Doubletree by Hilton Memphis Downtown

It was a nice hotel. But I couldn’t understand for the life of me why most of the channels on the tv didn’t work. And I was in a Hilton Honors room.
But besides the tv it was nice. Parked on the street for free so I didn’t have to pay $ 25 valet.
The lobby was slick depressing. It didn’t look bad it just made me sad. Personal problem right? I’m used to the Westin. But seriously they should consider making it brighter and add contemporary furnishings. And there should be a lobby bar. The TGI Friday one doesn’t count. If they had a bar I think they could have cool nightly entertainment on the stage in their lobby.
But you know no one is really thinking about the lobby when they go to a hotel except me. It was a nice hotel. I can’t say how it compares to other Hilton properties. But it’s not a ratchet place.

Let me preface this two star review by saying that this review does not reflect the staff inside the hotel. Upon check-​in and throughout our stay the front desk to housing keeping was friendly and polite.
With that said, Hilton needs to strongly consider renovating this hotel. Our floor, the 10^th, smelled funky, the carpet dated, and our room was small with obvious «repairs» made, primarily in the bathroom. The room was clean but the bed uncomfortable and the tv had a very limited channel selection. I found all of this odd as a Silver HHonors member, I stay in various Hilton partners hotels often and Double Tree is usual very nice.
This two star review would be a one star if it wasn’t for the inside staff. What dropped this hotel is the fact that the valet dented the rear bumper of my rental car. When informed, they did not argue this and wrote it up. As of right now nothing has come of it and I’m hoping the rental company doesn’t notice the damage.

This hotel has a pretty lobby and friendly staff, but the rooms are run down and not well kept. The house keeping is what really lacks here: mirror has smears, there are stains on the wall, stains on the bathroom door, and scary mold or dirt in the shower tile grout. I want to stay in a clean room with no sign of anyone there before me.

For a doubletree I was kind of disappointed. The room was kind of falling apart. From the blinds not opening to the hole in the closet door. The floor was sticky. The positive is its down the block from beale street. The only block with entertainment it seems and the hotel lobby isn’t too bad. Staff was nice. Just had problems with third party booking with this hotel. If I had to stay in Memphis again (which I probably wont) i don’t think I would stay here.

The lobby is decent, the staff is friendly, but my room was awful. There wasn’t enough light in the room, the blinds were broken, the curtains didn’t close, I was in the 3^rd floor and all night I heard the drunk people walking on the street, the cars passing by, the outlets in the bathroom were crooked, the bathroom door didn’t close… What a nightmare! I basically could not sleep in 3 days… Don’t stay here!

Spent the weekend in Memphis, Tennessee for a conference. I cheated on Marriott, it was worth it for the cookies. I’m just kidding, but the cookies at check-​in are delicious. All of the front desk staff were friendly and very accommodating. We were given our breakfast buffet coupons and when we needed a cab they had our driver there before we even got off the elevator.
I like the location of this hotel because it’s so conveniently located to Memphis Cook Convention Center and also to Beale Street. When I called down to the front desk about toiletries that I had forgotten, I was just about to offer to go downstairs to pick them up when the clerk told me it would be delivered right up. And it was, there was a knock on the door from housekeeping in less than 3 minutes. Excellent service all the way. The only disappointment was Sunday breakfast in the TGIF. Our used plates were never cleared and the coffee was never refreshed. I like this hotel and would stay again.

Terrible service! After staying here for every week for 3 years straight, my misfortune that I was stuck in the Hospital and wanted to extend the room for the family, but was turned down because of «March Madness». 3 years of putting up with «
bad rooms, cockroaches in the room

Pros: comfortable and clean room. Nice staff who checked me in at 11pm on a Tuesday.
Cons: called for room service breakfast at 6:40 and 7am, and no one picked up to take my order after a good 1 – 2 minutes of ringing. (The menu states room service starts at 6am)
I pre-​ordered 3 large bottles of water ($ 2 each) to be in my room upon checking in, and there were two tiny bottles of Nestle water.
Lastly, when I woke in the morning I discovered there’s a window A/​C unit in my room. There’s no central air/​heat even though, oddly enough, there’s a control on the wall. But there are no air intake or returns in the room. This wasn’t a problem since the room temperature was fine, but worth noting for the review.

Nothing bad during my stay! I admit after reading some other reviews I was a bit nervous to book a room here!
Service was great at every level. Let’s talk about the parking situation. Valet only– yes pretty weird, however it works. Yes at 5pm I decided to circle the block a few times until the very small driveway had enough room for my tiny car. If you prefer to skip the whole scene, park at a nearby lot (I counted 6 reasonable lots within a very easy walk, even at the other Hilton property Hampton Inn) and just roll your luggage to this Doubletree. If you go valet, they are fast and friendly.. .don’t be scared, Memphis is teeny-​tiny.
The room, nothing special but certainly nothing terrible. Noise– not an issue. I am a terribly light sleeper, on the 10^th floor (Rm 1019 on a corner) and didn’t hear anyone ever. Not a great view (but who cares, Memphis is not known for its skyline!).
The room was acceptably clean and well maintained. (Here during a tremendous heatwave the AC was able to keep up while in the 100’s outside).
Even with the parking issues I like this location more than the other Hilton property downtown Hampton Inn.
You sleep in a hotel but otherwise go outside and listen to some great Memphis music! (This review applies to International travelers, very good safe location and Memphis is super hospitable to Euro travelers.. .yes even you Brits ;))

DoubleTree’s always have good service, but the staff here is exceptional! Very nice and accommodating.

