History

Established in 1996.

I was hired to photograph screaming babies and their parents at a fast paced professional studio in 1992. By the time I graduated from UCSC, I was running the studio. In 1996 I decided it was time to step out on my own. Starting in the attic of a funky Santa Cruz Victorian, my business has blossomed to what it is today.

I have been creating images since my childhood in Alaska. My Mother bought me a Kodak 126 Instamatic when I was six years old just in time for my first big adventure — a safari in Africa. I still remember taking those photos of lions, monkeys, zebras and elephants knowing that I was preserving a moment in time. Fast forward 30+ years and today I am still recording memories to share. I love capturing images of places and people I have come in contact with. As a graduate of the University of California at Santa Cruz I studied Art and Anthropology. My work has been published Nationally and Internationally in magazines, catalogs, newspapers, fine art galleries, home and office walls, and online. My homeless cat photos have been used in fund raising for Project Bay Cat, and I have volunteered my time and services to teach my craft as well. I am grateful to have found a passion in photography, and I hope that you will have a chance to include me on your next project

An absolute rockstar. I have had so many photos taken by Rob and I’m always excited about the results. His website is horrible… but his photos are wonderful. I’ve also had many friends go to him for weddings, corporate gigs (he did all of my work when I was at Genentech and people would tell me that his group photos were the best photos they had of themselves and some of his photos even ended up on their mantle). Oh… and he always gets rid of my «spots.» Hey… everyone needs a little touchup sometimes. ;-)

Robert (and his wonderful girlfriend Melissa) shot my very intimate ceremony on half moon bay beach and I couldn’t be any more pleased with their work. He was friendly and attentive with a great eye. He really made my special day all the more special. I couldn’t have asked for a greater photographer to capture such a special moment in my life. Robert is a a great photographer and has an expertly touch with people. He makes everyone feel welcome and brings out the best in everyone.
He makes you feel alright about the photographing experience and truly brings out a natural feel in everything that he touches. A superb person who’s touch makes for an optimum experience. He doesn’t try to rush a shoot and has superb confidence in each group shot he takes.

This guy is GREAT! I wanted some photos taken that were out of the ordinary. I wanted rock star lighting, fog machines and an avant garde/​goth/​punk theme. Robert was amazing. He loved the idea and took some amazing shots. I am soooo happy! When I got there, I was chagrined to realize I’d forgotten to dye my hair a weird red. The guy magically produces bright red hair dye. The makeup artist, Amy Sadek, was wonderful and helped to create a few different looks. With Robert’s talent and creativity, the photos came out beyond my expectations. Plus Robert makes you feel so comfortable. I felt like I’d known him a long time after only a few minutes. And I love his cat, Sylvia, who oversaw the shoot. And let me tell you, I was nervous and afraid I would come off looking like a dork and Rob made me look like a rock star. I love this guy!!! If you have your photos done, make sure you hire Amy Sadek to do your makeup. She is amazing, too. And Amy and Robert work so well together. A super positive experience for someone who hates having their picture taken. Plus finding someone so responsible and upbeat and funny was icing on the cake. Hire this man. You won’t regret it.

Robert is only the BEST photographer in the Bay Area. I’ve hired him for almost every project I’ve had in the Bay Area over the last few years and would gladly fly him any where in the world to shoot for me!
I think his work is genius and I think he’s maybe one of the nicest, generous, lovely people I’ve ever worked with!
Barbutti (as our Kids at Kid’s Camp call him) is the BEST, hands down!
I first met him when we did a Live Concert at the Great American Music Hall. He was a wonderful person, but I wondered how his photography would turn out. Without me even having to ask, he sent me an entire disc within days and I was SO impressed with his photography!

Robert’s work adorns almost every wall in my home. I hired him to shoot for a show my kids were performing in. The chosen shots were made into black and white poster sizes, and my home looks like a gallery showcase of professional musicians, but they’re my kids! Those photos are my most prized and meaningful possessions. If given only one thing to grab on the way out of the house burning down, it would be those photos.

Go to Robert Barbutti’s website and you’ll understand his gifts. I was part of a recent comedy special with 3 other comics at The Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. He shot us in performance from the balcony, the wings and the floor. It’s not easy to get flattering shots of comics while we’re yakking and mugging. But Robert had photographic comic timing. I have several great shots in performance that I will use. Robert should work for the Chronicle. oops I forgot newspapers are buh bye.
Robert then had to photograph the four of us hyperactive types and got us all focused for some ace portraits, great angles, great ideas.
Dealing with him that night and ever since has been a pleasure and I would jump at the chance at another photo session with him.

we used rob’s services while i was working for a pharma comp in Palo alto. He came in and took a bunch of pictures for our upcoming national sales meeting and he was great! He used his creativity and was able to create some great posters, pictures etc for us (of which i still have!). I also brought robert into our office on several occasions and had him take a bunch of «action» shots so i could create a slideshow… it was a joy to work with and i would recommend him to anyone.

Robert is AMAZING!!! I moved to San Fran from Los Angeles and was very particular about choosing who I wanted to create a new modeling portfolio for me along with comp cards and headshots. Robert is such a great guy and makes you feel very comfortable. He is extremely professional but funny as hell! He knows the business well and he knows how to shoot you at just the right angle and lighting to make you look FABULOUS! Coming from LA there is a lot of competition with great photographers but Robert is by far the BEST that I have ever worked with.

Robert did a photo shoot recently for my son for his model portfolio. There are certainly many talented photographers to choose from. What makes Robert a cut above is his ability to connect with people — to be there for them not only during, but after, the photo shoot.
I called Robert after seeing his web site on SF Casting. I wanted someone «good with children»…and Robert is certainly good with people — period. He is both a master technician and a outstanding creative director. We ended up with so many good shots I couldn’t decide which ones to use ! I want them all ! Robert guided me in selecting which ones would be suitable for headshots, and which ones for zed cards. I always say, the true mark of a professional, is someone who will be there for you. I highly recommend Robert. He’s an incredibly gifted photographer who captures emotions, beauty, and once-​in-​a-​lifetime moments in powerful ways. I also appreciate his professionalism and patience — he is always on time, very thorough, and is willing to go to great lengths to get just the right shot (including climbing on railings and lying on the ground!) As a magazine writer, I’ve had him take shots to accompany my articles, and his photos always beautifully complement my words. I’m on the board of Homeless Cat Network and run a program called Project Bay Cat, and as a fund raiser, we sold Robert’s evocative and incredibly moving photos feral cats. It was a highly successful show that simply blew attendees away — the photos were so stunning that we even sold prints to «dog people» who swore they didn’t even like cats. Robert has a rare talent!
