PATH Station – Exchange Place

Third world conditions. There’s always something wrong with this station. Broken escalators that take more than a year to fix. Escalators that stop working right when you’re about to step on and instead you have to walk up 6 flights of stairs. Delays. Weird smells. Weird people.

I have a few bad things to say about this station, granted its 100X better than any station in the NYC Metro subways system, it still blows. The escalators are always out causing you to climb a Mt. Fuji amount of stairs and then arrive to work sweaty as hell. the machines you use to get a smart card are always broke, not to mention are really inconsistent with reading credit cards.

Path in NJ is always cleaner than NYC subways. This is a quick, convenient station. I believe it is the last one before the World Trade Center stop in NYC, where you will have to get off or return back to the New Jersey side. The station is clean, but doesn’t offer anything but a few vending machines to buy more PATH /​Metrocards.

Got me from A to B alive. I think that deserves at least 4 stars.

This station is very hit-​or-​miss. Hurricane Sandy definitely left a long-​lasting effect on the elevators. After a big rain storm, there’s an over 50% chance that at least one elevator will stop working.
There are good places to grab coffee or breakfast before you hop onto the PATH. There’s a Starbucks in the same plaza, and an Au Bön Pain on Montgomery.
It would be great if we could get some cell service or wifi at this station as we wait for the train. Where’s the suggestion box?

This is by far the worst major transit stop in the entire Greater New York area. There are no signs, anywhere. About anything. Unless you’re already in the know, you’ll have to ask other commuters or just wait till the trains arrive and act quick.
Need to purchase tickets? You had better have exact change AND a debit/​credit card on you at all times because it’s a total crap shoot on what their ticket machines WON’T be accepting on any given day. If you would like to buy a refillable Smart Link card, you NEED $ 5, CASH. No change, no debit/​credit, and no exceptions.
In addition to all the pleasantries involved in something as simple as giving this horrid excuse for mass-​transit your money, you play Russian roulette every-​time you actually try to get down to the mezzanine level. There are two routes one may take: an elevator or escalator (there is also a stairwell next to the escalator, but unless you are Rocky Balboa, you should definitely avoid that). The escalator is out of commission almost literally every other day, and it’s a matter of time until those two elevators burst into flames because it’s the only other viable entrance for anyone who’s not an Olympic hurdler.
All the while, the police here think that they are still in NYC and they will inspect your bags if you are brown.
Take the bus if possible, or use the Newport line. The whole Newark-​WTC line is a joke. It’s ALWAYS running on delays because of mechanical errors. It’s appalling that someone actually manages this system. I would’ve expected this debacle to be from the SEPTA in Philly, not in an area with such heralded methods of transit.
Take your money elsewhere.

Abysmal signposting. There is one temporary sign at the bottom of the escalators which tells you which platform to go to for which direction.
There is nothing at the bottom of the elevator which tells you which platform to go to.
There is NOT EVEN A SIGN ON THE PLATFORM which tells you the direction of trains arriving at the platform.
Those TV screens they’ve got hanging from the ceiling, do they contain useful information about platforms and upcoming train arrivals? Hell no! That would be far too helpful. Instead they are used to bring you up-​to-​the-​minute coverage of what Kim Kardashian’s cat was up to last week. Thanks for that!

Stop here one time to go to hoboken Nj to transfer to another path train… the station is ok…