At the price point it’s OK. The desk staff were welcoming and courteous. Housekeeping people could not have been nicer to us. Warm cookies were lovely. Valets were fairly prompt. I thought that the HHonors app was pretty nice the way it lets you choose your room like a seat on a plane. And the confirmations and info by email all great. The location is great. Essentially same convenience as when staying at the Peabody at about a third of the price. Much more convenient than the Madison, which is only a few blocks away but seems isolated from the restaurants, etc. Short walking distance from Tamp & Tap, which is a huge deal for coffee people.
Room was clean. Re-​purposed historic building, so some rooms have lots of windows, which is cool. The historic façade rebuilt in the lobby was cool. We aren’t really TGI Fridays people so didn’t check out the morning breakfast buffet but it looked OK.
This property caters to a younger clientele than the Peabody across the street, so the service level is going to be different. In the porte-​cochere you’re more often than not seeing people unloading and loading their luggage themselves. Also, on a Saturday night, the lobby can be rather boisterous at times.
Parking: $ 22 per day is just wrong. I’ll tip the valet. But $ 22? Yeah I get it that this extortion is common throughout downtown Memphis. But this ain’t SF or NYC. That it’s widespread doesn’t make it right. It’s not that desirable to be down there. If the public garage operators lowered their day prices to 10 you might see a renaissance of interest by the locals who don’t like to go down there now because of astronomical parking rates. I suspect that those structures would be filled.
Lighting. Some of the wood blinds in the room appear to have been intentionally disabled so that they could not be raised. I need natural light. Especially in this era of ugly blindness-​inducing fluorescent bulbs. My God how I detest CFL lighting. Especially first-​generation. I get all stabby. Like the rats in the famous experiment with yellow and pink fluorescent tubes back in the 60s. If this is the future, it’s going to be a dim dystopian one indeed. And the lobby. Come on. It’s the best feature of the hotel. I really wish that the lobby was lit in something other than cold-​blue CFL. The lobby and public areas are attractive and the designer’s work is just ravaged by ugly cold lighting. I get that there is an energy saving connected with those hellish lights, but must people never come first in this brave new world? I had the same complaint about the Westin Beale St. so you’re in good company.
Noise. I asked for and got room 433, which overlooks the ball park and the intersection of Union and Third. Cool idea in concept. Never again. Go for the highest floor available. Something higher than 7. This is a historic building so not soundproofed the way a new property might be. So, OK. Just be aware that if one tries to work in a low-​floor room during the day, one learns very quickly that Beale Street is visited predominantly by Harley riders and fools in exhaust-​mod pickups both of whom feel the burning need to rev engine three to four times during the stop light and then burn out when it changes to green. And they all head out of town down Union St. The windows don’t block out that noise, so just be aware.
Working in the hotel: This place is fine for partiers, vacationers and casual visitors. I would not stay here again if I needed to work in the room. I had to work this weekend but was really frustrated by weak wireless. No ethernet connections. At all. There was a prop ethernet connection on the desk. It was a prop because it was not connected to anything. Wireless was so weak in the lobby and in the room that the signal was crowded out by the much stronger ones from other users’ hotspots and the Holiday Inn across the street. We were dropped every two minutes. I had to connect through my iPhone to get usable vpn. I walked around looking for signal and found that it was very strong on 10, but there were only rooms up there so, if you have to work try to get a room on 10, or go to Tamp & Tap.
Finally, I think that the Hilton flag implies a little higher standard of physical plant upkeep. Light fixture in bathroom had come undone from its anchors and was drooping down over the sink; Windows were filthy on the outside, really smeared and covered in grime. Wireless strength needs to be punched up. The A/​C is really loud. It vibrates at a low frequency, Until I realized what it was, I thought they were sanding a wood floor upstairs.

We were very disappointed in this property, for a variety of reasons. I will say that the valet & bellmen were spot on when we arrived & the front desk staff were so friendly & helpful. It’s definitely these 2 groups that earned the 1 star I gave.
We were there on business and took a client out to dinner & came back to the hotel lobby to have a drink and wrap up. The restaurant adjacent to the hotel was remodeling so their bar was set up in the lobby, along with the only entrance to the restaurant. There was a girl who was obviously inebriated being given drinks by security & talking loudly and obnoxiously to everyone walking through the front door. She caused more than one scene throughout the hour we set there and was finally escorted out after she dropped a glass on the floor. (The one security had given her minutes before.) I was embarrassed that we had brought anyone here on business, much less that this was where we were staying for 3 days.
The walls are PAPER THIN. Our neighbor rocked out on Beale Street his first night in town & I could hear him crying around the next morning on the phone. However, just to paint a solid picture of how thin the walls are, I could also hear the woman he was talking to clearly & she wasn’t on speakerphone.
Housekeeping skipped our room on the first day & on the day we left, it had begun raining sometime in the night & a waterfall had commenced in the downstairs hallway from a leaking ceiling. Nobody seemed concerned about it either. I was glad we were getting out of there.
The room was dimly lit & the curtains wouldn’t close all the way, so the morning sun was sure to get you up with it. The shower dripped so much that there was a constant puddle in front of the tub.
I hope we never have to stay here again. Ever.

