Cog & Pearl

Cog & Pearl is another adorable shop along 5^th Ave selling unique handmade goods. Favorites included the chalkboard skulls, the photo collages hanging on the back wall and basically all of their ‘Brooklyn’ stuff. They also have plenty of paper goods and jewelry. This store has a little bit of everything, no doubt you’ll find something unique for you or whichever friend/​family member you might be shopping for.

Cog & Pearl is my go-​to for every kind of gift. I’ve lost count of how many fun, interesting housewarming gifts I’ve gotten here! It’s a nice feeling to know that no matter what you buy here, you won’t have that awkward moment where you find the same thing already on a friend’s mantle, kitchen countertop, or library.
The selection is always interesting, and every time I go in there I find something new. So far I have resisted buying one of everything for myself, but I’m not sure how much longer that will last. The staff is always friendly and accommodating, to boot. Buying something delicate? Count on them to wrap it up nicely. Buying a birthday card to go with that gift? They take the price tag off without you needing to ask.
The only downside? It’s not open on Mondays. That would usually be fine, except for the occasional «surprise! it’s a national holiday and therefore even though it’s Monday I’m having a party and you’re invited last minute». Well, stinks for you, last-​minute planner, that means you aren’t getting a Cog & Pearl present from moi.

This is such a cool shop, perfect for finding small goods made by independent designers. If you’re tired of supporting «the man» or other mass-​produced shops, come by here! They sell books, bags, jewelry, wallets, and just fun décor items.
Great addition to the Park Slope shopping scene, definitely worth taking a look if you’re in the area.

LOVE. Looooooove this place. Very small boutique craft and gift shop, with a lot of local, artisanal items. It’s chock full of all those little things you never knew you needed, but must absolutely have. I like places like that. Sort of like when I used to peruse the offerings at Sharper Image as a kid, or like the items in the SkyMall catalog, but waaaaayyyyy better.
They have very unique and ironic stuff, comical stuff, beautiful stuff, and wall-​mounted jackalope taxidermy. Oops, scratch that, I just bought the last one! Suckers!
Check this place out, it’s a real gem and one of a kind.

I kind of want to buy everything in this shop, and that is a good thing… for them. Very dangerous for me.
I go there to buy gifts, and then I come away with not only that, but a little something for myself.
I think the jewelry designers who create the pieces are local, and I really like that they don’t all look the same, they’re pretty unique.
And the home items are all pretty interesting as well. Also fantastic gifts.

If you are into unique, artistic housewares, clothing, jewelry, etc. I dare you to go to this store and not want to buy at least 2 things for yourself for every 1 thing you spot for the person you are actually gift shopping for. If you can do so, you are a less covetous soul than I. You’ve got to love the fact that so many of the things they sell seem to be made by local artists, hence havign originality and soul.

Funky, cool, Brooklyn chic odds and ends store on «the other 5^th Avenue» (how Park Slope’s shoppy 5^th ave is touted) where you can find a «wish box» or a «make your own terrarium kit» or a gold scissor charm or a Brooklyn Bridge art mirror to hang in your charming outer borough abode.
I really enjoy looking around this store and there’s always stuff that I want to buy (but usually logic my way out of). I did buy my friend an expensive metal wish box filled with glitter and I was excited about that since buying t for myself would be slightly frivolous.
Really cool place to peruse though and a definite hit on «the other 5^th Avenue» shop walk.

Here you will find many unusual knick-​knacks for your home that look like they were pulled from an Edward Gorey garage sale dollar bin (sometimes in a good way, sometimes not). Don’t be fooled, these things are not dollar-​priced. They are very, very expensive.

I love this store! It reminds me of a store in LA called Handmade but classier. I buy all my gifts here as they have an authentic handmade flair to them. I believe most if not all the jewelry, bags and other items are all handmade in brooklyn.

Maybe I’m just sort of stuck up. or maybe it’s that I live across the street and have access to this place at all times — but frankly I’m a bit underwhelmed.
I admit, the jewelry section is fantastic, but the bags, «housewares» and kitchy type items are generally lackluster. It also would do them good to have more wearables.
I prefer to wait for holiday craft fairs, or Renegade, than to pay three times the price for things in this shop.

