Really great customer service.
Went in randomly because I have been looking for a new pair of frames and was impressed with how nice and friendly their service was. Yes, they are in the service industry and trying to make a sale. So I get it, it’s their job to be friendly. None the less, genuine or self-​concerned the outward appearance was positive. I was helped for quite a while choosing many different frames. At the end of it all I wanted to browse other stores to get more options and did not buy a frame there. I was not pressured nor felt like they were disappointed when I left. Often a sales rep will get irritated when they spend a lot of time with you and they do not get the sale. I did not feel this. I will be back to get the frames I liked from this place.

I’ve been using Fred Slater & Associates for about 5 years now, and I am consistently floored by the quality of customer service, friendliness of the staff, and willingness to «go the extra mile» to ensure satisfaction. Though I’m only writing this 5-​star review now, please consider it retroactive for the duration of my patronage.
I’m not going to waste any talking about eye health other than to say Dr. Chi is top-​notch, as are all staff members.
What I will talk about instead is eyeglass selection, which is always difficult for me. I consider myself to be a stylish but not fashionable person. I like items of clothing and accessories that are a little over-​the-​top without being totally crazy, and my freakishly long eyelashes and unusually large head are additional complicating factors. Every two years when my VSP frame benefit resets, I embark on a day-​/​week-​/​month-​long search for something that fits where I am with my personal style.
This year I took weeks to select a gorgeous Cole Haan frame (from among multiple frames I had them special order for me), but when they applied my prescription to the glasses, my eyelashes continually wiped and soiled my lenses. I was exceptionally grateful when they offered to eat the cost of the lenses and let me choose another frame that worked better!
My favorite specialist in the joint — April — helped me pick out my new pair. Universal fit (for my eyelashes), guitar frets on the side, bullets on the front. Black arms that give way to tortoise, and tortoise on the interior. These glasses are so ME, and I’m glad that the staff gets me well enough to put the right frames in my hands.
Since I’ve been using Fred Slater & Associates, my workplace opened up an optometry center with a great selection of frames a short walk away from my office. I’m sure they are great, but I value convenience much less than being known when it comes to my health & style.

My husband and I went to see Dr. Amy Chi-​Fernandez today and had a fantastic experience. We were long overdue for an eye exam and had heard about her through mutual friends. She was super friendly and answered all our questions and concerns. I am currently 5 ½ months pregnant and was concerned if my vision would be affected. She assured me that if my exam reflected a stronger perscription during my pregnancy and later after giving birth, it changed, that she would re-​examine me again. I would highly recommend anyone in the SouthBay to check them out. They are located right next to Camera 7 in the Pruneyard, I’m glad I asked beforehand or else I would’ve walked around in circles before finding them.

I have been patronizing this business for the last seven years. Unfortunately, I have had three very negative experiences. The first occurred when I sent my children in to have an optometry appointment with Dr. Slater. He made a number of racially charged comments that made my children feel very uncomfortable. The next occurrence was when I was going to get new glasses. One of the staffers named Mark, was incredibly rude for no reason. After I sat down for an eyeglass fitting he asked me to then again to change seats because he was unwilling to slide his chair on his side of the desk (btw this was maybe a 6in adjustment to his left). Then he responded to my questions quite condescendingly and failed to recognize that I was trying to make an informed purchase. In addition to this Mark kept trying to force added services on to my order and proceed to argue with me when I told him I was not interested. On my next visit an older blonde/​grey woman again was quite rude. Throughout the setting she made constant negative snarky comments about name and other aspects of my personal information, was visibly disgusted that I chose to stand in the large mirror rather than sit to view the new frames and finally because I asked her to re-​write a prescription where she used I’ll formed lettering on the prescription. Finally after she rewrote the prescription she proceeded to tell me the correction was for my benefit only because in the industry they knew how to decipher the typo. I reminded her that I was the paying customer and taking the prescription outside of this office would cause confusion for other retailers.
These experiences were quite disappointing because it was clear to me that after all these years they really didn’t care to service me equally to other customers that I’ve seen in their place of business. I won’t be making this 30 mile drive any longer.

Had my eyeballs checked out again by Dr Slater! Was able to get my daughter and 9 year old seen too! He was extremely informative and thorough! I couldn’t be happier with our services here!
I’m loving my glasses and contact choices we made together. My son also picked out a nice pair with his new prescription! I can’t emphasize enough the patience and kindness Dr Slater gave us!

I really, really love this place! They treated me so well and they actually take the time to explain things thoroughly. I would give this office five stars over and over again.

I purchased my prescription glasses at this office about a year ago because my optometrist doesn’t sell glasses. They were super nice, professional, and have a great variety of glasses to choose from. But wait… It gets better. The other day while cleaning, my mom stepped my my glasses and broke them. So went went over there and within 20 minutes I had a new pair. Since the glasses were still under warranty I was able to get the same frame for free! Fabulous!!! I will be back!

I recommend this place! I saw Dr. Chi for my regular examination. My appointment was on time, process easy, the staff assisted me with choosing my frames. They also accepted my FSA card. Best experience and many frames to choose from.

