Himalayan Kitchen

I read others’ reviews more often than writing one on here. But I am disappointed about this place enough to write one now. We have been here twice in the past 6 months, but both times the food was just meh, nothing really memorable.
The male server that had our table this past weekend was distracted at best. At ordering, I told him twice we want the free naan option (as promoted on this site), and at the end he still charged us with the naan. He was also very standoffish when we asked about the different dishes at ordering and didn’t come by to ask us how we were doing or refill water glasses during the meal.
For the prices we paid, other places such as Maharani or Da Spot are much better in taste and service.

HK keeps trying and obviously has a very dedicated local following but service lags, food quality is average and dining experience is lowered by those. Took over 20 minutes to get the orders in and then 30 minutes latter to be advised there was no tofu (come on, no tofu on Oahu!!!) and then when the orders showed one was missing, Then the Roti was a no show only to be told there was none – no Roti!!!
What we did get was OK, not exceptional, Maharani and others are much better.

Went for dinner yesterday. For a weds night it was pretty busy. We got there at about 7pm, there were a few tables already occupied.
We walked up the stairs, the front desk was hard to find. I’d say it’s in the middle of the restaurant. A little tricky if it was your first time, which it was for us.
We sat and were greeted and given water. After a few mins our server came over, we didn’t get his name. We started to give our order when he was distracted by our rocking table. He took some time trying to fix it. But the table was obviously not going to be fixed so we told him it was ok.
I tried to ask done questions, but it seemed like he didn’t hear me or was distracted. Finally we got our order in. And then waited.
I would say it took about fifteen mins for our salad to come out. I think the kitchen was busy since other tables sat right before us and right after.
The house dressing made with yogurt and cilantro was amazing! Made the salad complete.
We order lamb vindaloo and another chicken dish the server recommended for a spicy dish. We also got garlic naan, fried naan, and a bowl of rice.
I would recommend not going here if you are starving. Because the hot dishes came even slower than our salad. But when it did come they were delicious and in a good portion size. The spiciness was perfect as well, not too hot.
When we finished our meal, we had to ask two different people twice for boxes and our check. At last I think the manger came over with the check and he did apologize.
Summary:
Food– Great, wold go back for more
Service– Friendly-​ish, slow, I think he needed a smaller section
Atmosphere– so cute and quaint, love the ambience
I would recommend, but only if not starving or in a rush

The staff and food are top notch. The vindaloo is real good. This is a BYOB place, so if you want beer or wine with your meal you should bring it.

I went with a group to celebrate my engagement. We had a table on the patio which was intimate and perfect for our group. We got the special of the night with lamb and the momo. Both were excellent. The sauce on the momo was great. The special was very good. The restaurant doesn’t serve alcohol, but is BYOB which made everything better. Overall this place was perfect for celebrating our special moment.

My husband and I found this gem and absolutely loved the vibe and food here. Service was good and food was on point! They have indoor and outdoor seating and space available to host private parties. There is a huge parking lot nearby.

I went to this restaurant tonight with my husband and it was a very bad experience!!! For the first time I stop to eat after the appetizer it was the only eatable thing The samosas not great but good enough to eat it.
For the entrees I took the fish madras and the fish was over cook and my husband took the chicken curry it was just ok.
But for the naan bread it was the worst. I found black hair in my bread.
I’m not picky but went I go eat at the restaurant I don’t want to think hair or insects in my plate !!!

The ac or the ventilation was so dirty. It was not great to eat in front of that.

Pretty amazing. We had true friends allergic to peppers but they cook as you wish so it was perfect. Service was cool. Came back on ¹²⁄₂₂ and it was very über good. They normal do not serve hot after dinner drinks like coffee but the heart make a wonderful India coffee to give me the extra personal touch. Loved it.

