I really enjoyed the food here… I got the beef stew and it was perfect… I ordered a cake as well… It a bit different kind of cake but it reminds me of home on how a hometown bakery where i grew up used to do their cakes…

Had dinner here yesterday; a Saturday night. It looked moderately busy and was my 1st time for Caribbean food. I must be biased to stronger flavor. I had one of their specialties, roasted chicken and the rice w/black beans(I was told they only cook that rice on the weekend). The person eating with me ordered their salmon dish which was served w/tomato and onion and its juices. So, both of us said the food is ok but very mildly seasoned and(I don’t know if this is how it is supposed to be) my rice was extremely dry; so much so that some rice kernels were crunchy. Unless someone enlightens me as to a restaurant were Caribbean food is different from this, I will conclude that just maybe it’s just not for me :(

I use to go this place when it was on the corner of 7th ave, the food was much better in the old location, the rotisserie chicken just isn’t the same, the grilled king fish isn’t either. This restaurant use to be packed all times of day and night, but now it’s always empty. It’s a shame that a change in address changed the food so drastically even the house salad dressing and avocado salad wasn’t as good. I miss the old Gran Castillo.

Huge portions at reasonable prices!!! Service needs to be better both for take out and dine in. Last time I ordered take out and had to wait an extremely long time for a side order of tostones. Food was flavorful unlike tonight’s dine in experience. There was a bit of a wait time before the waitress came over to take the food order. I ordered the boneless chicken chunks with yellow rice, red beans and a side of tostones. The boneless chicken chunks resembled oddly shaped chicken nuggets and had no flavor as well as the yellow rice. The tostones needed salt. The red beans were ok. I’ve had food at this restaurant countless times before the move a few doors down and am quite disappointed with the food now being served. Not sure if I will return.

Great Cuban sandwiches at this Puerto Rican joint. Yellow rice and beans and«bistec» are great albeit a bit greasy but you shouldn’t walk in here expecting anything else. It’s the perfect amount of comfort food.

Being from South Florida, I have been on the hunt for authentic Latin food in NYC. I was in Park Slope recently and really craving a Cuban meal after visiting the Carribean Impressionism exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum haha :) This place was such a welcome find! It’s actually Dominican, but all the staples were there. I ordered my go-to, the Pollo Empanizado with moros & maduros(mixed black beans & rice and sweet plantains). The portions were huge(plenty for leftovers) and extremely satisfying. Service was great and the place is clean and simple. Next time I am in the area, I will gladly come again!

I can’t believe that I haven’t reviewed this place yet! It’s one of our staple restaurants. The interior is nothing fancy and very much in need of an upgrade, but the good food and prices have us going back. We usually order the beef stew with the yellow rice and beans. We also like the rice with pigeon peas. The beef stew has big chunks of tender beef with potato and carrot chunks. The sweet carrot pieces are my favorite parts of the stew. The people who go there are old regulars. The staff knows them and greets them like family, so if you’re new, you may wait a bit as the staff tends to talk with the regulars for a while.

I’ve been coming here for over 20 years. From breakfast to late night snacks, they have never disappointed me. There is something so comforting about aging with a place and people. We all now are a bit grayer, but the love affair continues as strong as day one. I can’t say enough about the staff. As many know, this place was forced to move almost two years ago. While the old spot will always be in my heart(especially the whole communal seating situation), I welcome the new and improved facilities. The fact the the diner folded just in time to keep this place in the nabe, is certainly a most serendipitous sign that we were meant to be. My go-to dish: Pernil, rice, beans, maduros and a side of avocado. That said, I think I’ve tried everything this place has to offer over the years.

When you don’t feel like making the chicken to go with your sides just come here and get the half chicken for $ 4.50… yup… $ 4.50. I am so guilty of doing this at least 3 times a month, b/c I can not get my life together enough to get home season and bake a chicken. Or the other alternative of getting rice and beans, maduros, and avocado salad for the days my whole life is just over. The price is right and you could feed a mini village.

