Hustead’s is a fixture in the Downtown Berkeley landscape. As a family-​owned small business for sixty years, we are proud of our status in the community, and invite you to learn more!

The familiar red and white Art Deco building on Durant near Shattuck has been a fixture in the Berkeley downtown landscape. Originally built as a Lincoln-​Mercury dealership in the 1940s, the building has gone through several transformations over the decades.

After the building became a towing and auto body repair facility in the 1960s, Hustead’s operated smoothly under a different set of family owners over the decades.

In 1989 Hustead’s was one of the only building in Berkeley to suffer major damage during the Loma Prieta Earthquake. In fact, the building burned to the ground and was completely rebuilt in the Art Deco style of the original

These guys are out and out Heroes. My 2001 BMW’s locking mechanism broke, I have no key fob and was in the worst way. I had Rex Locksmith come see if he could get it open (great people, highly recommended!) however after two hours he had to call it quits. BMW Weatheford said they couldn’t help. AAA sent out a tow truck that could not fit into my garage, they had to call it quits. I did my research and found that Hustead’s has an older F350 that might fit under the low clearance. They came within hours, only to find out there truck wouldn’t clear. This is where they are different, rather than telling me tough luck like all the others, they put my car on dollies and pushed the thing to the truck! Amazing. I cannot thank Gail and Chan enough. I literally would not have a car or my sanity without this company. I will be paying it forward!

Can you believe that they want to charge property owners for the sign that they display on their property?! The sign that brings them business! Let alone that their rates like all towing companies are ridiculous… When are we going to start regulating towing and «storage» fees?

Jermaine saved the day! I didn’t have towing needs, but I was trying to get into my friend’s apt when the key got jammed in a sticky lock. Jermaine didn’t have any WD-​40 on him but he was willing to run back to his shop to get some. The WD-​40 resolved our problem. He went above and beyond to help us out when he didn’t need to do and had nothing to gain from it (except Karma points). Thanks Jermaine.

The guy named jeramie (big black guy) overcharged me. It was supposed to be $ 80 and he charged me $ 160 and he refused to take my credit card. Later on, I called to his office and let one of the manager know about his cheating and then they send him back to my place to send that extra $ 80 back. What an unprofessional jerk! He was trying to put that extra $ 80 on his pocket.

If I had to choose a towing company, it’d be Hustead’s. Okay, I’ve never had Hustead’s tow my own car before but I have called them up to tow about a dozen other cars that belonged to other people. All the inconsiderate jerks that block our driveway or illegally park in our spaces will get the same professional tow job from Hustead’s.
A car was once parked in a steep garage behind a column in a tight corner space. I was impressed with how Ken from Hustead’s used every tool in his truck (dollies, winches, straps, etc.) to meticulously extract the car from our garage inch by inch.
For low clearance garages (~6′) Hustead’s has a classic Ford F-​350 from the 90s. I know of no other tow truck company in the East Bay that has a similar truck able to fit into our low clearance garages/​buildings.
Having someone’s car towed away is never an easy decision but at least I know it’s in the hands of a professional and courteous operator. If I ever turned into a jerk and blocked someone’s driveway I’d trust Hustead’s to tow my own car!

Our van broke down in Emeryville at the Ikea Parking Lot. It was getting dark so we decided to call this tow truck service. Dan, was the name of the person who helped us. He was so knowledgeable of all the different things that could have gone wrong with the van. Eventually we didn’t even need the service because he helped us fix it. We therefore didn’t end up paying the whole price they usually charge for a tow. He also made sure we got safely onto the main road, just in the case the van broke down again. He was also kind enough to call later to make sure we got home safe. That was the best customer service you could ever ask for!

Made an appointment last week to get my car into the mechanic and wouldn’t you know the day I’m suppose to take it in the battery dies on me.
Searched Unilocaled and found Hustead’s and gave them a call. They were at my place within 10 minutes and jumped my car without any problems.
Another added bonus to the quick speed and professionalism was that they directly billed my local State Farm agent so now I don’t have to go through the whole insurance reimbursement hassle.
Hustead’s will make you smile even though your day started off like sh**.

Last Saturday I got rear-​ended on Ashby by a young woman on a cell phone. My car did not do well nor did I and I had to go to the hospital. Fast forward 8 hours and it’s 2:30a and AAA is telling me I have to be at my car to get it towed. They sent Husteads Auto & Tow out and that was the best thing to happen on this otherwise crappy day. My tow driver, Will, reached out right away via cell phone and told me exactly where he was and how long he’d be. He showed up on time and explained the whole process of how they’d get my busted car up onto the flatbed without doing more damage. More importantly, Will was genuinely concerned with my well-​being and his great attitude really made the end of an otherwise terrible day much better. Kudos to Husteads for hiring such phenomenal drivers and great customer service reps. I hope I don’t need another tow anytime soon, but if I do, I’m calling Husteads directly!

I live near the UC Berkeley campus and left my rental car headlights on out in Oakland around 9:30pm. Coming back from the party I attended, I found my battery dead around midnight. I got a ride home from a friend and then called Hustead’s around 3:00am to ask about getting a jump-​start. Although they don’t normally do this, they picked me up at my apartment and gave me a ride to my car. Will was the driver and he kept up excellent conversation all the way, almost making my calling a tow company a treat. Not bad, especially from 3:00am-4:00am. I can’t recommend these guys enough. In fact, I’m not all that upset that I’ve put off getting my AAA membership so far.

On the way to pick up the cat at the vet after emergency treatment, drove a block… flat tire. Turned around to a wonderful sight… a tow truck heading my way. Waved to the driver, Gale… on the way to another call but he stopped anyway, he called it into AAA, got it approved, and had it changed in minutes. Naturally the last car driver (name & sex not required) left the car with no gas… Gale followed me to within blocks of a gas station then went his way to the original call. Really Really kind… I didn’t even have time to cry. TX so much!
