Pavonia – Newport Path Station

Only thing i have a problem is that T-​mobile doesn’t have signal inside the station.

So, I’ll tender a review from the first non-​JC resident. For context, I’ve used PATH over the years to get into and out of NYC — largely for work, as my office is in Morristown and I have clients in the city. Most of my experience with PATH stations has been the station in Newark, Newport, WTC, and 33^rd Street.
I was surprised to read local residents panning the Newport station. The walk is no longer than what is required at Newark’s Penn Station, or really even WTC … except that WTC has a bank of very long escalators to temper the walk required, a bit. The smell is not especially different from any of the subway stations I’ve visited in NYC [or most other cities, really].
This is not a Ritz Carlton. It is not ultra-​modern space with super sleek lines, lots of glass, and shinny metal, and nicely perfumed. And, neither are most other public transit stations. It does serve the PATH network well. And, I’d much rather fight this battle than any of the tunnels or the GWB, only to then have to find parking that deprives me of more enjoyable ways to spend my money.
I feel safe here. There is seating for those who choose. I believe that there is an elevator — though never have ridden it. I typically park in the Newport Mall parking lot — not especially close, but it’ll work.

Pavonia-​Newport PATH Station needs improvement. Its my least favorite station but it serves it purpose. Its located in a great location and I hope eventually this station looks as good on the inside as it does on the outside.

PATH = Pathetic Attempt at Transporting Humans.
This station is a complete dump and the PA doesn’t seem to care. There are always something nasty dripping from the ceilings and at the far end it looks like the swamp of Dagobah in Star Wars. Since it’s the only way in and out of the city, we have no choice but to use it.

Writing reviews for these kinds of places is always weird. Who’s exactly the audience, and what would they actually want to know?
Chances are that if you use this PATH station, you either live or work in Newport, in which case it’s not like you’ll choose a different station (though, honestly, on nice days, I’ll just walk along the waterfront to the Hoboken PATH station to avoid Newport)
Other general notes:
1) The walk from the entrance of the station to the actual platform is non-​trivially long. Keep that mind the next time Google maps estimates how long it takes for you to get from your apartment/​office to the station for the next train (especially relevant on late nights/​weekends)
2) It’s par for the course that PATH station platforms smell bad (you’re in NJ). But Newport, especially the areas near the deep end where the tiles transmogrify into a mixture of mildew, rust, and rotted ceramic, is especially fetid.
3) That said, it’s kind of sweet that there are trains to both 33^rd St. and WTC (except on late nights and weekends). Options baby!
