Exactly a day and a half ago I had to make one of the most painful decisions of my life; Euthanasia; On my beloved guinea pig, Munchie. I mean, who in their right mind would ever want to take the life of their best friend??? I loved Munchie so much! I could write a book just talking about how much I loved Munchie! My heart is still broken, & the tears still keep falling…
One thing that I am truly grateful for was the support and understanding of the Feather & Fur hospital staff. They understood the difficulty and pain in this decision, and helped make the process a little easier. It wasn’t EASY. But the kind staff helped make it EASIER for me.
Munchie had a tumor in her abdominal cavity, which was excruciating for her. I had NO idea that Munchie was sick, because she was such a lively guinea pig. That night I noticed that she hadn’t eaten any of her food and barely drank any water, so that’s when I sat with her and tried to see what was wrong. That’s when I noticed a horrible limp and lump near her back leg.
A fact that I learned from the doctor at Feather & Furs hospital was that guinea pigs HIDE their pain. Damn. Just DAMN. If I had known, I would have done everything in my power to get her help so much sooner! Anyways… I learned that the survival rate of small animals such as Guinea pigs are very slim to none, & that her chances of making it through surgery was 30% (& that was being extremely generous). So I put Munchie to sleep.
The staff could see how sad & broken I was over the lost of my baby, & they gave me as much time as I needed with my baby before leaving. I needed that. I needed TIME, because with all of me I wish I had more time with her.
Guinea pigs are considered «exotic animals», & just as you would assume an ER visit would be financially — Yeuppp, you guessed it! A bit of an arm & leg, but this IS a pet hospital. & I would highly recommend them to anyone who needs to have their beloved pets health taken cared of. Your pets are in good hands!
Thank you Feather & Fur for taking care of my Munchie & calming her down before the actual euthanasia process. The time that you gave her with me prior to that was truly appreciated, as we could both spend her last moments together. From someone who truly & very deeply loved her pet Guinea pig, Thank You!

Little Starkus (a 1 year old cockatiel) loves Feather and Fur in Kailua! They managed to fit us in when there was a mix up with his appointment for a wing clipping this past weekend. The woman who took care of him was great (not sure what her name was) but she talked with us after the clipping about his eating habits and complimented the toys in his cage. Just really caring. This was only our second visit but we all feel really comfortable with this place.
Also, there is a very nice waiting room for the humans.

I am horribly disappointed in this experience. First, be warned this place is extremely over priced. I am aware that Hawaii is generally more expensive than the mainland. However, the prices at this place are astronomical. We took our dog in for a neutering. He came out with a 700 plus dollar bill. With extra add ons that we did NOT authorize. The vet removed some teeth that he was insistent on would cause some doom if not removed. So while our dog was under, he removed them. Again, without our permission. So conveniently for fur and feather, it was tacked on to our bill. Let me encourage you to seek other estimates from area practitioners. This cost is completely unnecessary. Furthermore, the lady (receptionist) that greeted us was horribly unprofessional. She was rude and treated us very disrespectfully. She acted as if we were bothering her when we checked in and told her we were there to get our dog. When we told her we were there, she told us nothing about our dog and then told us to sit down because the vet was with someone else. Very unprofessional. I am unsure of why she decided to be rude to us. Perhaps because we are young, have visible tattoos,
Or do not look like we belong there. Regardless, of the reason, she had no right to treat us that way. We paid our bill in full. I strongly recommend doing business elsewhere. Shame on you all for inflating prices!

We recently moved to Hawaii, my cat is over 16 with kidney disease, one morning he looked really sick, very lethargic and barely drinking and eating. I thought for sure it was the end
I called feathers and fur very early, before 7 am to get an Apointment, the receptionist was really sweet and simply said: how fast can you get here ! I rushed him there, I was seen in a matter of minutes by Dr McFly, he was really nice, he did some tests on Shrimpy and sent me home with medications and fluids (for us to give him under the skin for 7 days), tests came back ok, we are not sure what he had but he is back to being as healthy as he can be for his age ! I am really grateful for Dr MCFly. He really took the time with us, he is new to the clinic and I highly recommend him, I felt no pressure on doing some testings, it was entirely up to me. Will definitely take all my pets to this clinic again !
Our cat was taken to the vet on Nov 1^st

Our first visit, very impressed! We have a rescue Mynah & Dr. Walsh was recommended. The staff is very friendly, Dr. Walsh is super nice & the facility is well kept. Worth the trip from Ewa 2 Kailua!