Nice use of existing building in the lobby for a great architectural aspect. Paid valet is a down side for me. Location is great.

Easily one of the worst Doubletree/​Hilton-​affliated hotels I’ve stayed in. I’ve been to other Doubletrees in the country and they have always been awesome experiences so I was excited to find out we would be spending a weekend here. However, I was left very disappointed. The only reason this place deserves a star is thanks to its location. Conveniently right in the middle of downtown Memphis, this hotel is across the street from Autozone Park, the Peabody and the Children’s museum. Only a few short walkable blocks from the very popular Beale Street and Sun Studio. Also the staff was very courteous and accommodating but they could not make up for the shortcomings of this hotel.
As expected, DoubleTree typically charges for parking, but I found the $ 22 required valet parking to be very excessive in a city with plenty of parking areas and generally very uncrowded. The lobby was maintained very well but unfortunately that did not translate to nice rooms. The first room we stayed in was a very cramped standard room with an awful smell that just lingered. No personal fridge was available. There is a $ 15 buffet breakfast option located at the TGIFridays within the hotel. From what my friend told me, the selection was not very good and nothing tasted fresh. Now, what completely grossed me out of this place was when we were moved to a King room and found a huge yellow stain on the comforter. It was NOT something you could easily overlook. After staying in two different style rooms here, it appears they need to renovate with a fresh coat of paint and deep clean the carpets. This place just did not live up to Hilton-​standards and my overall stay was very unpleasant. Would not recommend.

A little dated and overall cleanliness needs to be improved. Valets were great. TGIF attached is dirty and service is poor. Only had breakfast there and would not recommend it.
Good location

Disappointment is the only word I can use to describe this Doubletree. As I walked into the lobby I grew excited because it looked like a really nice hotel. When I got to my room the disappointment grew with every step I took into the room.
From the bathroom that we in need of a good cleaning (rust) to the doors and walls needing fresh paint. It was just one let down after another.
To make matters worse for those of us business travelers beware. There is NO desk in the rooms in which to work on.
The resturant (TGI Fridays) attached to the hotel is HORRIBLE. Bad food, worse service, and even worse attitudes by employees.

Great hotel. Service at the front desk, at valet and at breakfast was friendly, pleasant and helpful. My traveling companion is an Honors member, so that may be why we had nice service but he can be a pokey lil Honors guy, asking for corner rooms, upgrades, free water, rollout beds, free breakfast, more free breakfast, etc. and still. Great time.
It’s right on the main road in to downtown Memphis, just a few blocks from Sun Studios (wow!!), next door to The Peabody (see the ducks!!), attached to a TV I FRIDAYS and across from Denny’s, and across from the minor league stadium. Oh wait there’s more. It’s a two block w alkaline to Beale Street, FedEx Forum, and Rendezvous Ribs. Score!
There is valet parking, but it’s expensive: I think over $ 20 a day. And this was the day before the big concert at FEDEX.
The morning buffet breakfast and omelet station take place in TGIFridays. More great service and a ton of delicious breakfast basics: multiple eggs, multiple sausages and bacons, cereal, bagels, a toaster, etc.
The Hotel Atmosphere and lobby are rad. Definitely recommend staying here.

I will kind of echo a lot of reviews posted about this hotel.
The location is great. The staff is great. The room is spacious and clean.
The cost is high and it’s not that special of a place.
I would stay here again only if rates weren’t as high.
I don’t think you get what you pay for here.
The only extras we got were 2 cookies when we arrived and 2 free glasses of wine on second night of stay.

Lets start off, its not a terrible hotel. On the plus side, its in a super great location right downtown Memphis and across from the ballpark and the Peabody hotel. the lobby is very nice and I personally found the desk staff and valet parking folks very helpful and cheerful.
On the down side, the A/​C-​Heater in my room as pretty noisy and the room was only just clean enough. the room size was good and the rooms all seemed to have what you’d expect from a Hilton. The TFIG Fridays that in the lower level of the hotel is pretty terrible and although it hard to believe, breakfast was at best mediocre, for sure not worth the $ 12 for the buffet, better choices can be found nearby.
Be warned, DO NOT TAKE A ROOM THAT FACES SOUTH unless you want to keep the window blinds closed tight all night, there is a giant LED sign that flashes all night long across the parking lot and its super annoying.
I stayed here for a business trip so the price did not sting too much, but if I had the choice, I’d have stayed at the Peabody.

Refused to make us an omelet with real butter. I offered to get him some from another part of the restaurant and he refused. I was denied the right to safe and healthy food. Not to mention the poor attitude and lack of hospitality.
The staff varies greatly as evidenced above. Good location. Valet parking is $ 22.
