History

Established in 1979.

A handyman friend was introduced to floor refinishing, and he needed a helper. This was another opportunity to learn something new, so I signed on with him. Three months later, he sold the new business to me, and I was off and running!

There was a lot to learn, and not a lot of useful literature on how to do it. Ten years later, I wrote a small booklet on floor refinishing for homeowners, filling in the details for everyone who rents a floor sander, and then tries to figure out what to do next. It got favorable reviews in a trade publication, and the book found its way into around 250 libraries in the U.S.

In my late twenties, I was working as a machine operator. I’d been there for 5 years, and I made union-​scale wages. At the same time, I felt that I needed to have more freedom to pursue my musical career.

So I gave up the job, moved into modest housing, and begin to do temp work in the industrial sector. I drove forklifts, worked in a steel mill, and sanded electronic circuit boards. It was great fun, for me, doing all these different kinds of work. In the meantime, I kept my eye open for something that I would want to do on my own.

With my friend’s new flooring business, we ended up learning on the job. But I found that I loved the work, and I went on to become a licensed contractor on my own.

That was 32 years ago. We’ve turned out a lot of good floor jobs since then, and I still enjoy playing music on the weekends.