I came in at 7:00am as a walk in and they called me back within 15 minutes. My cat had some bacterial infection going on with his intestines and the doctor was able to give us some medication and get him fluids right away. Everyone was so kind and caring, not to mention it was such a relief to be able to be seen so quickly.

I took marshmallow, my guinea pig, a week ago. She wouldn’t eat, drink, or even have signs of bowel movements or urination. Prior to visiting feather and fur, I went to a couple of other vets, but they didn’t have doctors on call for exotic animals that night. Just my luck. I’m not usually worried about marshmallow, but that night I really needed to see a vet.
I called before hand if they see guinea pigs. They said yes, but the wait was going to be about 3 hours. You know the wait doesn’t matter unless you are in need of bringing your pet to the vet. Finding this place was a little confusing because I’m not usually from the area. It’s located in an alleyway right behind the gas station.
Right as I walked in, there were no other patients in the waiting area. Just the receptionist. Let me tell you, they are quite entertaining people. I loved them already! They helped me get registered and in about 10 minutes, marshmallow was already checked in to an exam room.
The doctor, I forgot her name (forgive me), she was excellent. She gave me a lot of information on what’s wrong with my baby and gave me options if I should keep her there for a couple of nights or take her home to treat myself. Knowing that there are expenses involved, I knew I couldn’t afford keeping her there so I decided to treat her myself. The doctor gave us a few minutes to decide what was best for her, but that few minutes took half an hour. She had an emergency come up next door and we understood their protocol. At the end of the night, she gave us medication to feed marshmallow. The instructions are easy to follow and within the next few days, marshmallow is feeling all better.
Because of my first visit here, I’m willing to come back even if I have to drive from the other side of the mountains! Thank you feather and fur for helping marshmallow get better! I’d recommend it to all my feathered and furry friends!
Update ¹¹⁄₁₀
Just wanted to let you know that marshmallow is in a better place now. After she was getting better, she started to get very ill. She couldn’t hold on any longer and has passed on September 14. I wanna thank feather and fur for giving marshmallow a couple more weeks. It really meant a lot to me. I apologize for the late update, I just recently went back looking through my reviews.

Nothing but great things to say about feather and fur! I usually take my Australian Shepherd Kimo to base for his veterinary needs but they only do minor procedures and routine check ups. When it came time to get him neutered, all of the military clinics on the island were not doing surgical procedures so they recommended Feather and Fur. What a great recommendation that turned out to be! Everyone at Feather and Fur is extremely welcoming and they treated Kimo like a king. Dr. Ayling was awesome and he took the time to clearly explain the procedure and also spent time to answer any of our questions. A few days after his procedure, the staff at F & F took the time to call and follow up on Kimo to make sure his recovery was going well. I really appreciated everything that everyone at F & F did for us and Kimo. Sure they may be pricier than other options but, in my opinion, the quality of care your pet gets from them is worth every penny!

My Brown Layer Hen was not well. Thought she was egg bound but it was egg peritonitis. This pet hospital saw her quickly, I didn’t have an appointment and was prepared to wait 1 — 2 hours to be seen. She was more serious than I thought, she was suffering. Dr. Walsh explained her condition and options to me. He was very caring, bless him! I decided to put her down. She was a sweet chicken, before leaving the house, I gave her a warm water soak before taking her in and wrapped her in a towel and softly spoke to her and petted her. She seemed to be calm and didn’t fuss when I put her in my dog carrier. Very relieved I did not prolong her suffering!
Special hurrah to Jul, who was the sole receptionist that afternoon. You worked it girl! You made everyone waiting feel special even though you were juggling so many issues at once!

Our dog almost died from some parasite. She was having liver failure. Took her to feathers and Fur. She had to stay six days on IV and ng tube. She’s now back home recovering well. Thank you for saving her life. Service was great, wait time short for visits, and staff very courteous. You get what you paid for and I think we got the best possible quality care for our dog.

Feather and Fur will always be five stars to me and my family. We started coming here over 16 years ago with our first dog, Marley. He lived to be 15, and when he finally needed to be put down, they were so great.
Now we have two more dogs! A lovely yellow lab named Beauregard, and a sweet munchkin named Murphy. Beau is always getting sick (he’s a sensitive one) and Feather and Fur always makes him better. Neither dog hates the vet! They don’t mind going at all.

