History

Established in 1963.

Al Fraschieri started Compare Heating in September of 1963 in Walnut Creek, CA. As the quality of Compare’s work became known around the local construction industry, they got the support and referrals of local contractors. Al added air conditioning and a service department to his list of services in 1968. Since day one quality and attention to detail was of great importance to Compare Heating & Air Conditioning. This motto allowed Compare Heating & Air Conditioning to develop a loyal customer base. In order to maintain their high level of excellence, Al’s son Mark and daughter Jayne joined the Compare team after finishing their continued education. Al’s son-​in-​law Ralph also became part of Compare Heating & Air Conditioning shortly after. Compare Heating & Air Conditioning is truly a family run business.

Mark started at Compare when he was just 10 years old cleaning up the shop. As Mark grew up working along side his Dad, he decided that he would follow in his father’s footsteps. After graduating from California State University, Chico Mark joined Compare in 1976. He began by learning the trade out in the field and attending industry classes to keep up to date on the latest HVAC technology. As of today, Mark is the President of Compare and is still maintaining the work ethic and quality of work that his father instilled in 1963.

We sought out Compare having seen them reviewed (top rated) in Bay Area Consumers Checkbook (a local version of Consumers Reports, check it out). Our first job with Compare was about 2 years ago, where they checked and sealed all of our heating duct work, and cleaned/​evaluated our furnace. This was done professionally, expeditiously, at a great price and with no hassles and great results. We then contacted Compare for a furnace replacement for our 25 year old unit, as well as the addition of a new zone for upstairs. Their price was the best among all bidders, and with the energy efficiency incentive program that Mark (Compare’s owner) referred us to, we got the furnace replaced at the best possible cost, and under floor insulation at virtually no cost after the program rebate. Mark and team have been back to help us program the thermostat and fine tune the furnace settings, and we can’t recommend them highly enough. You will be pleased to deal with Mark and Compare.

I called Compare because my vents in my master bedroom and master bath were not blowing any air out of them. Mark came over and immediately recognized the problem and gave me a reasonable estimate to repair the problem. His technician arrived this morning and took care of the issues in a couple of hours. His technician was professional, knowledgeable, friendly, neat, very mindful of our cat and just a great guy. You can tell the difference the first day. The bedroom is cooler and does not have that stuffy feeling. I highly recommend them. Thanks Mark!

Compare just installed central air conditioning at our house and we are quite impressed by the price, friendliness, and efficiency. Mark helped us understand the challenges with the electrical and ducting so there were no surprises. The whole experience was easy and quick. We just passed inspection with flying colors. Our furnace works better because of the attention they paid to the duct work. We highly recommend them.

Compare was pretty responsive and helpful when I first called and organized for Mark to come out to give me an estimate for a whole new central air system in an old house that had no existing ductwork. He came out and seemed pretty negative about the whole thing, there were lots of barriers to getting the system in. Long story short, I never got an estimate and never heard from him again despite leaving a voicemail and sending emails. I thought that was very unprofessional. If he didn’t want to do the job for whatever reason, I wish he would have just told me that rather than ignoring my call and emails.

I am completely satisfied with Compare’s work and service. I specifically requested Gilbert to check my furnace and replace the filter because he did such a thorough and careful job last year. He identified and fixed a problem that will allow long term use of this furnace which was poorly installed by a different company. Also, I was told by a different company that the furnace was leaking water, rusting and should be replaced soon (after only 6 years of use). Gilbert fixed the leak, stabilized the rust and restored my confidence in both the furnace and a person and company that does careful work and doesn’t inflate problems. So I will continue to use Compare and request Gilbert. Very satisfied. Also, service was prompt and on time. This review was written last year. This year the technician who came out to help with a problem was Dustin. He also did excellent work, resolving a problem thoroughly and carefully. Compare does excellent work at fair prices. I will definitely continue to use and recommend them.

Ralph and his team did a great job installing our HVAC system five years ago. After all that time everything has worked perfectly until the other night when our thermostat lost power. We called Ralph on his cell in the evening after work and in addition to remembering our house and system he verbally walked me through finding the source of the problem which allowed me to make a simple fuse replacement with no problems. Awesome customer service! Highly recommended.

After 30 years, I decided this was the year to install a new heater for my home. I obtained two estimates each of which were for Carrier Furnaces, and therefore comparable.. I chose Compare Heating because of the recommendation of others whom I trust, because of the great price and their responsiveness in the estimate process in meeting my needs. I was not disappointed. They were attentive to details, clean, careful, provided good explanations of the thermostat’s workings, and thorough. They proactively scheduled the «HERS» inspection while the work was being done so that I did not have to set aside more time for another appointment. The HERS inspector noted that Compare does an excellent job and gets it right. The City inspector who signed off on my permit used Compare to install two heaters in his father’s home. These unsolicited comments from professionals validated that I made a great choice in using this heating company.

I had several companies come out and look at my house. It turns out I needed to have the majority of the duct work replaced. Most companies didn’t want to deal with this situation since it is not high profit scenario. A couple even tried to sell me a new furnace claiming that would fix the situation.
Mark came out and after about 30 minutes of walking around the house he said «I can help you». He and his guys spent a solid 5 days running new ducts in the house and rebuilding the furnace closet. There’s no way he could have made much money on this deal but told me he would do it because he knew my house was miserably hot and he wanted to make it more comfortable.
At the end of another hot summer, I can say that the house is much more comfortable. His company is solid, the workers are polite and seem happy and he stands behind his work. The way he handles business is «old school» and I’d highly recommend them.