It was fine. They didn’t have the chicken soupy rice, which was beyond disappointing, considering it’s a staple on the menu. I got the mofongo – the price was right($ 6.25) and it was a solid dish. I thought it was a little bland and could’ve used more broth, but the hot sauce I put on it helped. My biggest gripe, though, was the service. It was slow, and attempting to get a refill of my water was nearly impossible. I shouldn’t have to jump around and act like one of those whacky inflatable things at a car dealership to get some more water. Being on her cell phone instead of paying attention to customers wasn’t helping, either. I’ll still consider coming back, but who knows if they can make it past«mediocre.»

We stopped in here looking for a good but not expensive place to get some meat. Found this place and we were very happy! The service was great, as was most of the food. Don’t order the salad, it’s iceberg lettuce, a couple of tomato slices and a cucumber slice. It’s not worth it, and that’s not why you come here. We had pernil and fried pork chunks, along with maduros. Delicious. My husband ordered a papaya shake, I had a diet snapple. Total bill was about 26 and we had to take half the food with us. The place looks like a diner, is very clean, and the bathrooms were nice. If you’re in the neighborhood and you are looking for something that’s not vegan, gluten-free or pretentious, this is the place.

Huge portions for affordable dishes is what you would find here at El Gran Castillo de Jagua. The décor is super simple with tons of seating. You basically get what you pay here. My bf and I ordered a mofongo with peril and beef stew with yellow rice and red beans. The monfongo is worth trying. The gravy that came with it is the same as my beef stew. The beef stew contained many of pieces of beef(~5) and carrots. The yellow rice is well cooked and the red beans were alright. All in all, this is a good spot that won’t put a dent in your wallet while filling your tummy up!

My allergist office is located in the neighborhood. So I decided to get food for take out. I ordered baked chicken with white rice & red beans with a side of yucca & a avocado salad. I was so disappointed when I arrived home. the waitress gave me hard yellow rice instead of white rice looked & tasted days old. the baked chicken had no flavor no color at all & the beans watered down(where’s the beans!) only sauce. the yucca & avocado salad were the only two things that was fresh & edible!!! I should have looked at my order before walking out the restaurant looks like they were trying to get rid of old food! No worries though I learned my lesson never will I order from this restaurant again! like the old saying goes you get what you pay for!

Ridiculous portions for $ 9 is the calling card here at El Gran Castillo de Jagua, which I believe translates to the Grand Castle of Jagua. Yes, the restaurant looks like a prime candidate for Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Makeover show. And yes the prices for a meal seem too good to be true: $ 8.95 for a half chicken with 2 sides? Yes, yes that is a reality here at the Grand Castle. It’s not great chicken(white meat was a bit dry), but the tostones are possible with authenthic garlic sauce and the salad is fresh. Pio pio, this is not. But for this area of Brooklyn, this is the best value you will get and no man or woman will ever leave hungry.

One of the few places I had a meal at on my recent trip to NYC that I would call reasonably priced. My wife and I had two main courses at less than $ 9 each, both large portions. Mine was sausage & rice and hers was a very large pork chop, of which she gave me a small sample to taste, and I thought both tasted very good. I almost never give a 5-star rating to a place I’ve only visited once. But the combination of price, portion size, and taste calls out for the highest rating I can give this restaurant.

I’ve been coming to this place for years and they never disappoint me. Dine in and take out experience is always descent. Good portions of food… Love the space in the new location but prefer the old spot, it had a Brooklyn feel with the bar stools in the front… The food is yummy and tastes authentic… Cons: Service is sometimes very slow… Waitress speaks to you like you’re suppose to know what Mofongo consists of and may have an attitude when you need clarity.

I absolutely love this place… I’ve been coming to this restaurant since I was a little girl, my mother has been since she was a young lady… The food here always does the trick… I know everyone, and all the waitress are so nice. They relocated a few doors down to where they originally were… But at least the food and the atmosphere stayed the same!