I really liked the vet who treated my pooch, having said that I was appalled that the clinic was having a contest to win tickets to SeaLife Park. I said as much to the receptionist who checked us out and all she could do was smile and look embarrassed… I can’t blame her.
Any veterinary facility that would promote the exploitation and mistreatment of Dolphins and any marine life, is a facility that needs to reexamine their core values of caring for animals. By supporting organizations such as this they are promoting mass killings and capture of these amazing creatures such as can be seen in documentaries such as «The Cove,» and «Blackfish.»
Shame on you Feather and Fur! As doctors of Veterinary Medicine you should CARE for and respect all animal life. By choosing to promote SeaLife Park, it speaks volumes for your values as an organization. Perhaps your marketing person should «rethink» this decision.
I unfortunately, will be looking for another veterinary clinic.

My family and I have had many dogs over the years and just as many Veterinarians as well. All of us with pets know how loved and dear to us our furry friends can be. They are part of our family. .. supportive, forgiving, always happy to see you walk through the door, friendly, come when called, comforting, and so loyal. .. all not like kids.
Having a doctor who can share, embrace, and yet empathize the love we feel for our furry family and companions, is an important step. .. and becomes a profound bond between patient, the patient’s family, and the doctor. With praise and heartfelt appreciation, we commend Dr. Suzanne Byrd at Feather and Fur, for the first time in over 40 years, we found a doctor who was helpful and sincere to Nala, our 127 pound pit/​mastiff, and us.
Nala, our little (or not) girl, is normally shy and skittish around strangers and other people. We were so pleased and happy to see that after awhile, Nala grew accustomed to Dr. Byrd’s kind and friendly bedside mannerisms and was the calmest we’ve ever seen her around other people.
The staff and assistants at Feather and Fur are exceptional too. We were treated respectfully. I’ve been to veterinarian’s offices were the staff is cold, aloof, and only friendly if they feel you are a regular patient. Hats off to Feather and Fur and to Dr. Suzanne Byrd… and to their wonderful and accommodating business hours. We can’t just run to a people hospital with our dog, so it’s comforting to know we have a doctor for Nala from 7am — midnight. You can be assured we’ll make Feather and Fur our go to veterinarian we will visit from here on.

We bring all of our pets here, and we always have a great experience! The staff is very animal friendly, they’ll come up to you and your furry friend while you’re waiting to see the vet, and they’ll even pet the animal and offer them treats! They even remember your pets’ names!
One incident that stood out to me though, was when our Boston Terrier was a tiny puppy, he got seemingly sick. Worried sick, we rushed him into Feather and Fur, and they immediately took us. We explained he wasn’t moving much, wasn’t eating much and very lethargic. First, our vet did a test and made sure he didn’t have parvo. To our undying relief, he didn’t. Our vet then explained that it was probably just something he ate that didn’t agree with him, and also, when puppies get shots, it tends to make them woozy. She advised us to put some light corn syrup on a stick and let him lick it. We did that and sure enough, he was fine after that! And he’s grown up into a healthy, strapping furry tank! :)
I highly recommend this vet clinic. They will do their best to always take care of your furry friends. They even have boarding services available, for when you’re out of town, and your pet needs a place to stay!

The awesome staff are always friendly and kind. My dog suffered from a broken nail requiring minor surgery. The staff were able to get me an appointment within 24 hours and once diagnosed had her out of surgery and home within 2 hours. Over all the price seem comparable to other Vet offices (I have never had this particular injury happen to my dogs before). Overall exceptional service and highly knowledgeable staff. A++!

Feather and Fur is a great place to take chinchillas.
When one of chinchillas got really sick, F&F took him in right away. Unfortunately, he couldn’t really be saved (pneumonia), and Dr. Byrd was very sincere and sympathetic, and really helped me through the situation (Even though clearly I was emotionally destroyed).
Fast forward 6 months later, I took my other chinchilla in for making a strange asthmatic sound in the morning. Dr. Ayling was really friendly, seemed very knowledgeable, and confirmed my fear. Luckily, since I brought my chinchilla in the early stages, Dr. Ayling prescribed a medicine that not only my chinchu liked, but ridded him of his wheeze.
Price point to service is very good! The F&F staff was able to squeeze me in between appointments at no extra charge (already starting price cheaper than other places).
Even though it is a far drive for me, I have to highly recommend Feather and Fur, especially if you have Chinchillas.

