The Bar Method™Exercise Studio is a barre fitness class which uses elements of Ballet, Pilates, and Yoga, and creates a physique that is lean, firm, and sculpted by combining the muscle-​shaping principles of isometrics, the body-​elongating practice of ballet dance conditioning, the science of physical therapy, and the intense pace of interval training. It is a non-​impact one-​hour total body workout comprised of muscle strengthening and stretching techniques partially performed at the ballet bar, choreographed and executed to fun music.

Bar Method and at the same time challenges the body’s strength and endurance throughout the class. The Bar Method class alternates between exercises that demand intense bursts of energy and deep stretches. This format produces both high caloric burn and firmer muscle mass. History

Established in 2000.

Burr Leonard, a former journalist, has been practicing and improving on the exercises that now make up The Bar Method exercise system since 1991. Burr had been an avid Lotte Berk Method student since 1981 and had been teaching since 1991 when she was The Lotte Berk Method’s sole licensee.

In 1991 Burr and Carl Diehl, a lawyer, opened their first exercise studio in Greenwich, Connecticut. In 2000 they founded The Bar Method, Inc. and the next year opened their flagship studio in San Francisco. Since then they have built and franchised many Bar Method studios around the country and have produced numerous exercise dvds.

The Bar Method focuses on effectiveness, safety, and body awareness. It is the only bar workout that was designed under the guidance of physical therapists to ensure joint safety. Its teachers receive unique training in healthy patterns of movement, body connection, mental focus, and posture.

When Andrea found the Bar Method, she dropped all of her other workouts and has taken Bar Method classes exclusively for the last five years. It feels like home to her because it reminds her of her years in ballet and she loves that it gives her the same lean, toned body she had then. Andrea loves the energy and community surrounding the Bar Method and she is always excited to take class because they are always different and challenging. Andrea has been an instructor for 3 ½ years and loves helping her students get healthier and stronger both mentally and physically.

The dance component also drew Joanna to the Bar Method, but the results are what keeps her an addict. «It’s an hour of pure ‘me’ time, but by no means is it easy. It takes a lot of mental determination. I love the Bar Method because not only am I strengthening my body, but also my mind and spirit. It’s also the most efficient and effective whole body exercise I’ve come across.»
