very small and furnishings old world. I prefer a larger room with a large bathroom and updated furnishings. Seeing the ducks March on Sunday mornings is fun but you can do that for free without a $ 436 night stay.

The lobby is always buzzing and the shops are nice it’s definitely a place to visit for the experience of it but doesn’t require a nights stay.

Das Peabody hat eine beeindruckende große Lobby mit einem marmornen Springbrunnen in der Mitte und einer großen Bar, die wie der Hochaltar einer französischen Kathedrale die Stirnseite der Lobby ziert. Dort sitzen vor allem an den Wochenenden Menschen des Südens dicht an dicht an der Bar, geniessen starke Getränke und rauchen schwere Zigarren. Sie reden im angenehmen Tennessee-​Slang sehr langsam und gemütlich. Es sind Weisse und Schwarze manche mit bunter Staffage und mit unglaublichen Glunkern an den Fingern und um den Hals. Ich sah dort einen riesigen Smaragd wunderbar grün an dunkler Hand funkeln. Im ersten Stock gibt es einen umlaufenden Gang von dessen Brüstung man am besten die Geschehnisse in der Lobby verfolgen kann.
Das Peabody ist berühmt für seine Peabody Ducks. Diese Enten wohnen oben auf dem Dachboden und werden in einer großartigen Zeremonie von rot livrierten Bediensteten aus dem Aufzug über einen roten Teppich durch die Lobby zum Springbrunnen hinüber geleitet. Dort dürfen sie ein Weile plantschen. Dieses Ritual findet zweimal täglich statt und hunderte von Kinderaugen verfolgen hinter den Absperrseilen mit glänzenen Augen die Geschehnisse. Manchmal muss ein Bediensteter einen Erpel mit sanftem Stockhinweisen wieder auf den rechten Weg auf dem roten Teppich weisen. Dieser Brauch wird seit vielen Jahrzehnten geübt seit einstmals der besoffene Hotelinhaber und seine Kumpane sich zur Entenjagd haben Enten in die Lobby bringen lassen. Dort wurde dann im Suff scharf herumgeballert. Da dieser Vorfall allseitig große Begeisterung ausgelöst hat, wurde er als fester Brauch weiterbetrieben und gepflegt, allerdings seit langem ohne Waffen.
So sind die Südstaaten — sehr liebenswert und vergnüglich. Man denkt nicht nur ans Geldverdienen wie die Yankees im Nordosten.