The place was clean, staff swept up fur regularly while we were there. Dr. Mina provided quick service, great advice, and thoroughly answered all questions and concerns.
Very comforting to know we can go there for emergencies as well as checkups too.
Next time I’m trying the coffee bar. Good stuff!

As I pull into the lot near Safeway a little after 5:30, I wander the parking lot trying to find where the gps has taken me. I walk down the sidewalk with Safeway to my left and cross the street to see what the next set of buildings are. I see a woman outside with a dog, and ask her if she knows where the feather and fur vet is– she tells me it’s on the back of this building, so I walk back to the street and follow it to the back.
First impression is it’s a nice facility, people waiting with their dogs, cats, and birds. Coffee on the side in the waiting room and what appears to be a kids play area. Some parking infringing of the establishment if I would have known…
I’m here for my friends dog because she has a timeline of requirements to be met before moving him to Australia while she has to spend the 30 days in Alaska.
She had made arrangements, so she thought– I arrived in the lobby about a quarter to 6pm and the dark-​blonde haired tech ask me is she a sick pet? I simply say no– my friend should have arranged every thing for he, him. A little confused, as I had just checked in with the receptionist and he had seemed to have sent a clipboard somewhere. I politely say no, I had already checked in.
Then as I waited in the reception room as all the other clients get lead to waiting rooms. Another client proceeds to call on the phone. I overhear the receptionist (male) say something to the other receptionist (female) about the person (female) just called, then proceed to deliberately not take the call.
Appointment was scheduled for 6pm. Went to a patient room a little after 6 pm. The dark blonde haired tech seems to be attempting to continue on with the appointment, again proceeds to call he a she dog…
A little concerned there might have been a switcheroo with the information I start to ask the tech some questions as to what is supposed to be going on in this appointment? Now very concerned at this point because I promised my friend I’d make sure everything was taken care of that needed to be done for moving her dog to Australia — I ask what’s going on, since my friend had said she had gone over all this with the vet multiple times before she left & I should have to ask or say anything– just bring her dog in.
The tech starts to get short with me for asking confirmatory questions then I tell her I’m in no rush I just want to ensure I get everything done right. She says she was just trying to ‘help’ me get out of there sooner but if I don’t want to let her do her job I can just wait there for the vet!
Still sitting in the patient room as 7pm approaches… Starting to feel abandoned and unsure if anyone is even going to check what’s going on…
Finally get to see the vet. Dr. Kirk Ayling. A slight redeeming moment as he seems apathetic and understanding– more knowledgeable about the situation and more reassuring that things are going as planned. The tech suddenly sweetens up now the vet is there with her…
Leave the vet shortly after 7:10… 10 minutes of vet, an hour late… I understand emergencies come up but seriously with 2 receptionists there someone could have called to let me know… Or even have given me a time estimate while I was waiting…
Only redeeming quality was the vet himself, or I would have given 1 star.
You should not have to stress about the non-​communication in the vets office with all the vet-​assisting people. Doing anything for a pet is already stress enough!

Always a good experience at Feather and Fur. They were recommended to us when we adopted from the SPCA. Staff was friendly and service was great.
They got a little too expensive for us plus we moved from Kaneohe to Ewa Beach and made the decision to try a different vet much closer to us. If I lived on the Windward side, there is a great possibility this would have continued to be my vet.

Well I had a little chicken and she wouldn’t use her leg
so I poured some water up and down her leg
And the little chicken hollered and the little chicken begged
And the gosh darn chicken said «FIX MY LEG!»
I had no idea where to take my chicken to fix her leg. I thought they might laugh at me if I asked them to look at my chicken. (I mean really, it’s a chicken!) But right from the moment Jul answered the phone, she put me at ease and made me feel totally comfortable asking questions about a broken chicken leg. Thank you Jul for setting me up with a same-​day appointment and thank you to Dr. Walsh and staff for the excellent customer service and professional visit!!!
So like their name says, they do treat birds and furry friends. My chicken went nuts seeing all the poodles and big dogs in the waiting room, so if you do bring a chicken here, make sure you keep them contained.