WOW is all I have to say. Very ethical & reputable!
I’ve had 4 HVAC companies come out and they all told me the same thing, I need to spend $ 18-​$ 23K to redo my entire freon outdated system in my entire house. That was ridiculous! Thank goodness I called these guys, Mark who came out was the nicest person. I told him that we don’t wanto to put all this $ into my system and we just wanted it fixed for now. He spent about ½ hour looking things over. Everything we were told that was «Broken» or «Ready to Die», he said were fine. The reason why things were working because of minor fixes and repairs, about $ 1000 worth of repairs.
When/​If my entire system fails and I really have to replace the whole thing, I’m not giving anyone else my money. I will only call Mark!

Compare Heating & Air Conditioning dismantled and rebuilt the entire duct system at my house. Turns out raccoons had stolen all the fiberglass insulation from the ducts. Having crawled under the house a few times I noticed the terrible condition the ducts were in. They were highly recommended to me by a contractor who has seen his work.
They did an incredible job, neatly, conscientiously, and fast (only took them 2 days to dismantle, clean the area, and rebuild the system.) The difference in the heating of the house, particularly in the 2 rooms that required the longest ducts is impressive. The crew was polite, professional, and very aware of keeping the traffic area clean. The cost was very reasonable. The follow-​up inspection a few days later passed with flying colors. Very impressed with this company. I will call them back to check my air conditioning unit in the spring.

Compare has been servicing our HVAC units at a commercial building for the past 16 years. In 2010, I asked for a quote to add an additional unit to the building. I received a verbal quote «not to exceed» $ 15,000. I had had a long relationship with them and took them at their word to honor that quote. It took them over a year to finally bill me after job completion and then they billed me approximately $ 17,500. I protested but was told that they had «run into some unforseen problems» with the installation which added to the cost. I deeply regreted that I had been so trusting and not gotten a written quote to back up the verbal one.
In addition, we have had a service agreement with them to service our HVAC units quarterly. They did this for several years and then in the past couple of years, service began to completely deteriorate and become very spotty. They only came out once last year (in April) and so far this year (October 2013), they have only been out once (again, in April). There have been no calls and no explanations. It’s almost as if they have gone out of business without telling me. I have hired another company to service our units and told Compare that their services are no longer required.
From the way I was over billed for the installation of the new unit and they way they have let our service agreement go, I consider them to be both unethical as well as unreliable.

After reading Bay Area checkbook. We knew since we had been using this company to repair our old system. This was the right company.
The men installing the system are neat, professional and great. We couldn’t be happier that we picked Compare Heating.

Nicest guy. Twice in my lifetime had catastrophic AC issue and twice he walked me through fixing it on the phone. I THOUGHT I had tried everything before calling him but hey, I’m no handy person. His advice was given kindly and with some refreshing humor. He can be sure I’ll call him when I need to upgrade!

So the owner of the company called me the other day to leave me a message regarding my review on Unilocal.He reminded me that in the summer, he warned me that it would get really busy during the winter so I should have him do the entire project. Well, the problem was that I had only enough money at the time to take care of the most essential (asbestos removal and containment), rather than the luxury (enlarging air ducts and installing a new one.)
So, I am going to give the company an additional star for «ok» because during the summer, Mark was very responsive and got me an estimate quickly and really worked hard to get the asbestos out quickly. He is also very knowledgeable because of his years of experience.
Again, reasons why I will not give more than 3 stars is because I had called multiple times and left messages with the office manager and I got no responses. I even sent him an email. As busy as anyone can be, all it takes is about 2 minutes to tell me that you received my message, you are extremely busy and here are some other companies that will assist my needs.
Would I recommend this company? Yes, because they know their stuff. But, I will be using another company just because there are plenty of other hard working companies in the central contra costa area.

We started to have trouble with our air conditioner the middle of June. At that time we had a local company come out to diagnose the problem (which was low freon) and were sold 2.5 pounds that «should do it». We figured maybe it was low since we didn’t know the last time it was serviced.
Well here we are about 6 weeks later and the A/​C wasn’t cooling, AGAIN. We went back to the local company, they came out (another diagnostic fee) and said there was assuredly a leak. The only option, replace the whole unit. During these tough times that was not an option for us.

The search returned Compare Heating and A/​C with 5 stars on Unilocal!After reading the customer reviews I felt confident in scheduling them to come out and diagnose the problem/​give a second opinion. I am SO happy I did!
In the end I had more questions answered, an AFFORDABLE solution other than a unit replacement and was given accurate information — all things the «local company» never gave me.
Thank you Terry for your awesome service, friendly and professional attitude, being on time and giving me answers I felt I could trust. I would recommend Compare to anyone and will be a return customer for sure (although I hope not in the near future, wink-​wink)!!

While searching for a local A/​C co. I saw the video ad and thought «I recognize that guy». Turns out I met Mark at a friends Christmas party a few years back. I called, Mark answered, said he’d see if he could get someone free-​ed up that day.
A few hours later Terry showed up to check my noisy A/​C unit. He had all the required A/​C diagnostic gadgets and knew how to use them.
Turns out I had a loose valve and needed 2 pounds of freon. Terry said the unit was in good shape and I should have it checked in a couple of years.
