I wish I could not even give this one star.
I wouldn’t reccommend anyone to Dr. Irwin. His manners and views on dentistry seem to be stuck in the 80s. He spent the entire appointment spouting off fairly off-​color remarks about Russian dentists and how young, vain girls will only get composite fillings even though it’s better to get silver ones that won’t erode over time (I am a 20’s female with composite fillings, and no desire for silver ones, what is the point of this statement to me besides to make me feel denegrated??)
He took about a 1 minute look inside my mouth and told me everything was fine and that I should come back again in 6 months. I have a cavity that is visible to my naked eye and that was the whole reason for coming in. He dismissed this as not true. I also told him that I have tooth sensitivity and he dismissed this as nothing as well and told me to drink more tap water.
I left this appointment feeling as though he didn’t care at all about what I was saying and had written me off before I even sat down. I immediately changed dentists after this. I wouldn’t go back to him if my insurance company paid ME, not him.
Oh, and all this rudeness and dismissal cost me $ 10. Never again.

I went to Dr. Irwin for many years… then one event, his extracting a molar and leaving a shard in my gum, changed everything. I won’t go into the details, but the pain, time and thousands of dollars to correct the consequent infection, fistula and loss of another molar put me off Dr. Irwin for good. At no point did he agree that there was a serious problem; he «took my word for it,» even when x-​ray evidence, oral surgery and a costly implant were needed to correct my problems. After so many years with Dr. Irwin, I had to rely on the expertise of others to make me right again.

I LIKE Dr. Irwin. I mean, really LIKE him. I’ve never been to a dentist about whom I could genuinely say that. He was recommended to me by someone else whom I really like, so perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised. In any event, though — in addition to being extremely personable, he also possesses a thorough knowledge of the ins and outs of dental coverage and is up front and to the point about what is covered and what is not, and he’s very honest about what is necessary and what is not. He’s not the sort who will try to get reimbursed for as much as he possibly can. Also — Although he’s been in the business for 20-​odd years, he attends the dental association convention every year to keep up with the latest. After trying several different dentists, I’m very confident I’ve found «the one»! :)

Dr. Jack irwin is the best dentist I ever had, and considering the shape my teeth were in and the help I needed I was fortunate to find him. His work is always great, and he explains the procedures and the billing in a manner that puts me at ease. It helps that I have great insurance, so the money is never much of an issue, but it still is good to know that he is making sure the insurance issues and bills are taken care of. He is great to speak with, and I don’t dread at all going to his office. Check Music Matters for a great selection of cd’s across the street after your visit.

I am terrified of dentists. It’s not them… it’s me. Going to the dentist is my biggest fear. I take that back… finding a NEW dentist in New York City and then going to the dentist is my biggest fear. However, Dr. Irwin is amazing. I had severe pain in my lower jaw and he agreed to see me right away. He runs a two chair practice in Park Slope and has been there for 23 years. He has no receptionist, no dental hygienist… just him. He even answers the phone when you call.
When I went in to see him, he made it extremely difficult to be scared. He was funny, relaxed, and disarming. I felt like I was talking to a family friend and not a scary dentist. The level of care was impeccable and I found myself laughing at the end. He was extremely clear about what my insurance covered and what it didn’t and even made sure I wasn’t paying extra.
Turns out my jaw pain was out of grinding my teeth all the time. But I booked a regular cleaning and check up before I left and for the first time in my life… I’m not afraid to go to the dentist.
