Description

Specialties

We are craftsman frame makers, with an eye for detail in design. We custom frame using all conservation techniques and are highly regarded as the design specialists of the Bay Area. We use a wide variety of preservation, museum, and acrylic glazing, as well as thousands of acid free mats and even more moulding options. We frame diplomas, photos, jerseys, posters, etchings, watercolors, mirrors, and more. We build shadow boxes for three-dimensional art, as well as oversize frames for larger pieces. We also stretch canvas, needlepoint and other fabric objects, done by hands with decades of experience.

Aside from our framing expertise, we also specialize in bringing life back to old, decaying or otherwise damaged works of art. We can meticulously re-craft heirloom frames, with our breadth of expertise with delicate wood, metal and other material refurbishment and refinishing. We have touched up old canvases on request, we have renewed centuries-old frames with careful conservation techniques with a craftsman’s eye to bring out the right lustre, sheen or patina. Every piece of restoration is always unique and individual, and brings out the best marriage of our experience and design imagination, and we take our time in service to the needs of each masterwork. If you have a special work of art that you would like to restore, we would love to hear from you.

History

Established in 2008.

In 1979, Rodolfo started his framing career working with an artist in Los Angeles, matting and framing watercolors and prints. By 1983 he had opened his own gallery on Pier 39 and was matting over 800 pieces of art a month. This allowed Rodolfo to experiment with color and texture, taught him symmetry, proportion and balance, and allowed him to polish his craft.

In 2000, having mastered large format matting and framing — a skill that sets him apart from most framers — Rodolfo began consulting and making house calls. Seeing a client’s house enabled him to tailor the framing and matting of a piece to a client’s décor.

Rodolfo opened Artistic Picture Framing in downtown Berkeley in 2008, a time when many businesses in the area were closing. Because of his skill, high quality product and reasonable prices, Artistic Picture Framing has continued to grow strong. With 14 framing stores in Berkeley, Rodolfo knows that good customer service is what makes him stand apart.