I really loved this place. Went there last Tuesday evening and it was absolutely stunning. Really loved the atmosphere of the place and sat out on the lanai. Service was really good. I ordered some kind of lamb curry that completely blew my socks off! The hotness was mild and perfect, the flavor was like nothing I’ve ever experienced, and the lamb meat was deliciously tender and delicious. I only give 4 stars because they were out of desserts and they aren’t open for lunch. The open patio upstairs would probably make for a great party and its BYOB so don’t forget to hit up Tamuras on your way over.

The food was very good. The male waiter was a bit lost but the owner provided the best service. The lady waiter was also good.
The biryani was awesome. The vegetable dish was average. Overall the food was good.

Let me begin by saying I was born and raised in Nepal and that Himalayan kitchen isn’t even close to bringing the authentic Nepali taste in the dishes they serve. I would like to ask the owner who I’ve noticed writes a lot of apology replies to bad reviews– name one place in Kathmandu that serves chicken tikka smothered in tangy tomato gravy as chicken chilly?
Chicken momo in Nepal is ten thousand times better than the cold, poorly wrapped dumplings they serve. Even something as common as chicken tikka masala only tasted of tangy burnt tomato gravy. This was my second time here and I wish I hadn’t came back. I watched my server walk over to the table with his finger dipped in the food. Horrible service was just a cherry on top.
I would really like to see this restaurant step up their game but its only getting worse. Did I mention the unfair prices??? I hate bashing a Nepali restaurant but this one deserves it for how bad my experience has been both times.

Himalayan Kitchen is one of those sleeper restaurants. No one really talks about it but then when you experience it, it is pretty darn awesome. I do have to disclaim that I am no connoisseur of Nepali and Indian food.
Near Seed restaurant, go up the stairs and you will find yourself in an large oasis that is Himalayan Kitchen. There are outside tables under string lighting and also inside spots. It would be a perfect spot for a private party.
The service is impeccable. The staff is extremely professional, friendly and helpful. They helped us choose from the menu because it was all new to me! We ordered the sampler appetizer platter, garlic naan, fish stew and chicken curry. I can’t remember which curry but it was the one with tomatoes, onion and coconut milk. You can order your food to your spicy-​ness liking.
The sampler was good-​the chicken was tender, the fried things (sorry I am not helpful) were nice and crunchy. The garlic naan was amazing. Fellow Unilocalers are right-​soft, moist, garlic flavored. I mean I could eat a vat of that stuff. The stew and curries were also very good. Great creaminess, generous pieces of chicken/​fish, with good flavoring. Be sure to order the rice on the side.
I thought the entrees were a little expensive. My curry came in a decent size bowl and was $ 16 without rice. No sides. Luckily they always have coupons/​promotions/​etc so it gets a little more reasonable.
Himalayan Kitchen is a legit player in the Indian food restaurant business.

Ordered take out got home found huge ball of steel wool in my curry… thanks almost choked

This place is very out of the way located in a small strip mall. We were very impressed with the selection of food and they had a lot of variety of curries and meats. We decided on the veggie momo, lamb curry, chicken tikka and chicken vindaloo. I got the lamb in SPICY and we all thought it might be too much but it was just perfect. We also got 3 servings of rice and 2 nann. For 3 adults, I thought it was the perfect amount of food. We did have a little leftover but it was probably because we indulged on too much water. Great place, very quiet and service was pleasant.

This is my second time here, but the first time for my fiancé. Let’s just say we’ll be back.
I ordered Saag Madras, I was craving for some coconut curry that would remind me of my time in Sri Lanka. It did not fail. The chicken was perfect and the spicy level was nice *ordered it Spicy*
My hunny got Chicken Vindaloo. He says it was very good. It was spicy, but not too much. He lived the tomato based sauce *ordered it spicy*
we opted for naan and roti instead of rice. My fiancé loved the naan. I would say that it was very delicious! I wanted some while wheat, so I primarily ate the roti.
it was pretty empty inside, but I have to say that I don’t think that the food is the cause. It was a Monday night, so maybe families decided to eat in.
Great for parties or intimate dates!