I recently went in for an eye exam at «Fred Slaters» and had a great experience. I was in need of new contacts and had been using the same pair of daily contacts for months on end and I hadn’t had my eyes checked in two years. The front desk staff made me feel welcome as I came in for my exam, had me fill out my paperwork, and sent me right to Dr. Chi within minutes.
Dr. Chi was very personable and knowledgeable. She asked why I’d been wearing my daily contacts for so long and then offered an explanation on why I should stop doing that. The eye exam she administered was quick and painless as we moved from machine to machine eventually finishing on the dreaded «puff-​of-​air» test. After we finished the exams, she gave me recommendations on daily to monthly contacts, the different brands of contacts, and the proper way to use them.
All-​in-​all, I had a great experience at «Fred Slaters» and recommend Dr. Chi to anyone and everyone that have vision and eye care needs!

My whole family comes here and we always receive great service. I love how they cater to my young daughter. They are very patient with her and she always leaves happy. Also, I especially like how they personally help you pick glasses (my last optometrist never did this and I went to them for over 10 years).

This office and their staff go the extra mile for their patients.
I have a special needs child who requires glasses and there are some challenges in fitting her correctly.
I need to preface this review by saying I was blown away with the kind, compassionate treatment myself and my family received from several people at this office, including Dr Slater himself.
We had several visits, and tried lots of different frames.
They even ordered frames our ophthalmologist recommended, that Dr Slater’s office didn’t regularly carry.
In the end we got as close as we are going to get to a proper fit for my daughter.
They are also much less expensive than every other place we spoke with.
I cannot say enough good things about these folks!

I wanted to find an eyeglass store near my home, that carried good looking frames, and accepted my insurance plan, and I sure did. I went to Dr. Slater’s, and met April Collier, who was friendly, knowledgeable, competent, and not pushy or on an ego trip. It took some time to find the right frames for my face, however, with April’s expertise, patience, and perseverance, we did it. I was going from single vision to progressives, and I was very apprehensive. April assured me that she would make the glasses work and she did. My glasses arrived quickly, within a week. I put them on, expecting problems, but there weren’t any. After a week, April even called me to see if I was satisfied. This is my new place now to buy glasses.

I’ve been going to this office for about a decade and have seen three different doctors. For the last few years it’s been Dr. Chi, who is really great. She is personable, competent, and explains things very clearly. The office staff is very nice as well. Mark, in particular, is wonderful. He will get you in the perfect pair of glasses and explain all the coverages for your frames and lenses. He also took the time to go over my chart and talk to me on the phone recently when I was thinking of getting contacts. He explained everything I needed to know to make the decision – all the medical details, plus all the financial details.

My family has been coming here for years, really like everyone in the office. Saw Dr. Isabella Yu for the first time recently and she is awesome! Cindie at the front desk was very patient and helpful as well. I would highly recommend Dr. Yu and this office if you are looking for an optometrist.

Dr. Slater is a good guy. He is personable, real and knows proper eye care. He has an efficient staff that too is personable and knowledgeable. His assistant Mark as well as April are very efficient, knowledgeable and has always helped me for adjustments, information and education on why I should or should not purchase various types of glasses for both myself and my children and wife. We buy most all our eye-​wear needs here and have gotten our prescriptions from doctor Slater for years. I highly recommend and will return many more times. The office is clean, comfortable and they have a decent section of contemporary eye-​wear in which to choose as well!.5 Stars all the way~ !

I’ve been in to this office once before, and I was reminded today why I liked it so much the first time. Dr Slater was very nice and professional– he was also super friendly and helpful. I really trusted him with my eye care. Mark helped me pick out the right glasses and sunglasses for myself and also helped me work out the best deal for me because I am on a budget. They didn’t hurry me and were completely willing to work with me. I really appreciated all their help and it was a very nice experience.

Was way overdue for an exam for contacts AND a new pair of glasses and being in the pruneyard now decided to call Slater Optometry … the super helpful receptionist asked me when I wanted to come in and I jokingly said «now» … but that ended up working out! Love it when that happens.
Less than 30 minutes later I’m screened and examined with a follow-​up scheduled for new contacts … state of the art equipment, warm and welcoming office, incredibly friendly staff, and Dr. Chi ROCKS.
While I may slightly influenced by learning my vision has actually IMPROVED a bit, this really was the best eye exam ever.
Looking forward to my next visit. (who says that about a trip to the doctor??)

Came here for a standard eye checkup since I rarely go to the eye doctor. As I walked in I was immediately greeted by a friendly desk lady who then directed me to see Dr. Chi. Dr. Chi was extremely professional and efficient; it was my first time checking my eye prescription and she took me through all the tests in a timely matter.
The rest of the staff was well trained and answered whatever questions I had for them. Definitely left the place satisfied with a little more knowledge about optometry.

Dr. Chi will help you SEE… She saved the day and my poor eyes! I came to see her because i had an eye infection and through a quick examination, she was able to dertermine the cause and offer me a prescription for eye drops. Boy am i thankful i saw her because within a couple of days, my eyes were back to normal.
Total professionalism and very knowledgable. I have full trust in Dr. Chi! Keep up the great service and I will be referring more business to you! =)