I bought a wallet here before, which I love. As presents today, I bought a necklace, ear rings, and some pins. Although some things can be more expensive, you could definitely find adorable accessories within your budget if you look around.
The shop keepers are very friendly and helpful. Personally, it is a destination store for me, even though it’s located all the way in Brooklyn and I live in Astoria.

I ran into the owner of the (former) Nest on 7^th Avenue and 12^th St. After lamenting his relatively recent closing (it’s now the location of another Bird store), he directed me to Cog & Pearl.
Of course, having lived on the Slope for more than a year, I was quite familiar with C&P, and although they have a few things that I’ve desired (and ultimately received), I’m generally underwhelmed.
Notwithstanding, I have gotten earrings here, a wallet for my boyfriend, and generally like to look at the assortment of items. Still, I wish there was just a little something more.

Not only is this a great place to find a unique present (for yourself or for someone else), it’s also a good place to shop to support the handmade movement. And if you’re crafty yourself, Cog & Pearl is also quite an inspiration for DIY project ideas… especially because buying this stuff can be pricy, so making something similar is a great alternative.
From books on crafts to wall art, from clothing to odd sculptures, Cog & Pearl has it all. It reminds me a lot of Youngblood in Atlanta, so I’m happy to have found a similar place here in Brooklyn. If you want creative or unique, check out this store. Your friends will compliment you on your awesome taste.

Although, lately… I found their stuff to be… ehhh. Also, their stuff is waaaaay overpriced. Like. A fucking used purse with a dinosaur on it? Should NOT be $ 80. I still love it though. And it’s a good place to get/​receive a gift because it is almost out of my budget.
If you’re a secret admirer and want to buy me a gift: I’ve been pining over those golden branch earrings for quite some time. And no one has gotten them for me, despite my frankness.

Artsy, craftsy, and the best place to get my holiday shopping done and out of the way.
From recycled LPs turned into bowls to watches with re-​used leather from handbags, this place has everything I’ve ever wanted to be in my living room. You can honestly spend a day in this place and never get bored.
They have these little tchotchkes all through the store, and you know, you never really realized that you need a yoga flipbook until you see it.
Along with the geniuses at Etsy, this would be my pick to go handmade. For being a shop that just sells stuff, they really do excel. Because for realsies, I want all of it.

It’s such an eclectic mix of things, hard to sum up, but all really unique and awesome.
I pretty much just walk around this place picking things up and exclaiming to whoever I came with «Oh. my. god. I want this!»
Oh, and they also play good music for your happy browsing experience too. Earlier today I went for a little perusal after work, and they were listening to the Kinks. I oohed and aahed over some spectacular flip-​books, bought a very surreal birthday card for a friend, and left with a big ol’ smile :)

One of the coolest shops on Fifth Avenue, without a doubt.
I love places like this, where it’s basically just an assortment of the things that a few interesting people think are cool. Someone buying for this place has amazing taste, and the people running the counter are completely chill and friendly.
Every time I walk in I find something new and interesting, and my girlfriend could spend hours looking around (which is saying something, considering the wee size of the place.)
Absolutely worth checking out!

I am giving 4 stars but am tempted to give less. I agree with all the positive comments people have made. When C&P first opened I thought to myself «Those poor people are going to get a rock through their window» The stuff they were selling seemed a bit snooty to me. However soon I went in and really examined the goods-​I started drinking the C&P kool-​aid-​there is/​was a sale cabinet where I scored all sorts of stuff. I had a pair of earring I got for myself here that were my favorite until they one was lost in a grocery store in VT/​*sad face*
So my only take of woe is this: i bought a necklace here and the chain broke-​I brought it in they were more than happy to see about a replacement. A replacement was ordered and quite a bit of time went by. I know this stuff doesn’t happen overnight-​they finally called and I went to get the new chain (and the two trinket things that were on the necklace) Well… the chain was new but one of the trinkets-​a blue stone was missing. The owners (a husband and wife I believed) were both there and were like Um… oh shit. Long story short-​I basically got a new necklace with a new stone –white and when I went to get it (again after a looooong time elapsed) they were like and you don’t have to pay. Gee, thanks guys YOU are the ones who lost the piece.
I have been in since but it has never quite been the same. I would say that an event like this seems an anomaly for C&P-they seem to take an immense amount of care in the items they select, and their display.
I have my eye on one of the purses made from vintage car fabric.