While never quite outstanding when it comes to Indian cuisine this place has been convenient. This place has been hovering between 2 – 3 stars for me for quite some time but tonight’s experience put the final nail in the coffin.
Previous visits have resulted in slow service, forgotten items ordered and semi-​bland food. Only once were we asked (in over 4 visits) how spicy we wanted our food. Without being asked this and making it medium or higher in spice, the dishes are pretty bland.
Tonight though, we ordered takeout and came home to discover a roach steamed to death in our order of rice. Clearly visible through the clear plastic container, this was just plain disgusting.
I’m afraid of what else might have been simmering in our dishes and possibly yours.
We noticed small roaches before while dining in, chalked it up to open air dining. Inside our food though, that’s the kiss of death.

The restaurant reminds me of ones in Nepal. The food — delicious!
I tried to order more Nepali than Indian dishes. We had Papad, garlic naan, chicken momo, spring roll, chicken tikka, chicken chili, lamb chow chow and Nepali dal. Everything was so flavorful and even the mild had a little heat to it (ordered mild because we had some guests who aren’t into spicy food.) The sauce that comes with the tikka is so yummy — kind of like the sauce for Chinese cold ginger chicken but with garlic in it.
The service was great and we enjoyed talking to our waiter from Kathmandu.
I wish I lived closer and then I would come all the time!

This time… it was pretty great. You see, our family came here two years ago and it was memorable– not in a good way. We had waited an hour and a half for all of our food to come, service was poor and ambiance looked so-​so, environment was a little dirty.
Fast forward two years and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. My Very dear friend and I ordered:
Chicken tikka masala
Veggie samosa
Veggie curry dish
Rice
Naan with spinach
Wow! Very good! The flavors were tremendously delectable and the service was close to an A! That in itself was a lot of food to order between us, but we genuinely enjoyed it, especially with the bottle of wine we brought in– with no cork fee! Double Yummo!!!
After two hours there we left because a friendly roach slowly started crawling down the wall next to my friend… we don’t need that kind of company. Other then that, the food and service was better than my first time there… maybe I will do take out for my family!

The tandoor mix grill is excellent and you must not skip the vegetable samosa’s or the himalayan naan. The naan was really really exceptional! We also enjoyed the chicken tikka masala and aloo gobi.
Oh, it’s also BYOB.
Skip the dal mahkani and the saag with potato.
The service was just ok. We threw them off (I think) by asking to sit inside and it took quite a few of them to scramble and get a table ready (even though the inside dining room was empty).

This place could be a lot better if service was more consistent and if the restaurant was a little better maintained. Both times I’ve gone, the tables and dining areas just felt a bit… unkept. The restaurant occupies a very cute space and offers outdoor dining options, and it is BYOB. There’s even a cute little gazebo for a larger party. But it’s filled with ants, the silverware was dirty, and last time we sat here, the ground was littered with bottle caps. It was a weekday, and we came in as lunch started. Meaning the trash was left from the night before and no one even cared to sweep it up. So much potential but alas. Needs work.
This most recent time, our waiter started off great. And slowly went downhill. We asked some questions about the menu, because none of us are that familiar with the dishes. He seemed annoyed and we hardly saw him the rest of the evening. And the garlic naan that we ordered with our appetizer took 50 minutes (yes, almost a damn hour) to come. What was left of our curries were cold and so was our rice by the time it appeared. The regular naan here are very small and not worth it. The stuffed ones are a bit better, but still not worth their price tag in my opinion. The waitress and a busboy were way more helpful, since our waiter was nowhere to be seen. Tables next to us got seated and sat for like, 20 minutes… with no service. They literally had to flag someone else down to order because the waiter decided to ignore them also.
Anyway, maybe they are short staffed but I’d opt for take-​out instead. The food is actually very tasty and just about everyone enjoys a casual BYOB venue… so it’s just a shame that the entire experience can’t be consistently up to par.
